While technically Abigail is unsure of how old she is -- there are too many missing months between Baltimore and Heropa and more between Heropa and Heropa -- nineteen is close enough and probably makes up for those missing months. Maybe.

But like Jeff said, it's foolproof.

She huffs and puffs about no party, but then Will made that face and she begrudgingly gave in so long as it was just a cook out and there were no streamers or balloons. Which is why the backyard is decked out with fairy lights and Chinese lanterns and a piñata in the shape of a llama, which she is not complaining about, and another in the shape of a bumblebee, which she vaguely protests because bees are good!

Cheeseburgers and hot dogs and chicken and other assorted barbecued meats are on the grill, there are bowls of macaroni salad, potato salad, pasta salad, regular salad, and a truly ridiculous amount of grilled veggies on the table out back. There are coolers full of soda and probably beer, tbh. The other alcohol is inside so the youths won't get it, presumably. At least that's what they're going with. Somewhere in the kitchen is a cake with candles.

Also there are dogs. And raccoons, both adult and funsize. And an impossibly fluffy cat who thinks she's a raccoon by now. But that seems to be the norm at the Ludgate-Graham home.

[ Though it might be impossible for anyone to tell, her smile is quite genuine when April makes herself known. She might not immediately reach for a hug like she would others, but that doesn't mean she can't sneak one in at some point in the night once April is good and drunk...or stoned, by the smell of something.

Tongue-in-cheek, Mary looks around to see if anyone's eavesdropping, since she wouldn't want April to ruin the surprise of those bitching pinatas. Just in case, she'll respond in Spanish. No trouble, and it's just more fun. She doesn't often get the opportunity to flex her linguistic skills around people. ]

Yeah? Now you have my attention. I assume it's not filled with little bottles of tequila?

[ That gets a hard blink- people usually avoid talking to her in spanish after hearing April's sarcastic comments on how she is to be referred to in the formal 'usted.' But cool, Mary. It won't get you the info you seek, but it does get a surprised look from April, and isn't that just as good? ]

I can't break the sacred trust of the pinata. You've got to beat it out of them.

[ That gets a laugh out of her. She wouldn't be against giving a beating, but there are so many other eligible contenders that she'd rather stick to the background. ]

Then I volunteer John on my behalf. The longer he smacks at it, the more like it is to bust open and shower us with...whatever's in there.

[ And it might help him vent in the guise of getting to act childish, when it's completely permissible. What a good thing. ]

[ Thank goodness for years of deadpan practice. Anyone listening to the rapid fire spanish would never know. But she's smiling on the inside. ]
