Winter Gala

WHAT: The Winter Gala Fundraiser for Jeopardy Relief Efforts

NOTES: This post will serve as a catch-all for logs for the entire event (though you’re also welcome to post things elsewhere, of course).

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Well, mostly. In the wake of a near-apocalyptic event, the city of Jeopardy is in need. What started out as an idea to advertise Rikki Chadwick's burgeoning business, after a little more planning and nabbing some ideas from Kenzi's post, she and Rupert have reconfigured and rebranded their idea to focus less on her and more on the relief effort.

Characters will enter the venue after giving a small donation at the door and they will be greeted by a large room lit in blues, soft pinks, and purples. From the ceilings hang snowflakes made of glass. The centerpieces are also made of glass. Come to think of it, nearly all the decorations are made of glass. Except, that is, the mistletoe hanging from several of the rafters and archways. A buffet-style dinner will be served from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., at which point, the buffet tables and seating tables will be cleared away to make room for the makeshift stage for the DJ and a gigantic dance floor.

Drinks will be flowing, music will be playing, and people will be bidding on silent auctions to win everything from one of the centerpieces to a date with their favorite imPort and everything in between. So, eat, drink, and be merry until you can't stay awake any longer. Why not? It's all for a good cause, after all.

"Bidding on me, huh? A man could be flattered." Jonas was teasing as he approached David, smiling warmly as he did so.

He was amused that his friend had bid on, and won, him in the auction, and he intended definitely to make good on his offer.

Clad in a very colorful outfit, he was having fun.

A man could also be dressed in a way that makes David try VERY hard not to wince. If that was what Jonas liked he wasn't going to rain on that parade. At all. Instead It was important for him to move on, address the matter at hand, which he does by extending a hand to shake it.

"A man COULD. But I bid on a few friends. I was hoping to drive the price up, not that I'm not thankful for an excuse to spend time. I'm thinking mini-golf. We can discuss whatever you want and I will resist trying to see if my psychometry works on you where the previous power did not."

"A new power? Amazing." He hmmms, then offers a hand, freely. "Or you could find out now." He is not afraid of David's power. He won't push his friend, but he won't shy away from him either.

"If you want to." Jonas was not afraid of David, and more than willing to be there for him.

"Also, mini-golf sounds interesting. I have never tried it."

"Psychometry, but I would prefer not to do it now. There is much going on here, and I don't want to end up on my ass as I deal with it if I really can pull things from you like I can from other objects. I just hope you aren't offended if it does take you in part of that. I doesn't really differentiate well between sentience and non-sentience. Just doesn't work on currently living biologicals."

And Jonas isn't exactly biological. As for the mini golf... Well, it's possible Jonas will win.

"Of course. I understand." Jonas nods, unsure, himself, how he would qualify.

"Otherwise, I hope you have been well." Jonas smiles at the man, glad to see him. He has few enough friends, either old or now, and he is always glad to be around them.

As well as one can be in this place of places that was prone to ruining them in new and interesting ways. For now he sighed and shook his head, because none of that really mattered now did it. What mattered was reassuring Jonas.

"Better now than I was before. Though I admit, I almost did something that Tommy would approve of when that whole Joker thing happened."

Jonas raised an eyebrow. "You're not the only one. I have had too many people get hurt from it. I would gladly toss Joker into some deep dark hole and never let him out if I could."

His anger is like sparks, raging in his eyes despite his pleasant expression. And for a moment, he is the man who once brought the world to a standstill because his wife was nearly killed. But then he shakes it away, taking a long, unneeded breath.

"Someone else found him first."

Well most people didn't, while in full possession of their faculties, take a gun and go out to find and possibly shoot Quentin Beck. So yeah, he might be in a very select group.

"You're aware of Elixir, the mutant from home? And the powers he had over life and death? The sickness trapped him in a memory that caused his death-powers to go into overdrive. So yes, people got hurt."

But Joker would definitely deserve beaten with a flaming baseball bat. David gets that rage. And echoes it.

"Lucky for them."

"I am. And, to speak frankly, fuck." That sounded bad, very bad.

"Is he... how is he doing?" Because Jonas knew what it was like to feel responsible after losing control. Even when it was not your fault.

Jonas rubs one hand with the other, angry, but pushing it aside, and glancing at David. "And you? Are you okay?" For he cares about David. This man who is a new friend, familiar and not at the same time.

Very bad indeed. David had been the only one to touch Josh directly, but he had almost gotten sick from even that brief brush of skin.

"Better now. But it wasn't an experience I want to relive. He's scared of his powers on that spectrum, and this won't have helped," David sighs, pinching the bridge of his nose.

Was he okay? Could he even be okay? No, he didn't think so. At all.

"I'm left wondering if there is a means where one can even sufficiently punish villainy when death does not last for us."

Jonas nods. "I can imagine, and I hope he can find himself some comfort." Jonas knows that he has drawn heavily on the comfort of his not!relationship with Kenzi. He has never explored such a thing before, but right now, it has been a very good thing.

David's question sparks a thought, and he speaks quietly.

"Perhaps a form of forced penance. Long ago, some city-states used to force those who were career criminals to work to help those they had hurt, doing work for them, and even providing for the families of victims through their work and toil."

“Ah, but powers. And putting them away from others that would free them. There is no hope,” he laments. Beck has messed with him so much that he doesn’t much know what to do with it. Other than try and not think about it.

As for Josh... well, he has a date so there you go.

“So, mini golf. You ever play?”

"I have not. My predecessor did, and I can access the files if needed, but I prefer to learn with my own experience."

Jonas smiles at the other man, and glances past him, eyes caught by Kenzi for a moment as she moves through the room, but then he pulls himself back to David.

"Is it something you enjoy?"

“Promise not to use math to fully calculate the perfect shots,” David grin, “and I’ll pay to get you one of the really cool looking balls.”

Half the joy is playing with a really interesting ball. And beating your friends to be honest.

"Of course. I would not want to cheat." Jonas nods.

"There are cool looking balls?" He is amused.

"Well of course. Tie-dye and rainbows and eight balls. So many different options if you pay a little more."

David wouldn't want to cheat either, so he's going to leave his glasses at home that day.

"Sounds like a plan, then. Just let me know when, and I will be there."

Jonas likes this idea. A lot.

"I'm thinking we should either head down to Heropa for it, or maybe wait until spring. I would be at a disadvantage to have to wear thick winter gloves for the event."

"Spring might be better. Though I can book us into hotels in Heropa for a good price." Jonas chuckles. There are perks to being a travel agent.

"But there is no time limit for me, and I am always glad to see you." He gently taps David's shoulder.
