The Meadows, being a place largely created from magic, has a subtle strangeness to it. From the outside, it could be taken for any old Appalachian farm: scattered barns and stables, a lakeside castle, a roomy wooden farmhouse, a 19th century stone chapel that some hoodlum graffitied. There's evidence that the farm is home to unsupervised teenagers, too, in the donut tracks that mar the grass and the remains of regular bonfires. As long as the monsters are out of sight, everything seems ordinary.
Once inside the farmhouse, however, the odd discrepancies become more apparent. The layout of the rooms doesn't quite match how the house appeared from the outside. There are windows where windows shouldn't be, stairways like vertical mazes to secluded rooms, and views from rooms that look into other worlds entirely. Half of the appliances work without any source of electricity, fresh coffee's always waiting in the pot without anyone having to brew it, and the refrigerator never seems to run out of leftover pizza. Things are simply wrong about the place, for all the cozy warmth of its design.

» MURPHY
No. It's belonging that unsettles John Murphy.
It's late, and Kylo can feel Murphy moving below. The kitchen, maybe. Perhaps he's hungry.
In need of a midnight snack himself, Kylo peels out from the bedroom and pads down the narrrow stairs, not bothering to turn on the lights— with his extrasensory perception he hardly needs to see after all.
It doesn't even occur to him that Murphy might need to see him to avoid stumbling into him in the dark.]

The room hasn't changed yet, still looking the same as it did the first time he went inside. Murphy isn't ready for whatever Ronan can do. He doesn't know how to feel about someone else slipping into his dreamscape. Murphy doesn't even know what his room should look like.
There's a soft humming sound just outside of his room and it has him curious enough to venture out of his room. He slinks down the steps, his footfalls light and silent. By the time Murphy reaches the kitchen, he realizes that he's hungry. Good thing Murphy has been enjoying pizza because that's all there is when he opens the fridge. He takes three. One hangs out of his mouth and one in each hand.
Murphy's about to leave the kitchen when he sees a darkened figure slink into the kitchen. Tall and broad. The pizza is forgotten because Murphy needs his hands free. Punch, ask questions later. He swings his fist. ]
no subject
But Murphy is more animal than anything else in this moment, and the oncoming punch is a defense rather than an attack. Any response at all will feed into this blind aggression he's retreated behind.
So Kylo lets the blow land, absorbing the impact to his solid abdomen with a soft hiss of breath. He makes absolutely no further move.]
Murphy.
[...maybe his voice is a little tighter than before.]
no subject
Murphy doesn't even take a step back.
He stands there frozen and waiting to get punished. He's waiting to get slapped, choked, waiting for Kylo to throw him on the ground, maybe beat his face in. All these likely situations have happened before and those memories are flashing in his mind like a silent film.
But nothing happens.
Slowly Murphy takes the remaining pizza from his mouth so he can say something. He just needs to string words together to make a complete thought. ] I - thought you were someone else. [ Like who? Murphy doesn't know. Just someone else that wasn't Kylo or Ronan. Just some shadowy figure. ]
no subject
But another thing Murphy doesn't know is that Kylo recognises the shape of the fear seizing his heart as he waits for judgement. He remembers the horror of realisation in that heartbeat after lashing out, so much clearer and sharper with the reflection of it staring back at him in the dark.]
Clearly.
[He says, dryly. While he's quite possibly incapable of providing reassurance, nothing about his solid, immovable response suggests an impending attack. There will be no punishment today.
His gaze slides past Murphy's face towards the fridge.]
I was going to heat mine up.
[Which... might be an offer? It is admittedly hard to tell, with Kylo.]
no subject
But when Kylo doesn't even scold him, Murphy can't help the incredulous look at sweeps across his face. The change is disconcerting, it's something that Murphy isn't used to. For the moment, Murphy lets himself breathe. Slow and shallow inhales and exhales for now. He can still feel his heart thrumming against his chest.
Shit. Kylo reminds Murphy that he's got two slices of pizza laying on the floor. He crouches down, head tipped up to keep his eyes on Kylo's towering figure and scrabbles to pick up his mess. ]
I was just going to take these into my room. [ His attention ticks over to the oven. Maybe if he knew how to work the damn thing. ]
no subject
Leave it. [He suggests. Demands. There's very little difference, with those words delivered in the particular timbre of his voice. He opens the fridge, where the pizza has already magically replenished itself, retrieves replacement slices for Murphy as well as a couple for himself, and carries them over to the oven. Microwave. Whatever it is that Ronan dreamt up. He hits the light on the stove hood.] You don't want to eat that, now.
[Obviously. Or at least it is, if you've never had to deal with food scarcity.]
Here.
[And, though he might not be the gentlest with it, he makes sure Murphy can see what he's doing as he puts the pizza in to heat up.]

