Their world had twisted quite a few; one of his mistakes had been in not acquiring the loyalty of the man who was as clever as him. Actually, Nie Huaisang might be more clever. He had lived.

"What I did was evil. Unforgivable. Do you see me running or denying it?"

"What do you mean?"

As far as he was concerned, Meng Yao was the cause of so much grief. There were other things he couldn't forgive Wei Wuxian for but he knew that Wei Wuxian had never threatened his nephew's life so far.

"Do you intend to do anything to atone?"

Not that he would believe any effort of Meng Yao's would be genuine.

"I don't know, I don't know..." he imitated Huaisang, smirking without warmth. That man had been the reason Xichen stabbed him. Meng Yao also suspected he was the one who sewed Nie Mingjue back together.

"What would you have me do?" the smirk was gone, "Short of dying or losing my limbs."

Jiang Cheng was quiet for a long moment as he considered the question. He wasn't sure how to answer it.

"You'll have to think of something you can do." Because it had to be meaningful to Meng Yao. It had to come from a genuine effort and not something he was told to do.

"There are times when living is more difficult than dying." he usually hid the effect his death had on him, but it might be helpful for Jiang Cheng to see, "Nie Mingjue killed me; he would have killed Lan Xichen too." his gaze was distant, "I couldn't allow that. He had to make do with my soul."

"Do you expect me to feel pity for you?" He would never feel pity or sympathy for Meng Yao's struggles. Because of Meng Yao, he had lost everything.

His sister. His brother.

But it gave him some satisfaction to see Meng Yao actually effected by thinking of his death. It meant he was actually suffering.

"Pity? No. But you can understand that what you wish for me is already in motion." Meng Yao knew the price of getting one's hands dirty and Jiang Cheng could not live with that on his head. So why not let fate right the past's wrongs?
