[joke's on you Raina, it's more than a little of both. not that you'd ever know from the nonchalant way she shrugs off the attempt at probing.]

Well, I can sure as hell figure out that you're reading way too far into pretty much fucking everything, so at least there's that.

[not that it prevents her shoulders from hitching up a little, a shift in posture that her conversation partner is sure to catch. it's stupid, especially so considering who she's talking with, but Hazel can't help herself. even after all this time she never really expects Josuke to be thinking about little details like that.]

Not like I'm the only person in the world someone wouldn't wanna take out to eat.

[ She counters airily, casting the blame. Hazel brings it on herself, really! ]

When offered free meal for a person and their love interest, a normal person would take them up on the offer rather than trying to figure out something else. Even if it isn't the most preferable of dates, it is a free one. Unless, of course, the other person can't eat.

[just going to icily ignore that unwarranted blame, thanks all the same. and she's got a perfectly acceptable reason for not eating in front of anyone if Raina would care to pay attention for more than three seconds!!!]

You only want this to be a thing so you can poke and prod and see how high I'll jump. Well, too fucking bad! Josuke's a weird guy, the dumbass shit he does has nothing to do with me.

[hands on her hips now, cheeks puffed out in righteous outrage. she is so determined to never confirm this it's almost admirable in the face of all the obvious facts.]

[ She sighs and shakes her head. ]

You're wrong, Hazel. I want this to be a thing so you could actually be happy. The way I'm happy with Frederick. The way one whole year passed for us and at the end of it we're still together. More people in this world deserve to know that feeling. Even someone like you.

[ The comment could have been sweet if she hadn't had to go ahead and tack on that little jab at the end. ]

Someone like me doesn't need a boyfriend to know how valuable being loved is.

[it's amazing, really, the way a single comment can completely transform Hazel. suddenly that flustered girl straightens up into something icy cold that would probably freeze a lesser person solid.

no one knows how precious a loyal love is more than Hazel. garbage is rarely valued higher than it ought to be, and to have that remain unwavering no matter how many of her ugly sides she exposed? even she's not stupid enough to cherish that.]

Perhaps so, perhaps not. But there is something undeniably wonderful about having that support a relationship brings.

[ For Raina, it's everything. She doesn't have any friends. The people here have proven how little she can trust them, even when she had started to open up to the prospect. They only served to solidify the fact that she was and always will be alone. She can only trust Frederick. ]

It's liberating when you stop hiding from it. My bit of friendly advice.

[Hazel doesn't need to do anything to have people support her; she's such an odious entity that there's nothing she herself could initiate to spark or even strengthen loyalty. everything that happens, everyone who cares about it, it's all of their own volition.

it's equal parts amazing and terrifying. all those miracles could be swept away the instant any of her friends realized how unsalvageable she truly was - and all Hazel could do was let them go.

she's sincere about what she says, though, even underneath the layers of aggressive protectiveness. Josuke had cared for her with the attention and sensitivity of a stereotypical lover long before he'd even thought about kissing her.]

That isn't what I'm saying at all.

[ It's frustrating as much as it is disappointing. And while she knows this is Hazel's defense mechanism, it does seem that lately all of her words are being twisted around to things she doesn't mean -- which simply makes her all the more impatient in regards to it. ]

And if that is what you're implying the relationship between Frederick and I is like, then you're dead wrong.

[it isn't just Raina's words that she's warping, although as always Hazel is fairly confident that it's difficult for anyone else to understand the double meaning. and if not? well, this time it wasn't something she'd be sorry to be called out on.

a woman with an uncomfortable interest in people's potential and immense skill in the genetic field. a man in a profession known throughout the imPort community for bad fortune who treated the psychotically unstable. no, she's certain that it wasn't just carnal pleasure that held these two together for so long.]

[ Raina rolls her eyes. Hazel did succeed in one thing, driving Raina away from the conversation at least! ]

Well, keep on hiding your obvious relationship, I suppose. May you two enjoy your pointless secrecy.