It almost gets him to the farmhouse ... until he notices the freaking giant bantha just chilling out in a paddock outside. And then all thoughts of meeting a Star Wars go out the window at the sight of an actual, real live bantha. ]
Hey there ... nice bantha ...
[ He's absolutely swinging up to the top of whatever fence is around her, no matter how high it is. It's not like heights can stop Spider-Man, after all. That's probably where Kylo (or Ronan) finds him: perched on top of the paddock fence, reaching out to pet this amazing creature in front of him. ]
no subject
It's not so early as to be socially unacceptable, though, and Kylo's been up and active for hours. As much as it might have started out as a joke, Kylo finds assisting with Ronan's farm chores to be a surprisingly rewarding use of his time— and, of course, a satisfying way to keep himself in good physical condition. That Ronan likes to watch and Kylo likes to not so accidentally overhear his thoughts is an added bonus.
This time of year, there's a lot of haymaking to be done... which is what Kylo's doing when he spots his guest perched on top of the fence to make friends with the shaggy-haired beast Ronan pulled out of Kylo's imagination.
It's... sweet. Not that he'd admit it any more than he'd admit to his own fondness for the creature. Finishing up, he lopes over in long, unhurried strides.]
I see you've met Bob.
[Hello is for other people.]
no subject
But - okay, Kylo Ren. Here. In the flesh. And ... oh god. He abruptly bursts out laughing. ]
You named the bantha Bob?
[ Is it a good idea to laugh at Kylo Ren? Probably, not, but too late. ]
no subject
For now, at least.
In fact, he seems more amused than anything, if Peter can read the performance of the particularly flat expression on his face as he gazes up at him.]
Ronan named her Bob. I trust you didn't have any difficulty finding us.
no subject
Well, aside from his usual nerdy nervousness. ]
Nope, address worked perfect. Also Ronan did a good job.
[ Bob the Bantha. He loves it. ]
no subject
You haven't seen one before. [He assumes. Gestures towards the hairy beast nuzzling towards Peter as if trying to earn his attention back.] A bantha.

Murphy hasn't been here for too long and hasn't met every housemate so he assumes he's someone he just hasn't met yet. He doesn't think too much of it, this person eating their pizza, and slinks to the fridge. A fridge that's magically always stocked with pizza and beer.
He takes two. One for now and the other for directly after finishing the first bottle of beer. ]
no subject
He's somewhat unflappable regardless, taking a bite and watching the newcomer as if this was perfectly expected. ]
The Outsider.

[ The fridge door is closed with the bottom of Murphy's socked foot. It shakes because Murphy still hasn't remembered to be gentle on anything so he continues to slam doors and stomp down the stairs (when he's not sneaking around at odd hours of the night).
The cap easily unscrews between his fingers. He hadn't even needed to twist, the cap just unscrewed itself but that's something Murphy hadn't noticed. Not yet anyway. ] Do you have a costume?
no subject
[ Unless there's a costume party he didn't know about when he arrived uninvited. He doubts it. ]
