[ The twitch of her lips at his very bad pun quickly becomes a frown before he's done speaking. ]

Are you kidding? I'll be out of this shit hole the first chance I get.

But while stuck I'm here anyway . . . [ She makes a vague hand gesture, as if launching a musical career was a hobby to pass the time. ]

As would I, given the choice. I have responsibilities at home, after all. But in lieu of not being able to depart at will, there's no reason not to do what we can here.

[ For Persephone, that was a music career... for Kid, becoming part of a team. ]

What I meant was, at least you're moving forward while being here. It's not something I can say of everyone.

[ He means it kindly, she knows he does, but her brow still creases. She doesn't want to feel like she's adjusting to being stuck here. It's just a placeholder- a distraction from the real work awaiting her back home. But still, she had to sing- the idea of not performing was unbearable. So she started building an audience in the scene she'd known best. But, was that really any different from settling?

She takes a slow drink before she replies tersely: ]

I just need to sing.

[ It was her phrasing that caught his attention most: as someone who frequently used the term need in a way that wasn't simply an idle term but an actual impetus, he knew it when he heard it. ]

Why?

[ The single word isn't a challenge for her to defend the claim, but a desire to know an understanding of it. ]

[ She has a hard time explaining it to herself. She looks back down at her drink again, thinking of how to answer. ]

What do gods exist for, where you're from?

[ Ohh... that was a question far better suited to his Father than to him, at least in Kid's mind. It's not that he's never thought about it, simply that it's always seemed to him like he's trying to put together a puzzle with only half the pieces.

But he gives it due consideration, because it's an important question to him, and it must also be to Persephone, to ask it. That's not the kind of thing you bring up for small talk, and so his answer is slow in finding its wording. ]

To hold the responsibilities that should not or cannot be asked of humans.

[ And by 'humans' he was being fairly broad in that term, but 'mortals' didn't quite fit and 'people' wasn't any more specific, if anything it was more vague. ]

By doing that, we keep order.

Something you can't ask of humans . . .

[ She watches him struggle with his answer. Whatever she thinks of it (and she does think a good few things) she keeps to herself, just giving him a simple nod. ]

We don't keep order. We inspire. What people do with that is up to them. But it's what I do.

[ There's a little indraw of breath at her answer, and then Kid smiles at her. ]

That sounds like a very wonderful responsibility.

Yeah . . . it's not bad. But I can't do it, here. Not for my humanity, anyway.

[ He nods, understanding that feeling very well. As someone who's been an imPort for two years now, he'd be a lot more frantic about it if he didn't know his father was still taking care of things. ]

Nor can I. But at the end of the day, humans are humans, so there's no reason not to do the same here as at home.

Yeah. . . yeah.

[Oh there were all kinds of reasons. just none sfhe cared about. on some level, she would sing because she couldnt think of anything else to do. She nudges around the mozzarella sticks, but does not pick it back up. ]
