[Kel's eyes widen at the figure next to her and she swiftly looks forward again, clenching her hands into fists to stop them trembling.

She's quiet for a long moment as she fights to tamp her panic down with all the logic she can-too small, fingers instead of knives, that was NOT a child's voice, not here, not here...-but luckily or unluckily, the panic finds something else to grab onto:]

"F-flies?"

Yup.

[He actually looks over at his seatmate, as she sounds nervous.]

You've never been on a plane before?

[Kel's knuckles go white as she clenches her fingers tighter, slowly inhaling and exhaling.]


They don't exist where I'm from.

[Remembering Balor's Needle wasn't helping right now, she had a feeling this would go much higher...]

Ah.

[Perhaps she is from a world more like Ana's.]

It's perfectly safe, you know. I can't remember the odds of accidents on flights like these but it's ridiculously low. Like, one out of a hundred thousand or something.

[Trying to find her meditation breathing pattern, Kel shakes her head very slightly. Why is the air so stale, it is the opposite of helping]

Heights.

[She hasn't thrown up because of them in years, and she does NOT want to start now]

[Pause.]

You...might want to not look out the window when we take off, then.

[She stares fixedly at the seat in front of her and nods. Meditation pattern, meditation pattern...]

How long is it?

[mammal_robot]

Two, three hours? Mainly it's just kind of boring and cramped.

[protects_the_small]

[There's a jolt as the plane starts taxiing to the runway. Kel closes her eyes and tries to concentrate on her breathing]

I suppose this can't really be a dream anymore. Usually my nightmares don't strap me in before I fall.

I have been on like a hundred flights like this. We're not going to fall.

[There is a little bit of him, though, that is pretty sure that by saying that he just jinxed it.]

[INHALE....exhale...INHALE...exhale...

Goddess and Mithros please do not let her vomit.

There is a jolt as the plane leaves the ground. And that wasn't an undignified sqawk, she is an adult and a warrior]

[It sounded like a squawk but that must just be his imagination.]

See? Nothing to it. In a big plane like this it almost feels like we're still on the ground.

[And it probably does when you remember getting air dropped into Sicily in World War 2. Or crashing an experimental jet into the South Pacific in the 1950s. Probably less so if you're a knight who's never been in the sky before.]

[Breathing and staring straight ahead doesn't work if she can still see the movement of the ground dropping away under them out of the corner of her eye, so Kel presses her face into her hands and continues to breathe]

Yes. Very helpful.

[After a bit of this, Robo reaches over her and lowers the shutter on the window.]

There.

[Its a few more breaths before she rouses enough to realize the light is gone, and sits up to lean back in her own seat again. She stays silent until the flight attendant comes by to offer drinks and she manages to ask for water. Then she finally managed to look back at her seatmate]

One that mostly depended on horses and feet to move things.
