Heropa High - closed to Annie

[Sai got several answers on what to expect out of high school after his first post on the network, but one thing people didn't tell him was that he wasn't allowed to bring weapons to school. Then again, most people probably aren't from societies in which the only formal education their children receive is on how to be a ninja.

So when he arrives on campus at Heropa High, his strange attire and headband, along with the sword sheathed on his back, draw a fair number of stares and whispers. That could've been all, but as fate would have it, an upperclassman crosses his path. He's big and bulky, possibly a football player, and the way he holds himself is cocky and arrogant. Definitely near the top of the high school social ladder, this one.

What a dweeb! he jeers, and he thinks to show the new imPort kid his place by giving him a wedgie. But the senior's hand has barely grazed his waist when he whirls around, sword reflexively drawn and held to the soft, vulnerable flesh of the older boy's throat.

Wh-what the fuck?! Let me go, you fucking psycho!

The scene is starting to draw spectators now, and it's more than just students. A teacher witnesses them and strolls on up, both a little horrified and attempting to appear authoritative nonetheless.

Hey! Put that down right now or I'll call the police!!

A second or so passes in tense silence, before Sai seems to recognize the woman as an apparent authority figure here, and duly lowers his weapon.

To the principal's office, now.

Someone might want to tell him where that is.]

i. Heropa High - open

[After the morning's debacle, Sai's tantō is sitting in the principal's office, waiting to be collected at the end of the day. He goes to his classes as normal after that, and some of the teachers get an odd, nervous look on their face when he takes his seat.

By lunch, no shortage of rumors are circulating about the new kid; many of them are overblown and ridiculous, the way teenage rumors often are. Some suspect he's actually a robot, what with his blank expressions and speech largely lacking in much inflection. Others say he must be some kind of demon, and suggest you should look away when he smiles, because that's how he sucks out your soul. More mundane rumors run the gamut from secret agent to serial killer, though shockingly few actually guess ninja. Maybe it's the belly shirt.

Between classes, he can be found in various places, from roofs to benches drawing or people-watching or drawing while people-watching. Should one care to approach, they will find him to be polite and soft-spoken, yet blunt in the manner of someone who has no concept of social norms. He'll smile at anyone who chooses to speak with him, though a practiced eye may notice that the smiles are all far too polished.]

ii. Government housing, residence #10

[Sai has never had housemates--at least, not since he was taken in by Root, and he doesn't remember much before that point in his life. Nonetheless, he's very unobtrusive as a presence in the residence; his scrolls and ink are all neatly kept within his backpack which he keeps in his room, he goes in and out quietly enough so as not to be noticeable. He's curious about these people he now lives with, but he's still learning about conversation, and idle smalltalk isn't something he's good at yet. So he generally doesn't speak unless spoken to--and then, of course, he smiles. Thing is, they're a little less fake every time he puts one on for his housemates. It's a little exciting, having people around all the time, if frightening as well. He's never had so much freedom before; without Naruto or Sakura or Yamato around, he has no idea what to do with it all.]

iii. Public library - open

[As he'd said to Freddie, information is a valuable resource. And there was nowhere better to go for information about his current surroundings than the library. He can often be found seated at one of the tables, nose deep in a book on just about any subject he can get his hands on. Eventually, however, he becomes curious about the glowing boxes he often sees people sitting in front of, and decides to investigate for himself.

...He doesn't get very far, though. His communicator reveals the initial screen to say three different words: log-in, username, and password. He has a general idea what a password might entail, but the rest is meaningless. He'll probably just keep staring at the screen in mild consternation until someone helps him out or he loses interest and decides to go back to the books instead.]

iv. Heropa Art Gallery - open

[The employees at the Heropa Art Gallery have already realized in the first couple days that their new imPort intern is a little weird. Thus, they generally keep him away from most of the work that actually involves interacting with patrons and have him run errands instead: fetching things, moving things, doing inventory, etc. But today, they're already shorthanded and the woman who usually runs the information desk out front called out sick at the last moment.

So it's your lucky day, art-lover. You get to deal with this dude instead of someone who's accustomed to ordinary social interaction. Have fun.]

[ he's an idiot.

she tends to think this often when faced with the newest people here, but it's such a lack of insight into the situation, to rely on aggressive habits from home, that idiot is the first thought crossing Annie's mind once the situation appears to be handled. she rests her hand on her messenger bag, repressing an urge to frown.

she knows that face. Sai. new imPort, on the network recently. had a lot of non-explanations about shinobi's that really only pointed her toward believing a different kind of soldier upbringing, made fact with his present predicament.

a really lousy sort of soldier, if he's attacking unarmed civilians. not soldier, then. maybe mercenary?

