Crew? Guess 'commander' isn't a nickname...

[It's Tetsuo's turn to look a little perplexed. He hadn't managed to line up Kaidan... unless he means Kasumi? As being underneath someone else. Those two shared the same world, he was positive of that.

Huh. He's not sure how he feels about that. But that look is gone in the next moment, replaced by casual suspicion.]

Sure. I could look inside your head, see what you remember.

[If he wanted to. If he had to. It wasn't always pleasant.]

[ Shepard nods. ]

I was the commanding officer aboard a ship called the Normandy. [ His mouth twitches a little, like there's a joke somewhere about that statement ... ] Some of the people I worked with ended up here, too.

[ At the statement, his face creases into a frown, though he doesn't quite step back, there's a definite pause. ]

Ah. [ A pause. ] How does that work?

[iamtetsuo]

Ah. I see.

[It's Tetsuo's turn to smile to himself, but it's less benign and slower to fade. Something about being able to do this to the commanding officer is a little too enticing. Taking power from those who always had it, giving it to people like him who never did... things change around, don't they?

Not that he has anything against Shepard personally. If he did, would he even ask?]

Wanna find out?

[That tone sounds nowhere near as pleasant or innocent as his young-sounding voice would generally hint.]

[ Shepard snorts, crossing his arms. ]

Not if you're demonstrating on me. I've had too many things in my head to volunteer for that kind of thing.

[ Those hadn't been by choice, for the most part, and those that weren't forced on him were driven largely by desperation and the need for information. After a moment, he shrugs. ]

Of course, you could be doing it right now, and I wouldn't even know.

[iamtetsuo]

[But he's not. While it gets easier every time, it's still not worth the headache to do it randomly. But Shepard doesn't have to know that, and while he's bad at lying, acknowledging the possibility isn't a lie.]

Maybe I'm just asking you to make you think about it... You'd know if I let you know. I don't always.

[Ehhh, fuck that noise, he's not great at mind games despite his skill set.]

[ He seems serious about it, too, but his expression lightens a little, and he uncrosses his arms. ]

I don't think we've actually met before. You already know my name, so ... mind telling me yours?

[If this place weren't already a huge headache... eh, whatever. That should be sarcasm, but this guy seems so sincere about it. Come on, most people would be at least more wary than THAT.]

We haven't. I don't make a habit of dealing with military guys in general.

[Kaidan's just an exception. Once he's gotten the disclaimer out of the way, he'll actually answer that question.]

[No last name. He's done the best he can to erase all trace of that, but his skills are limited. It's around.]

You're not the first one to say that.

[ That's more murmured to himself than Tetsuo, though.

Shepard doesn't waste a lot of time being unncessarily paranoid ... either the kid is screwing him over, or he isn't. He hates the idea of his mind being manipulated and pried into again, but he suspects it would be easy to tell, in this case -- someone with no compunction coming up to a stranger and demanding information likely isn't someone who necessarily cares about being subtle. ]

I'm Commander Shepard, but you knew that already. Just Shepard works fine.

[iamtetsuo]

[He's not wrong. Tetsuo typically operates with all the subtlety of a thrown brick. But he also operates with all the gleeful mayhem that ensues, given half a chance and a reason.]

Shepard, huh?

[He... tries to say it, at least. His accent gets in his way some.]

I'm not gonna be the last one, either. Anyone with an ounce of sense that isn't military's gonna say that.

I'm not technically part of the military here. Just a police officer. [ The quick, wry smile that flickers across his face suggests he finds a touch of humor in the claim -- knowing that's not necessarily something that makes it better.

Besides, you can take the Commander out of the Alliance, but you can't take the Alliance out of the Commander... ]

I was an Alliance brat, so I guess I have a different perspective. [ A shrug. ] I don't take it personally. It's not like I always see eye to eye with the military, either.

Alliance?

[He has to think a moment on that, back to history... yeah, no, he's still not getting it.]

Like Allied forces or something?

Something like that. It started out as a group of countries coming together to spearhead space exploration. Now, the Systems Alliance is the official representative of humanity in the galaxy.

It has a few different branches, but my parents were part of the military -- like me and Kaidan.
