we were nothing but a shadow
WHO: Mika Hyakuya & Yuichiro Hyakuya
WHERE: Heropa, Florida
WHEN: August 8th, 2016
WHAT: A reunion of Hyakuyas. One arrives and another spirits him away. A continuation of this thread.
WARNINGS: Mentions of past child death/mutilation/experimentation, mentions of blood drinking
[Mika's teeth grit together, his hand not caught by Yuu's tighten when he hears those words. "But we are involved. Cause we're here." Finally they've gone so far from home that they're free. It's what he's wanted for years now and Yuu still wants to get involved? If they're forced into a situation here, that's one thing but to actively get involve just because some machine pulled them in is reckless and ridiculous. But it's Yuu and of course he wants to get involved.
He sighs and the tension seems to flow out of him at the same time, his hand relaxing against his leg once again.] You're too nosy for your own good sometimes, Yuu-chan. If there's trouble around here, you'll be front and center even if the military tells you not to. [And of course Mika will be right there alongside him to keep him from doing anything too stupid.]
Were we ever really kids? [The question is practically whispered and mostly said to himself but Yuu is close enough to hear it.]
The only good thing about this is that I'm stronger now. Maybe strong enough to protect you. [And the other children if they're brought back to life. If he could be human and keep this strength - Mika would do it.] I guess becoming a vampire saved my life too and I got to be with you again.
[Those were the only good things about being a vampire. He doesn't admit that back when the offer was given that he refused it and tried to die instead.
Yuu probably knows exactly how he feels on the whole situation even without Mika having to say a word.
After a moment he turns to look at Yuu, then the corners of his mouth turn up a little.]
Hey, Yuu-chan. If it's 2016 now does that make you seven again? [He can't help but tease a bit. They both can remember what else happened at the end of the year 2016 rather vividly.]

I'm not the one that started some of the shenanigans here! I mean, yeah, there's been a few fights, but that was nothing serious....
[More sparring, really. But he sombers after the initial pout and whine at that question. Their childhoods, neither of them were exactly ideal.] Course we were. By definition anyway. Not that it lasted long. [Since the orphanage and everything afterwards. Taking on caring for the younger kids and all.]
You don't need to protect me. I've been fine here, Mika. These people aren't the same as back home. [The ones after the seraph experiments and all.] But....I figured. I mean, that night, with Ferid...you'd lost your arm. [And he has it now. Yuu swallows, biting his bottom lip briefly as he recalls the week here that he'd been in Mika's place. Of course neither of them wanted that. But it happened anyway. Kept Mika alive. Yuu has to be grateful for that much.
And then Mika's teasing again and of course he reacts as predicted.]
O-oi, I am not! The timing here is just different. [Yeah. There are reasons he is not looking forward to December.]
no subject
That doesn't mean anything. If there's trouble around, Yuu-chan will find it just like always.
[He says it with love... and concern. Sparring is fine since he's always wanted to be stronger it's everything else that's the problem. Mika isn't sure about those words - even before the orphanage he never really felt like a child. Not when he was trying to be a good boy so his parents wouldn't hit him or his father wouldn't drink.] By definition.
Of course I do. We're family, aren't we? And family is supposed to protect each other. Even if we are somewhere far away from that place. ["Home". Mika can't use that word about their world because it isn't home to him. What is right next to him is home in the form of Yuu. So home is wherever Yuu is and Yuu is here now.] Yeah, if it wasn't for Krul I would have died.
[The physical pain of that day had been terrible but the emotional one was worse. He pushed through the agony of having a hole in his chest and an arm severed to push Yuu away so he could escape. And he'd do it again if necessary.
Teasing the other boy was always fun. Even now when he has less to smile for. Still Yuu's reaction does get a tiny smile out of him.]
I wonder if we'd find ourselves if we went to Japan. [When December comes they can quietly celebrate Yuu's birthday and then stay the hell inside when Christmas rolls around.]
no subject
[Still. It isn't inaccurate a thing to say either. And Yuu knows it, catches to that concern layered underneath the affection when Mika says it. But he has managed thus far here on his own without anything too major. And got through everything back home, even if it's been at a cost, giving up more of his humanity in the process.]
