February 2021 Mod Event: GONE... to the 80s! Part II
WHERE: Everywhere!
WHEN: February 1, 2021/1986 & onward
WHAT: GONE... to the 80s! Part II (Part I)
WARNINGS: The dire consequences of time travel...
to the 80s!
Ever since imPorts began to disappear on January 5th, things have gotten... weird. Random doors continue to open portals to 1986: the year imPorted heroes first began Arriving from other worlds.
The richly woven tapestry of history seems to be unravelling. Perhaps it's time our intrepid heroes try their hand at a little restorative needlework?
THE FIRST ARRIVAL
Security has never been higher at the Cape Canaveral military base. Everyone's been on edge since the appearance of an unidentified object at the very center of the compound. Scientists have been running tests for nearly a month now and they're no closer to solving the mystery of it. Some believe the object may be Soviet in origin. Others suspect it's extraterrestrial. This is all speculation, really, because no one's been able to approach the damn thing and live to tell the tale.
Until now.
Around noon on February 1st, the object comes to life. The scaffolding that had been hastily constructed to conceal it goes flying suddenly in every direction, the debris of a silent explosion. Though the machine is now in full sight of everyone on the base, it's impossible to comprehend. Pieces of it seem to be folding, collapsing, reconstructing, whirring around in ways that defy physics. The way the light bends off the metal makes it look like it's constantly shifting colors. The part of it that looks like a cracked egg reveals a core that's too bright to look at.
Out of this, the very first imPort arrives. He's the only one so far who's ever been untouched by the object's radiation field, and once he's out of the danger zone, officials in hazmat suits rush up to greet him. There are so many tests to be run, so many questions to be asked.
The handful of other imPorts who have remained on the base, either to spy or to offer consultation, are encouraged to come forth and conduct their own interviews with the young stranger.
It's possible that others may arrive, too. Anyone who accidentally slips into 1986 while traveling via gate in 2021 might also arrive at the heart of this object. These are the imPorts history will remember as the very first Arrivals to step out of the Porter.
Of course, there's none of the usual pomp and ceremony waiting to greet them. Government officials are panicking and scrambling, and while the imPorts aren't being met with hostility, they're certainly being handled with a degree of fear and suspicion. A medical tent serves as their home for now, as scientists plea for them to cooperate with physical examinations. They'd really like to make sure their guests aren't slowly dying of radiation poisoning.
35th ANNIVERSARY
February 1st is a big day in Heropa's history. 35 years ago today, imPorts arrived at Cape Canaveral and made their home in a nearby town that would have otherwise vanished into obscurity. Now, it's among the most thriving tourist locations in the country! The town owes it all to imPorts, and while the 1st of every month is celebrated with an Arrival Ceremony, this one is particularly special. Locals have organized an entire parade in the imPorts' honor, and thousands of fans have flocked to the streets to view it.
The parade begins on Main Street at the heart of Heropa and marches all the way to Cape Canaveral. It's an extravagant affair, with elaborate floats and enormous balloons bearing the likenesses of imPorts old and new. At the very head of the parade is a cheerily inflatable approximation of Dave Strider, famously the first imPort to ever step out of the Porter, followed shortly by a line of other historic heroes: Dynamight, Ochako Uraraka, and any other time travelers who came forward in 1986, now recognized for ushering in the heroic age by averting disaster at this very same base! Other displays are dedicated to more recent heroes (at least… the ones the populace can remember…) and imPorts have been encouraged to ride along and soak in the adoration of the crowd. This is for you!
The annual parade typically ends right outside the Porter building, where the greets the first arrivals of the year after the Porter's winter sleep. Unfortunately, this ordinarily triumphant affair doesn't play out as planned.
The music goes quiet, the crowd hushes, and everyone waits with bated breath for the Porter to come to life. When the time comes and goes, all remains silent within the Porter building. Military personnel look to each other in concern while the crowd murmurs in confusion. Finally, a few men in black suits reach out to the imPorts present for the parade, imploring them to enter the building to investigate what's going on. It's potentially fatal for natives to get that close to the Porter, after all.
The imPorts who decide to help will enter the Porter containment area to find the machine sputtering, metal gears groaning like a dying beast. A light flashes only briefly as Alain Prase comes stumbling out of the portal. The machine goes completely dark.
Is it… dead?
Before the imPorts can begin their investigation, their comms crackle to life, relaying a distant and distorted message over the network — not just to the imPorts present on-site, but to others on the 2021 side. The further they are from the Porter, the weaker and more indecipherable the signal gets. Those in the Porter building itself, however, might catch enough of the warning to understand what needs to be done.
