WHO: Sai and Maya
WHERE: Nonah
WHEN: Sometime pre-kidnapping
WHAT: Sai hangs out with Maya and tries to approximate functioning like a human being.
WARNINGS: None expected.
[Sai arrives at the designated meeting place at the Porter about 10 minutes early. Which was probably unnecessary, given that transportation to Nonah occurs instantaneously, but ninja habits die hard. The soldiers seem somewhat uncomfortable at an imPort just...lingering by a Porter facility, and sometimes one approaches to say something to him, but as soon as he asks "Is there a problem?" they seem to lose their nerve and scurry off.
It's not that Sai cuts an intimidating figure. At a mere 5'6'' and 116 pounds, he's fairly slight compared to some of the soldiers at the base. But the fact is, he tends to have an "uncanny valley" sort of effect on people, being just slightly not quite right, with his too-pale skintone and his blunted facial expressions and lack of much vocal inflection. He's starting to improve at making his social smiles look more natural, at least, but he's only been at this for a year--and before Naruto had arrived, he'd mostly gone it alone.
Much to the soldiers' relief, once he spots Maya, he starts to make his way toward her, and toward the exit of the Porter facility. He doesn't wave at her, does little to acknowledge he's seen her except move toward her until he reaches, and offers one of those slightly overpracticed smiles in greeting.]

But Sai's practiced geniality doesn't stop Maya from being as genuine as usual. She practically bounces over to him, unafraid, and offers a hand to shake.]

[...ah, handshakes. That one comes less naturally, but he's read about it in his books. He just...grabs her hand and moves it up and down, right? The movement is a little stiff and it's a little more like he's shaking her wrist than her hand, but it's really close to the proper gesture. Like it's a skill that just needs more practice to be perfected.]

I come from a society of shinobi--ninjas, as you might know them. We live in specialized villages organized in...ah, perhaps the closest analogue is a military hierarchy. There are five main countries that have shinobi villages. Mine is called Konohagakure, in the Land of Fire.
