→ ( CLOSED - can't find song lyrics about dogs )
WHO: Athos & d'Artagnan.
WHERE: Animal Sanctuary, De Chima.
WHEN: October 10th.
WHAT: Adopting a dog.
WARNINGS: Two beardy men looking at puppies together.
[ It's been a while since he first mentioned it to his friend but not long enough that he'd forget it in entirety. So on Saturday the pair of them head into town. They walk because Athos isn't sure how a dog from that kind of place will react to a horse and because he wanted to stretch his legs. It's a nice day out and it's easy enough and he enjoys the company even if he stays silent for most of it.
Of course when they hit the town itself Athos finally pipes up. ] Have you thought any more about what kind of dog would be appropriate for the land?
[ He has done his best. He even used the ... google thing to try and look at breeds but then he got soo frustrated that getting drunk had been a better use of his time. He hopes d'Artagnan is more educated on the matter.
Then, with the air of someone who actually gossips a lot but pretends he doesn't. ]
Madame Hawke is getting one too. Did you know? But she seems to be favouring the smaller of them. [ Athos hadn't figured out through the messages that she's going for the tiny but grows into a mammoth kind as a trick. ]

Athos doesn't say much else until they are inside the shelter, until he has made sure he has to have no part in dealing with the public side of things. Were he here in an official capacity he would have no trouble speaking to any number of the people milling around in ugly branded polo shirts but he is not.
It's been six months and Athos has mostly fallen back on old ways. He has always enjoyed being a hermit. ]
No doubt.
[ He cannot imagine being an animal in a place like this. It almost reminds him of a prison. ] I'm sure whichever one [ all of them] we take home will be glad to have the open space and fresh air of the farm.

[ D'Artagnan is still listening, his head raised to the room. ]
There's so many. Even from here you can tell.
[ He looks at Athos, his face wary. ]
We're taking one, yes? You know that.
[ In theory, they had room for more than that. They had fields to fill, and it wasn't as though they had any livestock. Not unless the horses counted. But still, animals were hard work, and d'Artagnan had spent most of his formative years tending to them. ]
Ah, there she is.
[ The receptionist was friendly enough. After producing the forms that they would, indeed, need to sign at the end of all this, she started to lead them back into the main part of the building. ]

[ He follows the receptionist easily, keeping his gait matched to d'Artagnan's. When they get out back he hears all the excited yapping of both old and young dogs, his gaze drifting into cages at the faces of eager animals. Maybe one day he should retire and set up a sanctuary.
When he passes one particular dog with an incredible grey mustache and scowl and he nudges d'Artagnan. ] Remind you of anyone?

That face is just everywhere these days. This one seems less likely to bite my hand off. He's well behaved.
[ And drawing the kind of smile to d'Artagnan's face that belies his insistence that they would only bring one. He loves animals, is the thing. He always has. ]
Not all strays would be so friendly. I wonder who his owner was.

[ Athos watches his friend with fondness written on his face. It's not like he didn't know. He watches d'Artagnan, has seen him with the horses or with the animals in homes they have to visit as part of their duty. He is just as weak as Athos is. ]
Of course we'd have to change his name to something more appropriate. [ It's all very hypothetical, even as Athos moves closer and preforms a little bow to the dog in question. ] Your eminence.
[ The dog doesn't care, he simply seems to be enjoying the attention. ]

