Throughout July - Lucky Cat Cafe - OTA

[Edward spends a lot of time in libraries which are boring and terrible places to meet people. Luckily, once he leaves libraries he's usually in the mood to get a bite to eat, and what better place than a cafe staffed by a slew of people he trusts? It's not at all uncommon to spot him in here tucked into a corner with a coffee, far too many sandwiches, and far too many books. Or approaching the counter with his nose in a book or staring at a wiki page he's pulled up on his phone—careful that he doesn't bump into you since he's sure as hell not paying attention then.]

[ The problem here is that Katou pays attention approximately 5% of the time. Which basically: Isn't enough. So he's playing with his phone with the fascination of a guy from the 90s who is still entranced by smart phones, and he's also paying more attention to the sandwich that he's trying to eat while not actually letting go of the phone and— Collisions happen, okay?! ]

Shit!

[ Ah, yes: The irritated cry of a teenager who just dropped his sandwich. ]

[Ed stumbles back a step, only just managing to keep from dropping the book that'd been distracting him.]

Ah—shit...

[Just his luck. He casts a quick glance around to see if Gregor or, even worse, Aral have noticed the collision just yet and hurriedly tucks his book under his arm. The last thing he wanted was whatever lecture or dry disapproval they'd have in store.] Sorry. I can buy you a new one.

[ Katou looks up properly from his phone... and then looks down slightly to get a proper look at Ed. He puts his phone away, stashed into the front pocket of his jeans for now. ]

It was probably at least as much my fault, but I'm not gonna complain about a free replacement.

[ He shrugs casually. ]

[Ed's already heading to the counter to put in an order for a replacement, only glancing over his shoulder at Katou once he's finished.]

I don't think either of us were looking, but I'm the one who'd get disapproving looks over it. I know some of the staff here.

[ Katou trails behind Ed, shoving one hand into his free pocket. ]

Oh, that'd do it. I don't actually know anyone here, yet. [ And then he adds with a low mutter: ] The looks probably wouldn't stop me if I did...

July 9 - Vorkosigan Residence - Closed to Residents/characters with keys

[It's been some time since Ed's automail was decimated, and after a couple of weeks of nearly nonstop work Winry has finally finished it! The two of them have also taken advantage of this opportunity to test out some modern anesthetics to try to reduce the painful shock that comes along with reconnecting the automail to Ed's nervous system. The drug they picked this time definitely worked—Ed didn't so much as flinch when she tightened the final connection—but Ed's...definitely riding high on it. He's spent the last fifteen minutes just opening and closing the automail hand like it's the most amazing thing there is in the world.]

[ It worked!! It wooooorkeddddd she engineered it from scratch in a new material with a crappy work room and it didn't even hurt him it workedddd.

On the other hand Winry is now just fuckin pooped. Like basically the very moment the arm passed initial diagnostics, she just lets herself flop across his lap and lets her work gloves plop down beside her. ]


I did it. I'm the best. I am the worlds number one Winry.

[It worked! And his arm looks soooo good.

Ed manages to look over at her when she speaks but he's real slow to focus on her and flash a lopsided grin.]

You're...super Winry.

[ Buddy she is face down on this couch. ]

[ well. good then. satisfied that he will be an obedient pillow, she curls against him a bit, getting comfortable. ]

Zoo - Winry, Mark, and stalkers spying on their definitely-not-a-date

[This outing may have been a little delayed while people recovered from Lucifer's attack—or from suddenly becoming alternate versions of themselves—or from losing an arm. But now! In a brief moment where nothing has gone wrong or exploded or been crushed into scrap metal, three teens have finally made it to the zoo!

Ed is certainly excited about the trip. He's read about plenty of animals in text books; clinical explanations regarding how to fuse them together or what animals make the best bases for chimera; but just reading was no comparison for getting to see them for himself—especially just for the pure sake of looking at them. There was no study to conduct, no research to do, nothing more than to watch some animals and enjoy the company of his friends.]

What do you guys want to see first?

[ Mark, meanwhile, has only ever seen holovids, pictures, the like, of animals he should know to be an educated galactic. A few up-close encounters with a horse that still leave him shuddering. Very little experience with real honest-to-god animals in the flesh. He knows, of course, which animals he likes the best, which ones are his favorites, but he's going to play it cool. He has to look cool. So he points with deliberate casualness at the mountain area of the zoo. ]

Why don't we start over there?

[Ed lifts up on his toes as subtly as he can manage to look at where Mark's pointing.]

Oh, that looks good. They've got really fancy goats and sheep around there, right?

Fancy goats huh? Just how fancy can a goat get?

I guess we could find out.

[ He directs a half-smile down at the ground, then lifts his head to look off in that direction. Then he turns and starts leading the way. ]

De Chima - Alphonse

[Ed doesn't look like he understands the situation any better than Al does. His brow furrows deeply while he tries to make sense of things, a few hints of alarm beginning to creep into his expression.]

It's... Al, I don't think our time is lined up. [It couldn't be, but even that didn't answer everything for Ed. The Colonel had been sure the Elrics were both safe and sound after the battle in Central, but here was Al insisting he'd disappeared completely. His mouth twists uneasily, and he takes a deep breath before continuing.]

For me, I saw you just a few days ago when we fought Pride near Lior. I went on ahead to face the fight in Central, and that...that isn't finished for me. I was still in the middle of that fight when I was brought here. So I don't... I don't know what happened at the end. I didn't even know Rose was anywhere near there.

[For the first time since seeing him through the crowd Al looks away from his brother. He stares at the ground instead as he thinks through what Ed’s just told him.

Fighting Pride doesn’t sound familiar, though that probably just got left out or forgotten about when people were catching him up the four years he missed. That was bound to happen, he can dismiss that. And the discrepancy of a few days versus a few years is unexpected, but easily enough explainable. Time must flow differently on this side of the gate.

What doesn’t make sense is how Ed could have been in the underground city, at the end of the battle, if he got stuck here before that happened.

If that’s true though, it does explain something else;] Is that—that’s why your surprised about my body. You haven’t help me get it back yet?

[Ed, on the other hand, can't look away from Al, almost like he's afraid that he'll vanish if he does. It's been years since he got to see him anything like this, and months since he's seen him at all. He can't risk that it really is just some cruel dream.]

That's right. When I was brought here you were still...still in that armor.

[If that’s the case then... then it’s probably better to tell Ed now, rather than later, about the side effect that followed getting his body back.]

I have something to tell you about that, brother. Maybe we should go somewhere else?

[They’ve already put enough of their personal life on display.]

Oh—yeah! Of course! [Of course Al was right—he always was. Anywhere would be better than talking with these reporters watching raptly, especially with all the questions he wanted to ask him.]

We can go back to the estate—uh. Where I've been staying, I mean. Winry too! We can use her workshop for some real privacy.

Winry’s here? [Despite the topic moments ago, that brings about a smile. It feels like forever since all three of them have all been one place, it’s exciting.]
