Could you beam me up
WHO: Kaidan and Shepard ™
WHERE: A laser tag arena in Heropa
WHEN: Tuesday evening (9/27)
WHAT: Nerds on a nerd date
WARNINGS: Sugar contents are high
[ After all the madness that had gone on over the weekend, Kaidan was sure they were both feeling rusty.
Put two marines, who were used to being in the middle of a war, into a relatively mundane place -- events notwithstanding -- and they definitely seemed to let things go, at least a little bit. Then again... could anyone blame them, after dealing with the distinct possibility of death for as long as they had? ]
Ready, Commander?
[ It's mostly joking, at this point -- with a hip check to boot -- but they look ridiculous in their gear -- mostly designed to be easy to hit, but... well, this was how two grown marines could at least have some fun and feel productive. Which was the point, really. ]
I'm pretty sure I paid them enough so it's ten to two... [ A grin. ] Wanna call bets for how long they'll last?

Ready as I'll ever be, Major. [ He'd had half a thought to bringing Mako around but ... well, that idea had been firmly quashed. ]
As for how long we're gonna last, it depends. Are we dealing with people or VIs? [ He'd seen options for both coming in, but he'd honestly been happy to leave it up to Kaidan to arrange the specifics. ]

Look, just because Elcor with lasers on their backs was a good idea didn't mean corgi were as well. He laughed, and hefted the laser gun in his hands -- it was too light, and the laser armor too large -- made for someone with a lot more stomach and a lot less shoulder than what Kaidan had, but he weathered it in good grace. ]
People, I thought it might do us better -- the VI here isn't like what we'd have back home.
[ He paused, then, and smiled, and leaned in, his tone teasing. ] I might have told the guys at the base a few stories about my boyfriend... they're interested to see you in action.

I hope they were the good stories.
[ Then again, considering what they'd lived through, it wasn't likely that Kaidan didn't have any interesting ones to share.
The siren blared, signaling the start of the match, and Shepard snapped to attention, silently motioning Kaidan to move along the opposite side of the obstacle in front of them, watching for more trouble. They'd have their work cut out for them holding off on biotics, but just because it was a game didn't mean Shepard wasn't going to take this seriously. ]

[ He laughed, almost affectionately, and followed directions smoothly -- it had always been so easy to fall back into their old patterns, routines -- Shepard took point while Kaidan followed instructions. Not that he couldn't think for himself, but...
He was good, but Shepard was phenomenal.
He came along the opposite side, his voice low when he looked both directions, looking to make first contact and caught Shepard's eye on the other side of the obstacle, once they moved forward. ]
I might have told them about the time we almost got kicked out of the casino for testing that skiffer's hacking program.
[ A beat, and he wound around another, and held his gun at the ready. ]
I also mentioned the saving the galaxy thing.

[ He flashed a grin over his shoulder, but his expression grew serious quickly, especially when he caught sight of movement in the shadows over Kaidan's shoulder, and he hoisted the laser gun up, aiming and squeezing the trigger in a smooth motion.
The scoreboard lit up, flashing as points were added to their team's tally, and the distant circle of someone else's vest flared and died -- resetting for the five seconds it would take before Shepard could shoot at them again. At the same time, a pair of their opponents tore around the corner, ready to strafe them with more laser fire while Shepard was still pointed towards the first enemy he'd taken down. ]

[ He responded, with a fond half-smile, before he held his gun to the next set, Shepard on the guy he shot, but they still had two more, and they were strafing, trying to make it so they would be able to at least get a hit in.
Which was a clever tactic -- especially since this wasn't a battlefield where people ended up dead pretty quick, Kaidan wouldn't have been alone in this -- then again... He scoffed, and shot with the laser, a mock movement of his arms to compensate for a kick that didn't exist, but he reacted accordingly, and moved just as smoothly.
He Shot both of them, smooth as he could, before he nudged Shepard with his elbow in the back, a quiet conversation he had in a touch, something they'd done through armor countless times. A silent 'be back in a minute', before he took off, around a corner, looking for someone's attempted flank, knowing it was coming soon enough.
The Commander would be fine with three. ]

The police had engaged in activities like this a time or two, and what Shepard had learned that revival was the trickiest mechanic to keep track of -- since you couldn't reliably tell how many were active again after the cooldown expired. Moving in the opposite direction from Kaidan, he paused at the edge of a block, scanning an intersection.
The flashing red in his peripheral vision alerted him to imminent attack, and he ducked and rolled out of the way as swiftly as he dared, hitting the floor in a crouch and swearing softly when he heard heavy footfalls circling closer.
Probably going to have to go for a suicide run just to break out and regroup with Kaidan, he decided. He risked peeking around the corner, trying to figure out how far Kaidan was from him. ]

Like stretching muscles they hadn't, being too wrapped up in the fact that they didn't have to, that despite their active lifestyles, they weren't the same as they'd been during the war, healthier, but also off their games.
Kaidan rounded a corner, and Shepard would catch his location from the flash of red down the line, a quick shot when he rounded a corner and caught their would be flanker, -- out quick enough for Kaidan to move on. One of his coworkers, too -- who looked surprised enough that the mild mannered import was that quick with his trigger.
He grinned at him, and moved on, coming back toward Shepard, occasionally turning back to make sure he wasn't going to get caught from behind.]
[presses ffwd]
Except instead of being on a battlefield, they're playing a game, and they aren't trying to fight for any reason other than for fun. It feels good to push himself, even if consciously not using his biotics is actually a challenge, and by the end of it he's laughing, breathless and red-faced from the exhilaration.
Of course, they win -- with some good-natured grumbling from Kaidan's workers that they'd make sure not to underestimate them, next time. After a celebratory round of drinks at the nearest bar, they break up for the night, leaving Kaidan and Shepard to walk home, arm in arm and Shepard a touch tipsier than he'd meant to be. ]
Not a bad day. [ He murmured, nudging Kaidan in the side to offer a playful grin. ] We should do it more often.

But when it was all over, he felt...good. Even after the drinks, and he grinned at him with a fondness that was hard to hide in the low evening light.
It had been fun. ] Yeah? I agree. It was...
It was really nice to get those skills working again. You haven't...lost your touch, Commander.
