OH BROTHER, ARE YOU GONNA LEAVE ME WASTIN' AWAY

WHO: imPorts!
WHERE: The city of Philadelphia.
WHEN: July 20th, all day.
WHAT: As imPorts are welcomed to a ceremony honouring their humble ambassadors, they find themselves attacked by a series of familiar looking creatures that create massive quakes and destruction across the hosting city! Will imPorts make things better, or take advantage of the chaos? That's up to them!
WARNINGS: Earthquakes, violence, and the death of AI monsters! Please let us know if this needs to be changed. If you have any further questions or want to plot with your fellow players, please direct them HERE.

At first glance, this ceremony doesn’t look much different from the other imPort-driven affairs despite the change in locale. Held outside the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the ImPort Ambassador Ceremony is a classy black tie affair with plenty of local and federal politicians milling around, shaking hands with Ambassadors old and new and smiling for the cameras. Hung from the building itself is a large, distinguished-looking banner, congratulating the Ambassadors and welcoming the imPorts to the fair city of Philadelphia. ImPorts may find themselves face to face with the permitted reporters and cameras, but somehow they’re only given relatively easy questions to answer: what do you think of the new Ambassador? Did you feel their campaign was successful? What do you hope for from them in the future? We’re so happy to welcome your representatives into our government!

Mostly, they seem expected to smile for the cameras, say something nice, and go away. If they don’t feel like doing that, they’re free to roam the buffet filled with dainty hors d'oeuvres and fancy stuffed delicacies, truffle and cream and -- for those 21 and up -- plenty of champagne to go around. It doesn’t pay to get too out of hand because soon enough, imPorts are guided into the chairs that line the grounds, facing the large stage that has been erected, and shushed until they’re quiet for the ceremony and the cameras. Milling around are more than TV crews, of course; they’ll also notice that the area is heavily guarded by armed police officers. They have, it seems, learned from past ceremonies not to take any chances. Indeed, the officers all seem to be on edge, poised and ready to jump in at the slightest provocation.

The speeches are, for the most part, precisely the sort of bland albeit strongly worded materials one could have expected. They express how happy they are to work with the imPort community, particularly such fine examples of it, how much they owe to imPorts as a whole, and how they hope to work together for a better, brighter future. It is said in many more words, naturally, but repetition seems to be the name of the game.

It all seems to be going as planned until suddenly, the world shifts. And then it shakes. There’s silence for a moment, beyond a few gasps, a few politicians clinging to their seats. After the shock wears off, one officer yells: “Earthquake! Everyone, away from the stage!”

The rest is chaos.

As the world begins to shake around them, phones go off one by one, native and imPort alike, blaring earthquake alerts -- not that it's needed in this mess, nor does it particularly help those trapped in the crowd. Helicopters are flown in to evacuate the politicians who will accept it, though Ambassadors, should they choose to accept this invitation, have first dibs on getting the hell out of Philadelphia.

Hearing over the chaos isn't an easy feat, but there are instructions given from police officers who have leapt in, trying to evacuate everyone as quickly and as safely as possible. It's difficult in front of and inside the museum, however, with exhibits toppling over and broken glass littering the scene.

It's obvious help is needed. For imPorts intent on damage control, there's plenty to do, both in the general vicinity and in the city at large; there are buildings that need to be secured and evacuated, people in sore need of first-aid after being hit by falling objects or trapped underneath them, and more. The city needs all the help it can get whether someone is simply a good Samaritan or has the superstrength or healing abilities to lend a hand to those in need. Emergency teams flock to the scene, brushing off the reporters still trying to get a story out of good old fashioned human tragedy, but EMTs, police officers and firefighters need help getting the job too -- this is an unprecedented earthquake, unaccounted for, and even the most dutiful among them are unprepared for such a thing.

Earthquake-torn destruction rattles in the wake of these titanic creatures. So little of Philadelphia's infrastructure had been designed to withstand quakes, and perhaps because of that, public transportation was halted, telephone lines were snapped, natural gas lines erupted in flames, and electric power had to be shut down in many areas. This would be especially devastating for hospitals! While newer buildings sustained minor damage comparatively, the glorious old masonry works crumbled completely. Windows shattered and glass shards rained onto the streets. Asphalt cracked and shuddered as the monsters walked on.

