[A month since being so abruptly pulled away from his duties as commandant isn't all that much time to adjust, but Flynn really thinks he's been doing admirably. It's strange to have so much free time and no real paperwork--aside from the matter of the fashion magazines he's been poring over, to no visible effect--but having so little to manage here means that the few things he does have control over get meticulous personal attention.

He's in the middle of his daily campaign against the untidiness of the living room, futilely straightening couch cushions when he hears the footsteps of one of his housemates. The good mood from cleaning lasts until he glances up and sees Kagari; his temper might have had plenty of time to cool since FanPort, but no matter how he turns it over in his mind, he's still basically disapproving of someone who'd take advantage of other people without caring that there were other options.

...On the other hand, that was the only incident so far. And since he's managed to escape unscathed without seeing the body pillow in question, he's feeling charitable enough to yield a tiny bit.]

...Hello.

[That's basically friendly, right?]

[Oh right, this douchebag! They had some unfinished business. He was going to play a video game but a real life fight is better than any button mashing. Plus he's been itching to use his powers in combat. Dicking around with them at the con had been fun and helped him get used to fine tuning it (and not accidentally falling through the floor sometimes), but he hasn't had a really challenge to face up to yet. He'd meant to get to this sooner after their initial meeting, but they seemed to keep just missing each other. But now it was time.

Time to rumble.]

Hey. So lets get to it, unless all that talk earlier was just bluffing.

[He hooks his thumbs into his pockets, and leans back a bit an absolute picture of cockiness.]

[Well that went from zero to rude pretty fast. Flynn straightens and frowns over at Kagari, folding his arms across his chest.]

You don't need to pick a fight with me when I already offered to spar. There's a park nearby I train at sometimes. Do you need to get your weapons?

[It should probably concern him a little more that he has no idea what Kagari's powers actually are, but he's not backing down an inch either.]

['Spar' sure. Call it what you want Kagari's aiming for an ass kicking. He swings his arms up, pulling one arm then the other across his chest as quick probably ineffective stretches.]

Nope. Only weapon I've ever used is a nail gun. Which doesn't seem too sporting.

[Sure there's no such thing as a 'fair fight', but there definitely is a salient difference between fighting for fun and actually trying to kill a dude. He frowns a bit, almost looking disappointed.]

Not familiar with hand to hand?

[If he wasn't this fight might not be as satisfying as he thought it was going to be.]

["Sporting," from the guy who told him it was too much trouble to not con people. Flynn shoots him a look that's halfway between skeptical and considering.]

I'm familiar enough.

[And, once he thinks about it a little, not even that disappointed. A good honest brawl was satisfying in its own way. He nods towards the door and heads that way, apparently expecting Kagari to follow.]

Are we using powers or not?

[He does follow, grin returning.]

I'm gonna be using mine, but you can do what you want.

[The answer is 'yes'.]

Then expect the same from me.

[He's not unbending enough to smile by any means, but he's not hiding his enthusiasm for a fight anywhere near as well as he thinks he is.]

[Kagari's walk is...bouncy. He's excited and not bothering to try and hide it. He sizes Flynn up from a pace behind him, wondering exactly what his powers were. He could ask of course, but then he'd get prompted to share his own as well, and he wants to keep the element of surprise on his side.

He jams his hands in his pockets, eager to get started.]

[Flynn stops at the park and glances around, apparently satisfied. In another city they might be in danger of spectators, but Maurtia Falls is more likely to leave well enough alone.]

This should be enough space, correct?

[For... whatever Kagari's powers were. Oh well, the surprise just makes things exciting.]

[He stretches his arms out in front of him and cracks his knuckles.]

Should be plenty.

[Speaking of surprises Kagari wheels back and immediately throws a punch at Flynn's face. ROUND ONE START.]

[He probably should have seen that coming, and he was just about to offer Kagari the first move anyway, but still. His startled jerk backwards isn't enough to fully dodge and Kagari's fist clips him on the cheek, stinging but mostly succeeding in ticking him off. He only takes a second to recover before stepping in to swing for Kagari's face in return.]

So this is how you fight?

I fight to win.

[Kagari makes zero attempt to dodge the incoming punch. But it doesn't hit him. It goes right through his face. Tada~ His power is phasing. He takes a step through Flynn, turning as he goes so that he comes out the other side facing his opponent's back. Then he gives his shoulders a hard shove.

