my mom never lifted a car for ME before
WHO: Manabu, Kanaya
WHERE: Nonah, a less-developed residential
WHEN: A convenient time this week
WHAT: Kanaya shows off her maternal feats of strength that aren't actually maternal at all because who is even this guy who decided to get up and crushed by a car
WARNINGS: manabu gets hit by a car so there's some ick
H-hey...
[Manabu's mouth twitches, pulling a one-sided grin. he's trying to look reassuring, but he can't do much about wiping blood off his face when one hand is pinned and the other's got fingers stuck into the crack of a partly-open moonroof, captive to tinier ones curled around them from the inside.]
It's alright. You'll. Get out soon. [he tries writhing again, but to little avail but more pain. healing seems to be a thing he can definitely do (otherwise he'd be deader than dead by now), but his back can't exactly fuse with the steel guardrail that's dug into it from the force of impact. no matter how many times he's tried to move, he can't get himself up off of there; the car that rolled off the other side of the road and pinned him is way too heavy.
he's gotten better about keeping his head up, though, which helps keep him from looking too horrific. he'd be less self-conscious had he not had a five-year old whimpering in the back seat of that car. five-and-a-half, actually. she told him that – twice, he thinks. maybe she'll tell him again soon, and that's fine. anything to keep her from starting to really freak out about being sideways and stuck in the carseat while her mom lay unconscious at the wheel up front.
Manabu grunts, now trying to move his legs as opposed to his back, but that's an even more lost cause. it looks almost silly – like he had been sitting up like that just before all this, instead of getting thrown all that way. it's hard to think about the exact details up to now, or how long it's been, but he can worry about it later.]
Someone'll be here soon. Yeah? [...uh-huh.] Yeah. You might...miss your sister's softball practice, but. It's okay.
[if he could find his communicator, that'd really help move things along. but this isn't exactly an unpopulated area; calls have no doubt gone out. it's just a matter of waiting.
yeah.

she was about halfway finished reeling a thread in to heropa when she hears the crash, wheels skidding and leaving the road, punctuated with a crunch. she doesn't hesitate, letting the coiled thread wind it's way off her arm as she breaks into a sprint.
if her face had much color to begin with, it would have drained to see manabu pinned behind the car. for a moment, she thinks that she should call for help, but the thought dissolves quickly. she's a trained emt, and even if she doesn't have even have of her powers, she has enough to do something.
she is the help.
leaping up to on the guardrail, she crouches down to put a careful hand on his shoulder, leaning over to glance through the windows to take note of the car's passengers before focusing on him. ]
Are you conscious? I need you to stay awake for me, alright?
no subject
still, he's got his brow all pinched trying to think hard on that and refocus on what's going on now. that she's a familiar voice and face is just going to add into the mix here.]
Mm, it's– [there's some of that recognition. huh.] Fine. I'm fine. In here, though– [his thumb drums on the window where his other fingers are captive.] Two in there. See?
no subject
If I can move the car, do you think you'll be able to slide out?
[ it will have to be delicate. she doesn't want to risk causing the passengers any further injury by jostling the car, so it will have to keep its current orientation. she could get them out first, maybe, but... he is fucking pinned between the car and the guardrail. patients have to be prioritized by severity. ]

well, because it's supposed to be a chainsaw by now. but an onlooker may not realize that. ]
Shit.
[ the lipstick disappears again, seemingly into thin air, and she turns her attention to the car instead. she needs to give him enough space without tipping it over, and this is probably not the place to do that from. if she pushes too hard, it will just topple back over. ]
Hold on, just for a moment. I'm only going around to the other side.
[ and she moves back along the guardrail and crosses to the chassis, hoping to get a feel for the weight. she hasn't really tested the limits of what her diminished nullification will allow her to do, but a trial by fire is sometimes all you have. picking it up over her head is probably out, but maybe she can lean it against her back, at least. ]
I'm going to pull it away, alright? As soon you have room to move, let me know.
[ and she takes a deep breath, bracing her legs, then pulls he chassis towards her, fighting against gravity as she tries to get the weight away from him. the strain is immense, but with a concerted effort, she manages to pull it over until it rests against her arms, forcing her to hunch to fit her height under the car. she isn't sure how long she can keep it like this. ]
no subject
wow. that was fast. it's already moving. Manabu's surprised. surprised that he's only just noticing how terribly uncomfortable that was; his legs hurt anew, and his stomach feels like it's just been loosed out of a vice.
he starts to bend – cries out when his back and arm finally peel free of steel – and reaches forward to grab his legs and yank them out of the shadow of the car that's...that's still just hovering...
from the angle he's leaned forward, he can see the absence of a tow. just Kanaya.]
Wha...?!
no subject
laying the car back down may be more tricky. she'd set it back on its wheels, but might only end up crushed beneath it for her trouble. she needs to be careful how she does this from here. maybe having someone else would have helped, but it's too late for that now. ]
Just-- Get free! To the other side of the rail.