Other imPorts will, perhaps, turn their attention elsewhere: to those causing the earthquakes in the first place. Some will recognize them as being of a similar structure to the imPocreats many of them have kept in their own homes, except these are unmistakably more aggressive. Standing at 12 feet tall, they strike an imposing, distinct silhouette in the chaos of the streets. They may be humanoid in shape despite the thick muscle heavy on their frames, but their feet are long, distorted, and hoof-like, with thick horns protruding from each of their shoulders, wider even more than their armspan. Their skin is organic and a ruddy brown, but appears to be, most importantly, incredibly porous as it slowly expands and relaxes, as if breathing through their entire bodies. Metal can be seen at the place where their horns meet their skin, betraying the extremely tough alloy metal skeleton within, shielding their organs from any typical attacks.

As has been previously stated, once attacked, they will absorb any force exerted into them, and imPorts will find the earthquakes increasing every time they attack one normally, their general vicinity being hit the hardest in the wake of every punch -- they're going to have to be creative to deal with this! Unfortunately, it's difficult to avoid wanting to punch back, because these imPocreats will be targeting imPorts, and they're far from weak; whether they're kicking with their incredibly powerful hooves, goring those around them with their deadly sharp horns, or simply putting those patented swole muscles to work punching out imPorts, they're not the docile enemies imPorts may hope for.

One by one as these creatures are destroyed or otherwise disposed of, the earthquakes will cease, but who knows what damage will be wrought in the meantime? It's up to you, imPorts, to save who you can and make sure to that you get this situation under control!

[Having tried to hack them with her sword once or twice, and noticing some interesting results with magic, Fuu decides that her best option is to find someone who needs assistance. Clearly, tackling these things alone is a bad idea.

She makes her way over as best as she can when the ground is shaking--it's hard to overcome her instincts to find something to shelter beneath, especially while picking her way over broken glass and chunks of cement--and waves to get Your attention, clad in her heroic gear.]

Excuse me! I think we should pair up.

B: ouch

[The procreats are huge. There's no getting around that. Fuu has been making liberal use of her wind magic, taking note of the effects air currents have on these creatures, but it's an exhausting effort, particularly when trying keep one's balance in an earthquake.

So it's not a surprise, in hindsight, that while Fuu is casting a shield, one of the imPocreats punches right through it--which means it isn't punching as hard as it technically could. But that's still pretty hard, and she goes for an abrupt flight, punctuated by a rolling thud in the grass.]

Ah...

[She wants to make some flippant remark, but everything kind of hurts, so maybe that's not so good.]

Haise Sasaki || OTA

[personal profile] dualismum 2016-07-20 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Calm before the storm

[ Haise doesn't feel comfortable around cameras, much less shaking hands with politicians while people take pictures, or even answering questions. When a reporter approaches, he shakes his head apologetic ] I'm sorry, no comments. [ and that's all he will say as he tries to get away from the cameras and flashes and recorders. People are free to save him if they see that he is getting swarmed by reporters; after all, sasaki has trouble saying "no".

When he escapes the reporters, Sasaki moves to the food area only to request a cup of iced coffee. It's not very chill, but it's good enough for him right now, while he heads to his seat. Just careful not to bump into him or your nice suit might be ruined. ]

First approach

[ once the first Earthquake hits, Sasaki is ready to help. He will be helping to evacuate, and this time he will be using something he never really planned on using in front of so many people: his kagune. With six red tendrils coming out of his back, all of them with what it looks like hands at the end, Sasaki grabs people who are about to fall, and protects some from the glass (using himself as a shield, since glass can't cut a ghoul). Anyone who is about to be trampled will have Sasaki's extra limbs for protection by forming something like net around them, or he will use the kagune and his super-strength to lift any object currently trapping (or on top of) anyone. ]

Fighting those things

[ the moment Sasaki realizes this isn't just an earthquake, his attention will turn to the... monsters? yes, let's call them monsters. Of course the first idea is to attack and slash; his kagune is still out and growing in size, but even though he aimed them to slash the creature, it didn't seem to do much - except worsen everything. The ground shakes harder and the earthquake worsens; the next couple of slashes allow the half-ghoul to figure out what is happening - at every hit, the earthquakes get worse.

