"Yes. I thought I could handle things. I thought I was good enough on my own to do it. It was prideful, and wrong." And he hates himself for it. It must be something in his genetics that make him predisposed towards this sort of behavior. It's how his father acts, it's how his mother acts, and he hates them both for this trait. And yet, he still finds himself on the same sort of path as them, falling for the same ways. It's why he should atone for this. Along with making his teammates... his real family, worry about him. He is still getting tripped up on his pride.
