[ She already has a job, but her mind goes a mile a minute, and there's only so much flying around she can do or calling Kon to keep her company. Kara has no end of love for her family, and never tires of their companionship, but sometimes she knows she wants to be out there doing something heavy and mindless, just exercising her abilities and nothing else. ]

[ There is a familiar heartbeat around. She hasn't said anything yet, if an ambush is coming, it's a poor one. Gone are the days she would have pulled him out by the scruff of his neck and demanded to know what he wanted. Earth has made her softer, and she doesn't mind. ]

[ She busies herself with the construction, helping to take up girders, watchful for accidents. Someone's already fallen this week, and there are heroes around, sure, but she was closest. She'd like to be the closest. Even on her coffee break, her eyes still scan the site. ]

[ Clark's son isn't exactly a known entity, but he's better known than the cousin he speaks of. Damian gets wind of her before long - catches sight of the flash of the familiar symbol of hope emblazoned across her chest - and subsequently decides that the best way to get to know a girl is to stalk her.

He takes after his father in that way.

But she's part of Clark's family. Just like the annoying little boy is. And so, just like the little boy, he feels obligated to protect them.

He doesn't ambush so much as he simply stops following and lets himself be seen. Waiting for her on the ground floor - not in uniform, he doesn't actually think that would serve this meeting well. ]

[ It would have explained a few things, sure. But Kara always prefers to ask — questions lead to conversations, conversations follow one after another, and that's how things in the world get easier. ]

[ She looks him up and down just once. ]

I'm sorry, I don't think I've met any version of you.

but in this case - he hasn't met a version of her either. this is where a normal person would extend a hand to shake or offer a greeting. damian, instead, studies her with a serious expression. ]

[ Shaking hands is still a new concept, to her, but not being friendly on a first meeting. ]

[ Or used to. Jon had said he lived with his cousin - for all he knows, though, she could be from Lois' side of the family and this place just happened to give her a very familiar powerset.

[ She frowns. For a moment, she debates not answering the question at all. ]

They are my family.

[ A little more insistence. ]

[ She lifts her chin slightly. She doesn't know him, and by his own admittance, he didn't know her, not before now. They've worked hard for their privacy on Earth, and she won't be the one to jeopardise it needlessly. ]

Why are you asking?

[ He practically mirrors the expression, radiating defiance. He should be nicer, he should be asking her nicer. But Jon Kent is --

But this world is something he can't fathom, and he has to admit, he's terribly jealous of it. ]

I work with Clark.

[ He uses Clark's name on purpose. Kara feels it — and is unhappy about how it lands, but it lands. ]

[ She measures a breath. Not about to lie, but she's not detailing her entire life's sob story for a relative stranger, a friend of Clark's or not. ]

He's my biological cousin, on my father's side.

[ His brow furrows.

That shouldn't be possible. That - shouldn't be possible. Surely someone would have found her, the last Kryptonian wouldn't have gone unnoticed for so long. His father would have -

but there it is. Right there. Different world. Different father. Different set of circumstances. ]

[ And there aren't that many others. Her own father — but that is better left where it is, left alone to take however long it needs to heal. ]

[ It's fairly obvious what kind of work he does, but still, he could surprise her, he could be a journalist. ]

clark was robbed of his family. completely. she represents what could have been. she and the boy.

it's... painful. it was hard to see a father that actually cared about him, in his own weird way. harder to see a family that the joker had ripped to pieces before it had even been formed. ]
