[ Kaneki likes to stay at the library reading for hours. He already has so many books back home, but being in a place surrounded by books, the incomprehensible whispers of others who are there in the background, the smell of books in a large space, it's something that he strangely enjoys. He was finishing "The Collector", when he decided to take a break.
He grabs the book and walks to the libraries lobby where a coffee machine waits for him. Per usual, the coffee is bland, but that's fine; he decides to add something to it: a small dark sugar-like cube. At least it looks like sugar. After, he sits down on a nearby table, stirring his coffee and also grabs for two pills, popping one into his mouth, while he re-reads the cover of the book.
"Withdrawn, uneducated and unloved, Frederick collects butterflies and takes photographs. He is obsessed with a beautiful stranger, the art student Miranda. When he wins the pools he buys a remote Sussex house and calmly abducts Miranda, believing she will grow to love him in time. Alone and desperate, Miranda must struggle to overcome her own prejudices and contempt if she is understand her captor, and so gain her freedom."
He is enjoying it quite a lot. ]

That's the reason for his slightly dampened spirits today, for the lack of bounce to his step, and the absence of the mile-wide smile typical of him...or it is, until he sees Kaneki.
And then he's all smiles. Or all smirk if you'd rather. The other teen doesn't appear to have noticed him yet, so Josuke is quiet as he approaches and, from behind, plants a hand suddenly on Ken's shoulder.]
Hey! [If he scared you, Ken, that's what you get for getting so absorbed in a book! ...what are you even reading, anyway?] Didn't think I'd run into you here!

[ he smiles back nonetheless, pulling his hand away from the coffee for a second before something bad happened - like knocking it over ]
A-ah- I'm just catching up with the new releases... I'm usually around. [ he loves the library ok ] How are you today?

[Lies, fucking lies! All of it lies! ...Well, he could be worse. He's really not too badly off, the whole theft thing aside, so maybe it's not quite a lie so much as it's...just sparing Kaneki the weh.
Anyway, he grins as he takes a seat opposite the other teen, dropping his book bag onto the table.]
New release, huh? What's it about?
[Not that he reads a whole lot, but shhh. He's taking an active interest in his friend's hobbies! That's allowed!]

It's about a withdrawn man called Frederick who becomes obsessed with Miranda, an art student. So much he eventually kidnaps her in hopes she will come to love him. It starts with Frederick's point of view, and then from Miranda's to eventually end with Frederick's again. So you get to see the point of view of all interested parts, allowing you to see differences between each and how each affects you.
it's beautifully written, and also really scary in many ways. [ he loves it ]

[He's got a friend back home who was kidnapped by a girl who was obsessed with him. That friend fell for the girl, too...in the end, anyway. Everything leading up to that, though? A total nightmare! Josuke's...not really sure he gets it. Seems kind of out there and unhealthy.]
So, what...does that Miranda chick come to like Fred?
[Please tell him no. Please tell him that not all girls are totally batshit insane when it comes to romance.]

[Hm. Kinda thirsty. Been a long day. Maybe Kaneki wouldn't mind...]

[ kaneki hums for a moment. ] it's not really the psychology of it, but rather... how the author approaches it. The way they write it and the way they show us - the reader - their approach in different angels. For example, in this book you have two different angels, from the kidnapper and the kidnapped, and thus you can see the differences and similarities, as the author approaches both.
[ and this is ken, nerding about books ]

[Not his kind of thing, not because he can't do it or hasn't done it, but because he'd really rather just...not delve into the mindset of people like that. Sure, he can connect the dots, figure out what they're thinking if he concentrates hard enough, but who wants to spend that long in like...a killer's brain? That's depressing. And talk about being hard to empathize with.
He sighs a little.]
...man, I didn't know you were a college kid, though.
[Stares at. Ken's really unassuming, okay!]
You studying lit here, too?
[And, once Kaneki sets down that coffee, Josuke reaches for it because man, all this talk's making him thirsty, plus he hasn't had a drink since lunch!]

[Not that he's really...waiting for a yes as he tilts the cup back aaannnddd...nice big mouthful. of. whatthefuckisthiseven. shit water? the face he makes as he debates whether or not to swallow.]

The comment about being a "college kid" causes him to smile and nod ] A freshman. And I'm trying to get into the local University here, but I arrived too late to start the new school year; the process is slow because of that. [ and he will be canon updated before that too.
And suddenly he jerks as he sees Josuke reaching for the coffee and the most horrified expression comes to his face ] Josuke-SAN, don-
[ too late. He watches him take a sip of something he should never take a sip of. Oh GOD. No. No no no!!! ] That has my suppressants in it! [ and blood. it has blood ]

Choking a little as he sets down the beverage and covers his mouth with his hand.]
I don't drink much coffee...
[Cough cough blegh nothing even to chase that flavor with. Gross.]
...but I'm pretty sure it shouldn't taste like that. Is that from your medicine?
[More dramatic noise and face making! ...why are you friends with this loser, Kaneki.]
Who even mixes medicine and caffeine! Isn't that like, bad or something?

Yeah, back home. After arriving here I talked to a doctor and they weren't sure what to do, since I'm an imPort and have the nanites...
I decided it was better to keep on suppressants, so my body wouldn't reject the kidney. [ yeah, but chances are, it wouldn't make a difference because of his ghoul physiology.

[And Josuke would know! He's had flesh picked off his eyelids before, not to mention having nearly been stabbed through with a pen. Some people really like targeting eyes in fights! Talk about a pain in it the ass.