But with little time to think about a strategy, Sasaki is faced with an upcoming punch from his enemy and all he can do is to rush his extra limbs forward and use them to protect himself. While they manage to protect him a bit against the brute force, it's not enough and Sasaki is sent flying, and hits a building. And falls to the ground after, of course.

Any normal person would probably have a really nasty concussion after that, but Haise still manages to stand up after, even if a bit wobbly, but his enemy isn't about to give him any time to rest. Another punch is coming.

That's going to hurt. ]

Sabriel | OTA

Before the attack

[Sabriel's enjoying herself. She's wearing a suit instead of a dress or her armor, and she's happy to answer questions from reporters and sample food from the buffet.

It's a nice party, and she's happy to get to see another city.]

Fighting

[Sabriel's first reaction when the quakes start is to leap to her feet and reach for a sword before she remembers that she's unarmed and unarmored.

Then she starts moving, reaching into the Charter as she sees the cause of the quakes- and realizes what they are.

Technology, in Sabriel's experience, does not fare well against magic- and though these creatures are flesh as well as metal, when she targets one it falls to a binding spell, their movements becoming slower and jerkier, the shaking caused by its feet suddenly lessening- and Sabriel moves onto the next one.

Right now, she'll focus on keeping them from causing damage while other imPorts take them out. She's weaving back and forth- staying out of reach of the monsters, but not getting so far away she can't easily target them.]

Healing

Hold on!

[Is your character the one that's injured? Or maybe they've just spotted Sabriel pulling an injured civilian to safety. Either way, she's putting her hands over their injuries, her hands tracing out mark after mark.]

Kaneda | OTA

[personal profile] rassera 2016-07-21 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
Before the attack

[Why is Kaneda here, you may ask? Because after the last little get together on the 4th of July, he's not taking any chances with not being there right off the bat--and being prepared to start. His bike was only a finger snap away, and he'd loaded it up with all the weapons it could carry in its glove compartment--which...kudos to Kaneda, is a lot if you arrange it just right. Some might think it's a little overboard, but after having been here a year, there are some habits that just form.

Attached to his boot is Sabriel's knife, and his jacket is tied around his waist with his tazer in the pocket. Is he a little paranoid? He prefers the term "prepared".

But with all that hidden, he's got it squared away if anything goes down. Other than that, he's hitting up that party, meandering too and fro from the buffet, taking a little bit of everything with each trip. He's wearing his usual yellow T-shirt and biker pants--because c'mon, did you really expect him to dress up for something like this?]

Fighting

[See, this is the shit he was talking about. He knows better than to attend a Swear-In/Ceremony/What-have-you without stocking up on at least something. The earthquakes were both unfamiliar and all too recognizable all at once--back home he'd had to deal with a crumbling city, both natural and unnatural forces being responsible for it.

And how familiar it was in this situation too, his eyes sizing up the 12 foot monstrosities, watching as their skin seemed to breath as they did. Their horns protruding, their durable skeletons, their hooves that could take a man out in one blow.]

Whoa. UG-LY.

[The monster seems to have heard that line, turning in his direction as he takes in the situation. Realizing....now might be a good time to get moving.

His feet ground themselves as he gets out of the cracking ground's range, clapping his hands immediately to cause his bike to appear underneath him--ready and already in motion. Getting away from it and swerving to the side, he parks it, tearing open that glove compartment and pulling out his two ornate guns and their holster, his wakizashi (the sword wouldn't fit, okay), and a few molotov cocktails to throw on his belt.

Call him paranoid, will you...]

Dunno where you guys came from, but I sure as hell know where you're going!

Party time!