Stop that.
[ But he’s smirking, despite himself. The dog has nosed over to them, limping a little. D’Artagnan leans around, looking at the leg in question.
The worker seems to have noticed their distraction, because from somewhere behind, she is quick to explain. ]
That one had an infection, a couple weeks back. He’ll be fine, but he’s still recovering. He wouldn’t be up to guarding you boys yet.
no subject
Neither would a puppy.
[ Meaning that he knew guarding would be a little way off.
To his friend. ] What do you think?
no subject
Honestly, if it's an injury, they'd probably be able to nurse it back to health easily enough. And once it was healed, it would be less trouble than a puppy.
He looks around. ]
What is his name?
[ The attendant shakes her head. ]
He came in without a collar. We've just been calling him Tash, you know. Because of the 'tache?
[ When d'Artagnan is quiet, the attended just smiles. ]
'Course, you guys can change that if you want.
[ D'Artagnan looks back at Athos. ]
It's your choice. I've cared for hurt animals before. We could help him, if you want.
no subject
And of course he wants it. An injured thing nursed back to health can always become stronger. That had been something the Musketeers taught him. And the dog is not so old that they cannot too teach it something new. ]
Most people will overlook him because of his limp and the time it might take to care for him. [ Because the modern world is full of shameful behaviour such as that. ] I think perhaps we owe it to the poor creature simply because we can.
[ There's plenty of space, fresh air, they can afford a veterinarian. Athos crosses his arms and looks at his friend. ] You'd agree with me?
no subject
They can give him the proper care. D'Artagnan looks up at Athos with a nod. ]
I do. He needs time and some patience. We can manage that.
[ The attendant looks between them, clearly interested. This isn't the dog she'd expected them to choose. ]
You say you've taken care of injured animals before?
[ D'Artagnan nods, while petting the dog's head. ] I grew up on a farm, around sheep. My father kept dogs. He won't be any trouble.
[ The attendant looks to Athos, her eyebrows raised. ] And, and you, sir? Do you have experience with this? A little guy like this will need a lot of love.
no subject
[ Athos has always been most proud of d'Artagnan before anything else, and just because he has never had to deal with an injured creature like this does not mean he could not.
What better kind of dog for them? And Lucy will dote, he is sure of it. ]
no subject
The attendant seems to notice, because she smiles between the pair of them. ]
Okay, then. There’s a few forms we’ll need to complete, in my office. If you guys are ready, we can do that now – or if you want, I’ll still show you the puppies.
[ D’Artagnan has his arm around the terrier by now, but at that question, he looks up at Athos. ]
They’re what you wanted. It wouldn’t hurt.
honestly i hope the attendant believes they are husbands tbh
His expression remains stoic, his voice sounding bored. It wouldn't do for a thirty year old miserable git to be excited about puppies. ] We're here. We might as well.
[ Then to the Terrier. ] Don't worry, old man. We'll be back for you soon enough.
look she can if you want her to
I hope you have a better name for him than that. Come on.
[ The attendant leads them into another room, where it’s clear the dogs are much younger. They must keep them separated by age, as far as possible. The litter that Hawke had directed them to is at the back, and taken by them, d’Artagnan makes a beeline to them. ]
Here they are. God, they’re tiny.
[ But curious. When he crouches beside them, three nudge over to sniff at his hand. ]
goes home to talk about the married leather gays
They're feisty.
[ He picks up the one who attacked him and strokes it gently on the head. ]
Hello, you. [ He enjoys dogs. He enjoys all animals. They don't ask him questions. ] You're a little thing, aren't you?
no subject
It's probably safe to say we'll take one of these as well. You said there were forms we had to sign?
[ The attendant, looking between them, nods. ]
Sure. We can deal with that in the office when you're ready.
[ D'Artagnan moves over, stepping around the puppies and getting his hand to Athos' shoulder. ]
Difficult though it may be, do you think you can pick just one?
no subject
I'm sure I'll be able to tear myself away.
[ So dry, such a lie. Can he secretly volunteer here all day, every day. ]
Have you any thoughts?
no subject
Though, the one that ran straight for Athos is endearing. He reaches over his friend's shoulder to scratch its ears. ]
You said you wanted a guard dog. This one seems unafraid.
I'm sure we could train him.
no subject
( Of course the puppy still tries to attack his shoes. ) ] Well then, let's go and finish this paperwork. The sooner we do, the sooner we may take our new friends home to get them accustomed to the farm.