This power almost makes this too easy.]

Wh--

[Off-balance from his punch not connecting WITH anything he takes a stumbling step forward before catching himself and spinning, lashing out to keep Kagari from closing in too fast. That's a stranger power than he expected, but he has to get solid again to attack, right? Right. Hopefully.]

[He does, and he knows it too, but luckily for him there's not much if any of a visual indicator of when he's solid or not. His fighting style is normally a lot more direct, but if he wants to get good at using his powers he's going to have to master bluffing.

And as much as he might think this power is all advantage, all his muscle memory is geared to actually, y'know, blocking things. Which is what he does with Flynn's next strike, arm up and ready to stop his hit, except it is also completely intangible. so when the hit goes through him he flinches before remembering that no, that's still a good thing.

So while normally he'd be all about exploiting every weakness of an enemy, right now he's a little too confused to be effective. So he backs up a pace, making himself solid and trying to gather his bearings again.]

[Flynn takes a step back too, but only to get a little more room to really launch himself forward for a punch. He hadn't quite missed that flinch.]

Hm. So it's a new power.

[It's a guess, but an educated one just the same. If he's right that means he's at a considerable advantage, fighting without his sword or not. Which... might just barely offset having an intangible opponent.]

[It's become habit for Yuri to cook for the two of them in the evening, and so when Flynn comes over, Yuri is already in the midst of preparations. But his mood definitely seems a little... off. Things getting slammed, those carrots are getting chopped with much more force than carrots usually need. Yuri's jaw is tight and unhappy.]

[It really doesn't take Flynn's level of expertise to read the signs of Yuri's mood. He raises an eyebrow over at him and rolls up his sleeves, reaching over to hold out his hand for the knife.]

What did those carrots say to you? I'll give you a hand with them.

[At first Yuri just rolls his eyes, but he really can't take his mood out on Flynn when he's cracking stupid jokes. He relents, passing the knife over and moving out of the way.]

Ha, ha. It's not the carrots.

[There's no point stating the obvious so Flynn just takes the knife and bumps shoulders companionably with Yuri as he takes his place, glancing over to watch his face as he briskly dices carrots.]

So what happened?

I'm going to have to look for a new job.

[It's a good thing he has steady hands. The rhythm of chopping falters just a little in surprise, but he's not in any danger of cutting his fingers.]

A--what about that Dendarii thing?

Dooku cut me loose; I'm pretty sure getting let go by your assignment is a pretty clear grounds for termination.

Did Miles say so already? No guild can expect to please every client.

[If he hadn't spoken to Dooku once and if Yuri didn't seem so agitated he'd probably ask again about what happened, but he's got a feeling he can take an educated guess.]

[He sighs.]

I don't know if he operates the same way as a guild. Dooku's a pretty important client.

If he's that important, Miles should have made his assignments more carefully. It should've been obvious that you wouldn't get along.

Did... you hit your head?

[Well that pulls him out of his train of thought long enough to shoot Yuri an irritated look.]

What's that supposed to mean?

You're passing up a pretty good opportunity to lecture me.

If I did, would you listen to me this time? That would be a first.

No, but it's never stopped you before.

It's not like there's anything illegal about being fired. [PROBABLY... What did you do, Yuri.] And if I had to tell you to take your job seriously, it was already hopeless.

... Thanks? I think? You know I took it seriously; I know how to deal with clients. This guy was just went out of his way to be obnoxious.

I know. [After a moment he makes a small noise of amusement, a little fond.]

That's just like you. You can keep your cool facing a whole horde of monsters, but as soon as some noble starts acting like a noble...

I like hordes of monsters.

They are more straightforward to deal with.

Yes, but I don't let them know that. That's exactly the kind of thing that makes them harder to deal with.

You could let me take care of it sometimes, you know. You don't have to look after me this much. [But hey, he's happy. And Yuri probably wants the distraction today anyway.]

[MUTTERS, under his breath:] I'm definitely looking out for myself...

[ICE COLD, YURI.] Hm?

It's fine. I'll have more free time than you for a while, anyway. How's your job coming?

Well, it's secure, anyway. [He reaches up to absentmindedly tap where the dog tags hang under his shirt.] I think I must be improving at it.