[ too busy lifting, can't really talk now. ]
no subject
he can duck under what's still standing of the rail and crawl out of the way, using the one good arm and elbow of the other to push the rest of the way. the ditch and gravity helps with the rest––]
Uff! Cl-clear!
no subject
or can she?
the weight is on her back, braced by her legs. like this, there isn't much for her arms to do. that frees her to pull the threads she needs, twisting them around until a portal opens up in front of her. she winds the threads around her wrists and reaches her hands out, then grits her teeth, extending her legs to push it back up. it's slow, careful work, but eventually, she feels thee roof in her hands, just enough to push against herself to ease it back onto its side. before long, the weight shifts from her back to her hands, and the job's done.
her shoulders hunch as her arms go slack, pulling the threads so they snap back into place, closing the portal. it's funny, having to catch your breath when you don't actually need to breathe. ]
no subject
Are–– [ow. he stops trying to turn himself.] Are they alright?
no subject
Hello, little one. Don't be afraid, I'm here to help you. You and your mother.
[ placing her feet on the ceiling, she slides down to the bottom, offering the girl a glowing hand, smudged from the grime on the chassis, palms still raw from the stress, healing slower than they normally would. as soon as it's accepted, she carefully scoops her into her arms, emerging again through the open door. ]
no subject
he can sit up after a spell, able to look out under the guard rail. good timing in that he can wave a little when the kid starts to inquire where he went.
huff. his head sags after that, now staring at his legs and wondering if this healing thing is as fast with bones, because then he can up and help out...]
no subject
[ the girl's small arms cling around her neck, and she keeps a firm hold herself and she steps down to the guardrail, causing the door to fall into gravity, with that slight shift of weight, slamming shut. kanaya hops down next to manabu, laying the girl down next to him, gently. ]
Just hold his hand, darling. He'll look after you. [ she gives him a look that's almost pleading. fucking kids, fucking inborn overwhelming and unfulfilled maternal instincts. ] Just for a moment.
I'll be right back.
[ and she goes off again, climbing up and pulling the passenger door not just open, but bent so far down it might as well fall off. she drops in upside-down, giving herself a chance to examine the mother before she moves her. if there's any serious injuries, she'll need to know. there's a high risk of concussion already.
breathing is shallow, but at least pulse is steady. much better than the last patient she had. ]
no subject
[he laughs, but just once because ow, and refocuses his attention on the girl. hopefully looking cheerful despite blood spatters and slowly-disappearing lacerations is less traumatic than being off-focus and too wrapped up in his want to help Kanaya (because that is something he definitely has to fight trying to do).]
You at least get to tell your big sis about how you got saved by a– auh, superhero.
no subject
she turns around, landing feet-first on the window, kneeling down to take the woman in her arms, releasing her seatbelt. getting out this way will be too tricky, so she pulls open a portal, dropping down next to manabu and the woman's daughter.
as she tries to rouse the mother, she looks at him with some surprise. ]
You got better surprisingly quick.
no subject
[he breathes out once the little girl forgets him to scoot over to her mother, letting himself wince as he feels a dreadful shifting in his leg start up.]
How– how is she–?
no subject
Please, lie still. You've been in an accident, but you and your daughter are both safe now. I need you to tell me where it hurts.
[ groggily, the mother indicates her left leg, and kanaya tears open the pants, examining the bruising. the skin isn't broken, and the gentle tests she makes with her fingers don't seem to point toward a clean break. still, something to handle delicately. ]
Likely concussion, possible fracture in the fibula. She'll need a real doctor to tell her for certain.
[ she looks behind her, giving the girl a smile--"Just hold your mother's hand for me, alright? You're both doing fine, everything's going to be okay."--and notes her purse about five feet from manabu.
good, no one stole it. that would be annoying. ]
Are you in good enough shape to call 911 for me?
no subject
spoken while exhaling:] No prob...lem...ghaahh... [huff. right. he finds he can move that leg and scoot himself to sit up properly, relieving one of his hands to send it fishing around his pockets for his communicator. jeez, he hopes it didn't get crushed.]
Aoh, here... [whew. the tech is built better than the human body.] Hold on.
[he'll dial this up and try not to sound too military about it. try.]
no subject
For fuck's sake, just tell me no if the answer's no!
[ he was moving his leg, so that's where she checks first. but...she has a bit of trouble finding the break. it must be broken if he's wailing that loudly. ...unless it only was broken, she's no stranger to regeneration. ]
Where's the pain coming from?
no subject
but that's so brief a thing.] No, it's fine, it– [he blinks at what she's doing before the voice on the communicator tries another grab for his attention. he startles with a little sound before relaying the problem, leaning back and squinting over his shoulder in search of landmarks or signs to give. he settles for "there's a ditch and also a car on its backside." it's probably the only one, right?
he lets the communicator drop into the dirt with a huff, turning his head back toward Kanaya, his mouth twitching.] S-sorry. I was just caught off-guard, that's all. It's fine– [he cuts himself off, eyebrows lifting.] ...Which is weird.