Annie falls in step when he hits the hallways, brushing her hair back off her face to be collected behind an ear. she faces forward when she speaks, looking down the hall and watching people disappear into restrooms, classrooms, beyond double doors. the buzz of a school day here in Heropa High.
]

The Principal's office is on the first floor, down that hall. By the way... just what the hell do you think you're doing?

[ she finally glances his way, expression flat, not emoting much of anything. yep. still thinking dangerous idiot, and not making any sudden movements that would generate a reaction out of her to accidentally push him over the edge into another ill-fated confrontation on school grounds. ]

They're civilians. Even if they were assassins, they'd be more efficient than that idiot.

[ She doesn't pretend she's not from a world where infiltrating spies, assassins, and executions squads won't sneak right up on you and slit your neck, but at the same time, acting on those instincts here is dangerous. For all of them.

Annie gestures over toward the left hand side of the hall.
]

If you act like that here, there's going to be consequences.
lyingheart: anonsanta, let me know who to credit! (say | i still think of you)

[personal profile] lyingheart 2014-11-15 04:26 am (UTC)(link)
[ She's not sure, but he's missing the point. ]

It's against any regulations to have weapons on campus, but beyond that, do you expect to use your training against any and all civilians you come across? If you're decently trained, you can get out of that situation without attempting to use lethal force. Are you? Is hand to hand combat part of a shinobi training regimen?

[personal profile] lyingheart 2014-11-15 06:40 am (UTC)(link)
Then rely on those techniques, and use them sparingly. You shouldn't attack civilians out of hand. They're not prepared to handle your training, and you should know the difference between someone aiming to kill and someone trying to intimidate.

[ Really, it feels different in the end. ]

[ Civilians are stupid ,Sai. People who don't know better than to sneak up on others haven't dealt with honed instincts at all. Once at the office, Annie indicates for him to knock - no other way to make himself known, and the man who served as secretary and administrative assistance to the principal was inside the main office, not in a window outside. Apparently it was an odd set-up for a school, but the main office was halfway down the same hall, and didn't have a back connection to the principal's. ]

One of the new imPorts was pulled into an argument with one of the students here. Can we lock weapons in the office until this afternoon, for guardian pick-up?

[ ... Was he emancipated, or did he have a guardian? Annie legitimately has no idea. Still, seems like... one way to get through this moment. The admin assistant opens the door with a sigh, looking from Annie to Sai, shaking his head and inviting them in. ]

1!

[Jayden has ducked outside in between classes to catch a smoke. Not that kind of smoke; the last thing he needs is to be caught at school high and get kicked from the soccer team. But a cigarette here and there can't hurt anyone, right? it's not like they're illegal.

So here he is, taking a puff, when he looks over and there's the weird new kid who apparently brought a weapon to school or something. Awesome. To Jayden's credit, he doesn't do a double-take or anything like that. But he does nod in Sai's direction, the universal adolescent boy form of greeting.
]

Hey, I heard you got arrested. Guess people are full of shit.

[personal profile] immigrantpunk 2014-11-19 04:55 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's for the best. No one wants any more of that Columbine shit, so people have gotten touchy.

[It occurs to him too late that judging by the kid's attire, he's probably not familiar either with something as contemporary as Columbine. ...If Columbine even happened in this world at all. He takes a deep drag on his cigarette, looking down.]

[personal profile] immigrantpunk 2014-11-21 09:03 pm (UTC)(link)
[Oh, right. Cultural context.]

Yeah, back where I'm from, these kids came to school with guns and killed a bunch of their classmates just for the fun of it, or something fucked up like that. Started a trend.

[He takes another drag on his cigarette.]

I don't know if that even happened here, sorry. Didn't mean to mix you up.

[Since you are obviously not from... anywhere near here.]

[personal profile] immigrantpunk 2014-12-07 07:52 pm (UTC)(link)
[It's not so much Sai's words as the obviously fake smile that creeps Jayden out. He's not a fan of false smilers, even though it's a big American politeness thing. But this kid isn't even American. Maybe he's just crazy.]

Right.

[Maybe he shouldn't be giving this guy any ideas.]

[personal profile] immigrantpunk 2014-12-20 04:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Nope. You want a smoke?

[If he is a crazy psycho, best to make friends with him now. Maybe he'll spare Jayden when the massacre comes.]
