"That certainly explains an aesthetic over functional approach, though there is one thing that sticks out to me more because of that. Raise your arms, please." She crosses around in front of him, addressing the audience again as she finally comes to her point.

"I was just talking about this, so maybe some of you noticed. aside from the small flaps on his underarms, Spider-Man has a rather generic silhouette, don't you think? There's an interesting thing about that, I think." She pats him on the shoulder. "Seeing him stand here like a normal person is actually a bit of a rarity! I've seen the ma in action, and he always seems to be crouching, hanging upside-down, clinging to some surface a person isn't meant to, or otherwise moving. The dynamism in Spider-Man's silhouette all comes from his physicality!"

But it makes sense, in a way, that he started out in television. There's always been a bit of showmanship in the way he fights crime, the charisma of a performer. Maybe there was a time when he really was one, he simply chose a different stage.

Spidey raises his arms obediently, though not without rolling his eyes. Kanaya may not be able to tell, but it's the principle of the matter.

"Yeah, well, I tried going for the full eight limbs a couple of times, but the focus groups didn't go for it," is his contribution to the discussion.

The quip elicits a laugh, from both Kanaya and the audience. She waits a moment until the crowd has settled before she responds. "Well, that brings up another question I've always wondered about. Why spiders?"

"For that matter," she muses, placing a finger on one of his forearms, the least awkward place she could imagine to focus on the particular element, "how long did it take to sew all of the web detailing? Did you make the suit yourself, or was there someone who just does this sort of thing for superheroes on your world?"

She'd like to think she could be that person on this one, if she can get enough of them to recognize the quality of her work.

"Kanaya, I spin webs and climb up walls. What else would I call myself? The Webbed Wonder? Spinderella? It's not like I got bitten by a radioactive cockroach. Which is good, 'cause I am way too big to hide under the dishwasher whenever someone turns on the light."

Spidey lowers his arms, reflexively glancing down at Kanaya's touch. "Uh, up until very recently it's been me and my trusty Singer. Sometimes help from--" the briefest hesitation, as Peter internally debates how to refer to MJ and Felicia in a very public space "--friends."

Scattered across the audience, five different people start composing rumblr posts about whether Peter Parker is one of those friends. Or maybe the only friend. Quote-unquote.

"Back on my -- do I get to call it my home planet? That's gotta be one of the imPort perks -- back home, most heroes make their own suits, but some of them get designs and tech from other folks in the hero community -- or from that guy in Queens who takes hero and villain clients on alternate days, which works way better than you'd think. But my current suit was a gift from Val Richards, who used to be part of the Future Foundation here. She got sent home, but not before giving me this."

Spidey poses arms akimbo, and a ripple of black washes down his suit, like someone poured an ink bottle over his head. In moments the suit is all-black, except for the ghostly lenses and much-larger spider logo emblazoned on his chest in white. The crowd oohs and aahs, but just as the applause dies down the costume flips to red with gold metallic details. Then back to the classic blue-and-reds.

"It's made with unstable molecules."

She leads the crowd in another round of applause. HE's bringing his A-game, it's only fair to pause and appreciate it.

The spider-bite, that she'd never heard of, and it does fill in quite a number of blanks. Though it still leaves plenty of others open, like how many radioactive spiders must be around on Peter's world, biting people? Those spider-powers seem to get handed out like candy on Halloween!

But, as a seamstress, the part that primarily takes her attention is the fabric. She's had to work with others to devise new ways of making fabrics to work with, so hearing how they managed the same thing on other worlds is right up her alley. "What are the unstable molecules, exactly? Is that what the fabric is compromised of?"

In defense of Peter's world, at least one spider was pulling double bite duty. Also, clones.

Meanwhile in the present, Spidey scratches at the back of his head and shrugs. "It is, and they're designed to adapt to the superpowers of their user -- the quick-change aspect is a bonus feature. I really can't say more than that, though -- it's proprietary technology, and not my proprietary."

Her eyes widen at that, but quickly deflate, disappointed. She rests a hand on her chin, cocking her hips to one side. "Mm. Pity, I could get quite a lot of use out of something like that. I had all of my fabrics designed by an imPort who isn't around anymore, and some of them were very specialized."

To illustrate, she raises a hand and lets out her glow, the green accents of her suit mirroring her glow with a neon shine of their own. "We can reproduce what he made, for those specific cases, but I'm a bit limited, if anything else would arise, needing its own treatment."