But -- ah, I guess. I think we should be okay here though. I'm not rusty or anything, still sparring but. So far the war hasn't reached the point where I've been involved. [Home. Yeah. Yuu himself isn't sure that's really a place anymore. The closest at Japan might be the JIDA headquarters. Or this room, here. If he were to think of a place. But otherwise, he feels much the same as Mika. Having his one remaining Hyakuya family member back.] I owe her then.
Well, from what I've read there's no virus there. So it's probably more like how things were before. [There'll probably be some celebrations come Christmas. But whether either or them would feel up to it is debatable.]
no subject
[They've crossed paths once in four years and Mika's spent the last few months with Yuu - he knows the other still gets in to trouble. It isn't as if he's saying it based off old memories. Even those friends of his think Yuu is a magnet for trouble. If Yuu hasn't found chaos here yet then it's only a matter of time.]
Hm? If you want, you can spar with me everyday. [Red eyes flicker over to Yuu's sword.] But not with that weapon. [Cursed gear is the choice of weapons for fighting vampires, after all. Better to avoid that kind of damage. Plus he might hate it a little for being the cause of Yuu's transformation back home. Not that it's entirely the weapon's fault.
Mika owes her too. Which might be partly why he wants to rescue her.]
Not yet. We didn't know that a virus was going to kill so many adults until it happened. [They might avoid group celebrations but they can still find their own way to celebrate it.
He tugs on Yuu's arm with the hands they've got connected.] Do you drive a flying ice cream truck like all the cars I saw earlier?
no subject
So, after Christmas? [Then they'll presumably know for sure. If the timing works out the same. If there's some other Hyakuya Sect out there experimenting.]
Yeah! It's pretty cool! But I can't go too fast with that, cause then the kids wouldn't be able to catch up to get any.
[Still, of course that doesn't stop Yuu wanting to try his hand at another, faster vehicle.]
no subject
Yeah, after Christmas. [Four months - that should be enough time for him to find out more about the government and dig into other areas of interest.]
Can I see it?
[Okay an ice cream truck is not really that awesome but it flies and that's pretty awesome.]
no subject
[Besides. Sparring isn't serious. Just about not losing your edge. To keep from getting rusty. Which they should be able to do. Against each other is probably better when Yuu's more aware than others on what Mika is capable of as a vampire and all anyway. Though Yuu's expression wasn't all that different back then in that moment of realization either, to be fair.
After Christmas. Shinoa's birthday. Then they'd know. Maybe.]
See what? The truck? Sure.
no subject
[It's going to be weird - having to use money in order to get things they want or need. Guess Mika should get a job if he doesn't like the one provided by the government. But wooden swords should be enough. Mika wasn't Yuu's typical sparring partner - he wasn't a human adult with only the strength and speed of one. Even without the use of their unique weapons, it will still be a good spar between the two of them.
Yeah, that second event doesn't really hold a lot of interest for Mika.]
Are you supposed to work today? [Did his arrival mess Yuu up?]
no subject
[It's not something Yuu's too concerned about. They'll figure something to keep them both from getting too rusty. And it isn't as if either Yuu or Guren are human themselves, though Yuu only really started showing proof of that in Shinjuku.
It is important when it concerns family though. As with the rest of the squad's birthdays.]
Nope. Tomorrow I do. And class. Were you gonna go? I figured if nothing else it'd help to learn about this world's history. [Ferid's library was more limited, and obviously things went down differently here in comparison to things back home already.]
no subject
See, that's why it isn't important for Mika to celebrate. She isn't his family even if she is Yuu's.
Mika grimaces at the question about school.]
I'll go with you to see the truck tomorrow but I don't know about going to class. I haven't been that close to that many humans for long periods of time since Nagoya. [With Yuu's friends he could wander away whenever he wanted and a lot of time was spent outdoors. Especially during the day.]. Before I think about classes, I should sort out other situations first.