[Michelangelo is wearing the same ridiculous bright orange top hat he wore to the last fancy party he had to attend although at least this time he left the rest of the outfit at home. He's having a fine time eating all the snacks and mingling with people whether they want to mingle with him or not. Basically he's leaning towards people with a big old grin on his face to greet them even if they've never spoken before. Friendly turtle making friends! Like a turtle do!]

Yo! They just keep having fancy pants parties, don't they? When are we gonna have a disco party? Or how about a toga party! Or maybe an old timey 80s party!

Man, stuff from the eighties is so OLD.

Evac

[Usually Michelangelo is always down for a good fight but there's sooo many people around already fighting and well. There's people who need help. So instead of worrying about the fight for now he's teleporting in and out, getting healthy and scared people awaaaay from the disaster as far as his power allows and getting healers to the people who can't go running for the hills. And when a bit of muscle is needed to lift up any debris he's handy enough for it. Mutants are made of pretty tough stuff.

When the earthquake shudders hard and sends more things tumbling down he's sheltering whoever is nearby, counting on his shell to take the brunt of whatever comes their way. Although sometimes he might get a good knock in the head.]

[Bianca is not a superhero. Being granted powers and ending up on another Earth doesn't automatically make anyone one. A mask, a costume, a secret alias: these are not things that define her, personally.

What she is is someone who has seen what happens when disaster strikes, when terrifying things- aliens, or in this case, monsters- attack.

The first time showed her the sort of world superheroes lived in. What they did.

That is not her focus today.

Bianca is a nurse, first and foremost, whatever they may have assigned as her job here.

At first, she can be found helping in the immediate vicinity of the museum, quickly helping assist local civilians- and imPorts, if they need it- with injuries big and small caused by the earthquake until the ambulances and EMTs arrive, yelling for and getting all of the medical kits from the museum itself set up outside near the fountain, as an attempt at triage and doing some basic treatment, away from the immediate dangers.

Any reporters trying to nose in here can be found getting shouted down and shamed by a woman who has no time to deal with them.

Much later in the day, Bianca can be found in various parts of the ruined city nearby, assisting an emergency response team with what she can- her work in the ER is a different skillset from that of a paramedic or EMT's, but it doesn't make her useless. Not when the constant earthquakes are tearing Philadelphia apart and limiting access to different parts of the city, making the hospitals limited in use.

The ability to make sandals appear from nowhere ends up being more useful than she would have expected- there are people missing footwear, and some of them are sturdy enough to be used as very makeshift braces and to help with applying pressure for injuries when supplies run low and there is no way to replenish them.

There's even the chance that one of the monsters may be approaching Bianca and the people she's working with. She isn't armed.]

In fact, she insisted on staying, because she's a healer and a fighter both, so she's there to do whatever she can - somewhere she found a bow (it's her bow) and a quiver of arrows (likewise hers) and she's wading into the fray, grimly, looking like she's taking no nonsense. She keeps pushing her way past people, telling those who look like they cannot fight to run and rallying those who can to her side.

But if someone is hurt she's there, too, happy to heal them. At some point she starts getting filthy with battle, her dress is not made for this in the least, but she keeps going.]

[Lance can't say no to a party! He's not exactly super dressed up but he's made the effort towards a nice enough business casual for the occasion. A few reporters chatted him up earlier but they moved on to more interesting and less flirty dorks after letting him have his fifteen minutes. He's hanging out around the food and trying to mingle with varying success.

His lion is with him and is contently sitting at his feet. He had put a little bow tie on him but the mechanical blue lion has long since pawed that off.]

Fighting

[This is a bad time for him to have left his armor at home in the bath tub to dry. Should have cleaned it yesterday and packed that shit away. Maybe next time.

I'm not good at fight threads so let's just be straight forward here. Lance and his lion are trying to encase these stupid monsters with ice. It was ice or laser beams! And Lance is quick enough to notice that force isn't exactly the best bet to go with here. Incapacitating seems the better option. That said it's a little hard to do it when everyone else is punching it or lasering it and whatever. Shattering the ice kind of undoes the whole process.]