[it was definitely hurting a helluva lot more minutes ago. and it's not numb, he can feel his toes and such.
healing ability, huh. so that's definitely a thing. he's still not used to it.]
no subject
I take it, then, that you've yet to speak to the Captain. Still, that's convenient to have.
[ and he doesn't even need to drink blood to make it work. ]
no subject
A– oh, anyway. They're...on their way, they said. I might not've given the best directions, but... [really, how many upside-down cars can there be.]
no subject
[ she's only recently gotten hers back, so it's a fact she's very conscious of, that powers can't be taken for granted. but when you have them and need them, you better appreciate them.
she rises to her feet, looking out to the road and wondering if she should be blinking a signal. traffic has congested around the crash, as many people seem to be avoiding the right lane, but no one's put up any kind of block just yet.
they're lucky that at least it wasn't dark. ]
no subject
I dunno, that still hurt... [shut up, Manabu; it'd hurt more if it stayed broken and useless. he tests out his dinged-up arm, bending it slowly and tilting it at the wrist. he flinches a little at a pop, but after that it's surprisingly limber.
huh. he smiles a little.] But I'll be able to do more than just sit around here, if that's the case– ow. [he has to stop when he gets to a knee.] Hang on.
no subject
she turns back, giving him her hand. ]
Here, let me help.
Of course it's still going to hurt. We can be injured, and pain is an intrinsic part of that. But it doesn't stay, it doesn't leave scars.
Eventually you'll learn to ignore the pain, to recognize it as a temporary reminder of damage that doesn't ultimately matter.

[ if she had any real talent, she isn't the only one she'd be able to heal. that's what she was always supposed to be, the role paradox space assigned to her. what a poor choice paradox space made.
she smiles down at the girl, as her mother runs a hand through her hair. ]
It's unfortunate, really, that such things aren't more widespread.
no subject
man. whenever he gets back...would she even believe he got rescued by a vampire? it'd be hard for him to believe it if he weren't here, having to take a lot on people's word instead of what face-value dictates.
absently, and quiet:] Huh... [hey Manabu did you know your life is kind of weird?
he'd marvel about it more, but sirens whining in the distance gets his attention and perks him right up, smiling.] Ah– that's help, isn't it? That's lucky, huh? [his smile-turned-grin moving from person to person:] It's not going to be that long after all.
[he's hit with a thought that straightens him up; he scratches at his chin.] Aa...I wonder what their protocol is. Maybe if I took care of something else here beforehand, that'd help them out. [and get him a little noticed by the authorities – something he really wants.
he drops his fist into his open palm when he realizes it.] Oh! Sure! [to the woman staring at him with one of those you-are-weird-but-i-am-humoring-you-for-reasons looks:] I can go get your identification papers out of the vehicle! [from her to Kanaya:] People do that here, right?
no subject
Maybe let's not jump right into the upturned car! You have to be incredibly careful with the weight distribution, or it might fall over with you in it, and then we'll be going through this all over again. No one wants that.
[ she's very tempted to rub her temples, but her hands are too dirty for that, so she just rubs them together instead. ]
Listen, you were just as much a victim of this crash as they were, even if you've already healed. I'm sure that process is bound to have numerous chemical effects, so you're probably suffering from a surplus of adrenaline at the moment.
Just hang tight, it will settle soon enough.
[ she steps up on the guardrail and let's her glow blink with a soft, steady pulse. just enough to catch attention, but not so much as to risk anyone's epilepsy. bioluminescence is a big responsibility sometimes. she looks back at manabu earnestly. ]
When they get here, I want you to go with them, alright? Just to ensure that everything's where it should be, and that these two will be in good hands. Do you understand?
no subject
but her request is what gets him to stands still and turn back, frowning.]
Eh? And leave you to reporting out to the police on your own? [that's kind of rude.]
no subject
not that she has either, she generally tries to avoid cars. ]
Oh, they'll certainly still take your statement, likely before taking you to the hospital. You'll have plenty more to tell them than I might, anyway.
no subject
Mm...I should at least stay to help you out with that part, don't you think? Since my injuries are practically gone...
no subject
[ she'll probably be talking more to the emts than the police, honestly. at least them she'll know what to tell. ]
They'll know how to take care of it, this sort of thing is their job. Just, once that's all sorted, go to the hospital. That's all I'm asking.
no subject
he smiles weakly.] Mm. No problem.
no subject
You'll do just fine, soldier. The worst is behind us.
[ "for today, at least," she does not add. it's what she's thinking, but that's not something to tell him at a time like this.
the klaxons cut off as the vehicles pull up, and kanaya pulls her glow in to match. the work is never done, and it's time for her to start the next phase. she gives him a nod as she hops off the guardrail to direct the emts. ]
