WHO: Rua, Ruka
WHERE: De Chima
WHEN: June 20th
WHAT: Birthday(s).
WARNINGS: Emotions, gifts, possibly cake?
The nice thing about being twins with someone was that it was basically impossible to forget their birthday.
"....oh, crap!"
...unless you forgot your own birthday too. Which Rua was realizing halfway through the school day, punctuated by bonking his head on his locker, that he pretty much totally had done.
"How the hell did I forget both of our birthdays?!"
If he was feeling charitable to himself, he could've said that when he'd got ported in, he'd switched to a completely different calendar, so he just wasn't used to his and Ruka's birthdays sneaking up on him this much. Except he'd been ported in like two literal months ago and he checked his phone like every five seconds (he was a teenager in whatever-the-hell-current-year this was, of course he did) so he was perfectly aware he had absolutely no excuse for not knowing the date.
He thought about what he was gonna do for a few seconds. It was way too late to order something for Ruka. He had some money, both from his stipend and his job, he could buy something on the way home, he guessed. But if Ruka was home when he got home and she went straight into the Happy Birthday stuff when he got home, he wouldn't really have any time to wrap it and if he just gave her some unwrapped thing, that'd make it super obvious that he'd forgotten until the last minute.
"...wait a sec," he suddenly said as he grabbed a book out of his locker. "What am I so worried about? She's probably all busy with her...weird Ruka stuff too!" He made a dismissive gesture with his hand. "She probably forgot too!" To test his theory, he pulled out his phone and fired off a text to Ruka.
'Hey, you doin' anything tonight?'
There. Juuuuuuust vague enough to test the waters. If she said no, she wasn't doing anything, it meant she'd probably forgotten. If she said yes, she had plans, it meant she'd definitely forgotten and he was in the clear and he'd have all the time he needed to pick something out and wrap it up all pretty and crap. If she actually had remembered it was their birthday and said so...well...well then he was pretty much screwed.
"She probably didn't remember, though," he muttered under his breath as he stared at his phone.

no subject
Which is all well and good, except when you're the kind of person where the days blur together, and sometimes it's hard to keep track of which season it is, which month, which day.
And so, even with foreplanning and good intentions, when she gets Rua's message, it's received in a moment of focus on one of her work-projects, so the response is quick, and effortless, and telling:
'Not that I know of. What's up?'
no subject
'Nothin! I was just wonderin. I got work after school so, I'll see ya at home!'
He fired off the response to the response and let out a breath of relief...that quickly turned into a grimace when he actually. Stood there for a sec and thought about it.
"Geez. We both forgot our birthday," he said, rubbing the top of his head. "That's probably not good, huh." He noticed with adults that their birthday was much less of a big deal. Did this mean he and Ruka were growing up? That they were too busy with big important adult stuff to remember their birthdays? ...probably not, but it was a nice thought for a minute or two.
Either way, after his shift, he could stop off and buy something for her on the way home. If he really needed to disguise it, he could put it in a bag from work and she'd just assume he'd bought a new glove or something until he got a chance to wrap it. Bada bing bada boom! Easy!

Bonk.
For the second time today, Rua was bonking his head on something. This time, it was the front door to his house. The lights were on inside, so Ruka had made it home before him -- that didn't bother him so much. Something else was eating at him. It was evening by this point. His shift had ended a while ago and he'd been looking around the city gift-shopping since then and for the amount of time he'd spent on it, he didn't seem happy with what he'd ended up with. He glanced at the small shopping bag from the mall in his hand and let out a low, frustrated sigh as he got his key out and let himself in. He hadn't bothered to hide it in a bag from his job.
"Hey, I'm home!" He called out to the house as he tossed his keys in the bowl next to the door. He dropped onto the couch and pulled out his phone. He didn't seem all that concerned with covertly finding some wrapping paper anymore, either.
