Is she a good cook?

[ Now she's picturing a very stereotypical housewife. ]

[puppydoctor]

[Whoever she's visualizing, it probably isn't too far off from Mama O'Malley.]

She raised three boys - it didn't matter so much that it was good, just that there was a lot of it. But yeah, I thought she was the best in the world. Used to tell her she should have her own restaurant.

[coppelganger]

That's so cute.

[ She's a bit jealous, actually. ]

[He smiles at her approval, and at the memory]

She used to get so worried that I wasn't eating, since none of us in Mer's house could really cook. There were weeks we ate, like, literally nothing but muffins. She would have thrown a fit.

[coppelganger]

Yeah, that's not good. I had a few times like that too.

[puppydoctor]

It's how you know you're an adult. One day you find yourself having Froot Loops and beer for dinner at 2:00 AM, and that's it. Childhood's gone.

[coppelganger]

I guess that's the universal experience.

[puppydoctor]

Yeah, I guess so.

[He smiles at her, wide and warm.]

... Favorite time of year?

[coppelganger]

Autumn, before it gets too cold. What about you?

[puppydoctor]

Summer. That's when we get basically all out sun for the year.

[coppelganger]

I bet you'll change that answer once you've spent a full summer down here.

[ She only got here-here in the middle of June, but she spent a long time in South Carolina with Vic the Dick, scamming people and selling drugs on the boardwalk. ]

[puppydoctor]

Oh man, yeah, I'm not looking forward to that. Only hot place I've ever been is Vegas, and that was for three days.

[coppelganger]

Besides, Vegas is a dry heat. Humidity's the killer.

[ And then she can't help but crack a smile, because Jesus, they're sitting here discussing the weather like some old married couple. ]

Cats or dogs?

[puppydoctor]

[He actually has to think about this one for a moment.]

Cats, I think. God, Mer used to have a dog and he drove me crazy. I used to get cornered in the bathroom with my breakfast, every morning. They're just too high energy for me.

[coppelganger]

[ Sounds like hell on earth to her, too. ]

I like cats. They're independent. They need less.

[puppydoctor]

[He gives a little laugh.]

Maybe that's why I don't get along with them. They're my opposite.

[coppelganger]

So you like cats, but they don't like you.

[puppydoctor]

Animals in general, I think. They know when people are uncomfortable around them. Or maybe they can all sense my cold-blooded turkey murder.

[coppelganger]

Ooh, yeah, I bet.

[ She takes a bite of her dinner. ]

I never had pets or anything. I know Kira would love it, but...

[ Things have been way too unstable for pets. First Sarah running out all the time, now all this shit with DYAD coming after them. ]

[puppydoctor]

I had a dog once as a kid, but... I don't remember him, I was pretty young.

[A lie, but he doesn't really want to talk about his dead dog, in addition to his dead dad and his dead best friend.]

[coppelganger]

[ He sure knows a lot of dead people. ]

Yeah? I always wanted one, but Mrs. S said it's like taking care of a baby that never grows up.

[puppydoctor]

[He's a magnet. You'd better get away from him.]

That sounds about right. Except I know a lot more about babies than dogs, even if I haven't had one. I mean... fathered one. That I know of.

[coppelganger]

[ She laughs, although underneath she's feeling pretty awkward, since she purposefully didn't tell her kid's father about her for... oh, eight years. ]

How do you know so much about babies, then?

[puppydoctor]

I'm pretty good with them. Delivered a couple, actually, but they just like me for some reason.