[Mainly his need for blood. He needs to find a source (besides Yuu) and get himself something stable before even consider going into a closed classroom for hours with a bunch of humans.]
no subject
[Crowds. Depending on how recently Mika had fed, that....could be a problem. One they should figure sooner rather than later if possible. If this place doesn't already provide for vampires somehow. Yuu catches that grimace and underlying meaning there.]
I'll help. If you need it. I'm sure they won't miss me for one day if I skip class. I know my way around here better than you do and all.
no subject
If this was their world it might not be so bad... there were less humans around in general. It isn't that he's desiring blood all the time but the whole situation is new. Who knows what will happen.]
Go to class, Yuu-chan. I'm just going to wander around, I'll be here when you're done and then we can go out together.
no subject
If you're sure. I guess as long as you meet me back here. You know where your place is? Might be worth checking there at least while I'm out.
no subject
I'll be here. [Ah, yeah about that. Now he reaches into his uniform where he pulls out a file that he folded. Honestly he doesn't care if Yuu looks at it so he'll open it up on his lap. Of course there are his abilities listed but it does inform him of other things.] They have me in a city called Nonah. House number seven.
[Mika frowns when he sees the job they've assigned to him. Yeah, he's not going to be taking that job.]
no subject
Oh. So you're in another city.... [But that's not so bad. They could switch as necessary. As long as there's room at both for them to stick together. Yuu leans over, peering over and skimming the information. Most of which he himself already knows, of course.]
That's your job?
no subject
A nod of his head.] It's not as if I actually need a room of my own. Especially not one in another city. [Okay so he doesn't want to be that far from Yuu for a long period of time. Can anyone really blame him?
The displeasure is evident on his face.] Apparently. I'll find a different one.
[Even if he can see the benefits of a job like this. He'd be alone in the recording area, there wouldn't be too many humans on the other side of the glass - except he might have trouble expressing certain emotions in front of strangers. Maybe he could just play a bad guy or something. If the show even had a bad guy. With the word "lullabies" in the title he doubts it.]
no subject
[Yuu doesn't see the bad part on having a back up place to stay. Not that he minds Mika sharing this with him, but it could be useful to have another option. He's sure if Mika did stay there, he'd probably go with him too. And they could at least go see who he'd be sharing with, if anyone else is there too.]
You don't have to go for it. I did cause it seemed easiest and I like driving. But you can find something else.
no subject
[Why would they possibly be out there long enough to need a room? A second place to hide out might not be terrible, though. Just in case something happened here in Heropa that they actually wanted to stay away from. But the emptiness of Yuu's house suited Mika just fine.]
It's for the best - I can't sing anyway. [Lies, he's not a terrible singer but he just doesn't want to most of the time.] Have you hit anything yet? Your pink-haired friend told me how you ran into something that wasn't even moving the first time you got behind a wheel
no subject
[Of course Yuu brightens at that. And he doesn't doubt the 'we' for a moment. Because of course he wants to make the most of this, having Mika here. Mika may have got those extra months with him back home, but for Yuu, this is his chance to catch up more and be able to relax with Mika here.
Though that happier expression sours at the reminder of the first time he tried to drive.] Damned Telephone Pole.....of course he told you. I haven't crashed or anything here! I told you, it isn't like the truck goes that fast. And there's other traffic too.
no subject
Mika pats Yuu's hand with his free one.] You shouldn't let him get to you so much. He's doing it on purpose, you know. It's the other traffic I was thinking of. There's more of it here and the cars aren't exactly like the ones we're used to.
no subject
He's just doing and saying stuff to get a reaction from me. Which is kind of how we first met, I guess. When he fought me. But I've been fine. I go slow enough that the traffic isn't an issue. Though I wouldn't mind checking out a normal car. Or a racing one!
[Considering he smacked into a power pole back home with no traffic around, this should probably be classed as a terrible idea. But that doesn't stop any of his enthusiasm, the way his face lights up akin to when he was so much younger.]
