[ as soon as he walks in, the girls at the counter go quiet. "oh my god, is that bruce wayne? they whisper. "why is he here? there's no way he needs glasses." "i dunno... i think he'd look pretty good." and they go back and forth, gossiping.

but when he smiles in their direction they quickly avert their gazes as they pretend to work, all of them quietly disappointed as he chooses a certain bespectacled ~~reporter~~ writer to approach instead. ]

[Clark has a lot on his mind lately, most of which doesn't even involve his day job, but here he is anyway and here he is not noticing Bruce has entered the store. Well, supposedly⁠—in truth, he knows before Bruce is here the second he steps inside, but he continues to go about his business...right up until the time he approaches him.

Clark nods.]

Bruce.

I was thinking about getting a pair of glasses. Something discrete, except without being discrete at all.

[ he smiles, and leans forward against the counter top. ]

Something a lot like yours, actually.

[Oh yeah, that's subtle. Clark looks right back at him without blinking.]

What color did you have in mind?

[ that's the joke, but maybe a little too inside for this clark. ]

Don't you need to give me an eye exam first? You know. Somewhere private.

[ bruce raises an eyebrow. ]

I'm not a doctor. You'd have to go elsewhere for that.

[But he's not actually that obtuse, so.]

I've got a break coming up if you need me to direct you to someone who can help, though.

[ and then one of the ladies comes over and starts ~~not~~ gently slapping him on the arm over and over. "go and help. him look for glasses, clark! i'm so sorry, of course he'd love to help you."

bruce just smiles at the manager, and then more knowingly back at clark. ]

Well, Clark? After you.

[He is not the best employee. Or the most popular, after today.]

Come on, then.

[He doesn't look like he's searching for a private space with no one around when he steps out of the store. He doesn't have to. The x-ray vision helps with that, also the super senses. It's not long before they've meandered down a quiet side street—helps that the weather's not great today.]

I'll cut straight to the point, Clark.

[ he stops, hands in his pocket, and glances at clark once he's sure there's no one in earshot. ]

You've heard as much about this problem as any of us, and we're going to need you. I think it's time you took off the glasses.

[He doesn't really know Bruce, but he'll pay him the respect of not treating him like he's an easily fooled idiot.]

I've heard it. But what you need to know is I'm not who you think I am.

Yeah, I picked up on that already.

[ he reaches into the inside of his jacket pocket and pulls out a small, green, glowing gemstone. ]

All I need to know is can you hit hard.

[He glances at the gem and back up, not even blinking. It's pretty, he guesses?]

Yeah. But I'm not Superman.

[He sighs.]

I've just got his powers. I've never fought with a....a superteam, or whatever.

[ he slides it back in his pocket and then takes a few steps away, his other hand reaching for the other pocket. after a moment, he raises his hand with a batarang placed between two fingers and without warning turns to hurl it at clark's face with little hesitation. ]

[He could catch it, just snatch it right out of the air, but he doesn't. Clark doesn't break eye contact as it bounces off his face.]

[ bruce pinches between his eyes and sighs harshly. ]

That's not the result I was hoping for.

I could have caught it easily. I'm just not interested in being manipulated into doing what other people want me to do.

[He crosses his arms over his chest.]

You could have come and had a straightforward conversation with me instead of this coy, cloak and dagger crap.

[ his hands go back into his pockets. ]

Let's go back into the shop then. We can have a nice conversation with all of your coworkers about how I dress up like a bat and you have the powers of a god.

Please. You're the great detective right? I think that's what the comics said.

[Not that he ever read them, but of course there was some cultural osmosis about Batman.]

I'm guessing you've kept an eye on me for a while. You could have found me almost anywhere you wanted. Or, you know, used the phone.

You're not the most important part of this, Clark, but you are an important part. I've had my hands full.

[ a pause. ]

The world is ending-- as it's so wont to do-- and you either help or you don't. If you do, maybe we win. If you don't? Maybe we still win, but it'll be a hell of a lot harder without you.

[He sighs. And is quiet for a long moment.]

There's a reason I've kept quiet about what I can do for so long. It's got nothing to do with selfishness.

[Well, mostly nothing. He thinks he's entitled to a little bit of selfishness. Everyone is.]

Doesn't mean I don't give a damn about what happens here.

[ bruce closes the distance between them, a familiar side-by-side that reminds him a little of back home. ]

Nobody's asking you to wear the symbol permanently, Clark, but it represents something important to a lot of people here. After this is done, go back to your job selling eye wear if you want, but if there were any time to get over your reservations and put it on, this is it.

[It would be nice if Clark felt anything familiar in it, but it's just discomforting. Only Lois has ever been this close to him and known.]

I'll think about it. [He adds, quickly—] Fast. I know there's not a lot of time.

Less time than you think. But I made you a suit, if you want to use it. You can find it at the Hall of Justice. I retroactively gave you access, just in case you didn't want your lady friends to know you were the strongest man alive.
