May Swear In

WHO: Everyone!
WHERE: Nonah's Fairgrounds
WHEN: May 12th
WHAT: May Swear In
WARNINGS: None expected; please warn in threads if necessary

Spring is finally beginning to fade into summer with weather starting to warm, and the trees and flowers beginning to blossom into their peak, and what better way to celebrate the welcome change in weather than with a FAIR?

The fairgrounds have been transformed overnight with a swath of rides and attractions filling the field from one edge to the other. There is, of course, a booth for imPort registration that's positioned near the entrance of the fair. Even so, imPorts with an interest in registering may have to ask a fair worker for directions. The signage on the registration booth is, for some reason, faded and easy to miss among the bright and bold banners and lights drawing attendees to the different game booths that line the paths further into the grounds. Must have just been poor planning on someone's part!

Further into the park there are a wide array of the standard carnival games. Games include from balloon pops where you can win your very own "signed" copy of imPort photographs, but does anyone actually remember signing any photos…? There's also a ring toss that no one can seem to win, but the prizes include items like a water bottle discarded by Tony Stark, or dried flowers from one of Persephone's actual vines! Or maybe you'd like to prove your sharpshooter skills by knocking milk bottles down with a pellet gun? Prizes range from cheap, poorly painted figures of popular imPorts, to a handful of detailed and poseable figurines of both imPorts and famous media characters for the very best shooters.

Past the games are the many, many different food booths. You can chow down on Fried Stuff On Sticks, offering fare ranging from deep fried cheesecake on a stick to deep fried corndogs on a stick to a variety of tempura on sticks. (It counts!!) Or perhaps you prefer a healthier roasted meat? There's no shortage of options for that: roast turkey, roast beef, roast bison, roast alligator? Strangely few, if any, of these booths offer any vegetable options, but intrepid imPorts can find a booths offering superfood smoothies, quinoa bowls, or fruit parfaits tucked away at the very end of the food court.

And don't forget the main attraction (at least, the attraction Galla is most pleased with): CAPTURE THE FLAG. A parcel of land roughly the size of two side-by-side American football fields has been fenced off, and a brightly colored banner that looks like it manifested directly from the 90s is hung across the entrance, inviting all to enjoy! Inside, there is a scattering of trees to provide some natural cover in addition to man-made structures like sections of wall, pieces of large construction pipe to crawl through or hide in, and, of course, the different flag bases:

Yes, those are inflatable dinosaur heads inside an inflatable Jurassic Adventure. The flags are located inside of the temple the top of the "mountain" which, conveniently, has a rock climbing facade just in case climbing to the top of an inflatable hill is too difficult for some players.

Capture the Flag games are held hourly, and imPorts can choose to compete against each other, against natives, or even to team up with local native attendees! When competing against or with natives, imPorts are asked to refrain from flight, mind-reading, or teleportation, but it isn't a rule being strictly enforced. In fact, apart from those requests, imPorts are encouraged to use their powers as much as they like! There are natives lined up around the perimeter to watch the games play out, so why not give them a show to remember?

"Oh, same! We can go together, sometime!" Because who wouldn't want to spend time with this guy out of their own choice?

"That's kid of the point? Just mindless idiot stuff. Something to occupy your mind with that isn't just staring at a wall, but doesn't require actual thought."

He rubs his chin.

"Bit like getting drunk, actually."

"Could always use more practice." Hopefully not with that giant gun involved, but he wasn't about to mention that thing.

"I don't know, I've gotten pretty good at staring at walls." Guard duty did that to you. "But I'm not sure I can get the hang of this." And definitely not drinking, that was something he didn't want to touch.

"Uh huh. I was trying to familiarise myself with human guns in-case I was stuck like this for whatever reason."

With varying levels of success.

"Maybe not this, but I'm sure there's something out there for you," he says, mercifully not following it up with a suggestion that they go and get twatted. "Um... sorry if this is too personal, but is it because of the function thing? 'Cause I get having to try and break past that."

"It's worth considering as a possibility, given how many problems here seem to be Porter-related." Technically, all his problems right now were Porter-related, because he'd been too dead to have problems anymore when he showed up here.

"I do enjoy some things, a lot of them just aren't here right now." And there were the other problems, but he was not going to wade into those. "If I'd been ordered to have fun here, it probably wouldn't change much." That's what he was talking about, right?

"You mean like... everything?" He gets you, 622.

"What do you enjoy, then? C'mon, you gotta let me know. I remember going through this period when I was a little baby at ten thousand years old."

"Just about." That pretty much sums it up, yeah.

"Most of the stuff I like I already do to stay healthy, or it's not possible here." If you wanted to tie spacetime into horrible little knots, there was no place better for it, but cars that didn't roll on wheels were off the table, apparently.

"No offense meant, but what I'd enjoy most is to be back where there's other people like me. We were programmed to work together. When one of us gets separated from the rest, it doesn't tend to end well."

"None taken," he says with a shrug, shifting his weight and crossing his arms. Going quiet for a moment while watching people mill about around them.

"...I don't think people who weren't made the way we were can get it. Even if they try."

"And when they try, they usually ask the same questions everyone else already did before. They're more standardized than they realize." He sighs. "Sorry for calling you a droid before. Didn't know there was another word to use."

Riptide snorts bitterly.

"Hey, maybe one day someone'll just say oh okay and leave it at that. It's just kind of a reminder you're not the same as them..."

He trails off, shaking his head.

"Don't worry about it. Sorry again I was a stupid drunken bitch when we first met. Is there really no-one else from your universe here? That sucks. Sorry."

"I found one that got close, eventually. Took a while, though." So, not really.

"There's others, but," he shakes his head. "It's complicated." Until he found a satisfactory way to approach that mental minefield, he'd rather not mention that. Every time he talked about it, thoughts stopped fitting together the way they should.

"There's one other clone like me here, but he's from another time. There's been a change in command." Which was a bit of an understatement.

"The usual story, takes a while. Have to know everything about you before they consider understanding..."

He shakes his head.

"It's fine. I'm in the same situation with it being complicated."

Primus knows Riptide doesn't want to talk about Getaway and... more importantly, what he did to Getaway.

"Oh. Does that mean he doesn't really understand you?"

"How often do they tell you 'you can live the way you want now'? I get that one a lot." Usually from the people who looked the least qualified to give life advice.

"He's as close as I'll get here, but--" There was no good way to say it. "Some of his commanding officers are here, and if we didn't have a truce in effect, I'd be legally obligated to shoot them on sight. It'd definitely kill me, but I'd have to try." And he hated that he hadn't told Rex, but at the same time there was no way that would turn out well.

"His direct COs attempted a coup against our head of state. I still need to figure out a way to tell him that, but with the way we're conditioned, it might hurt him badly." Or he could side with the Jedi. That would be even worse.

"Not often, actually... I guess I'm alien enough that people don't even try."

Riptide hums, clearly deliberating on this. He was lucky in that MTOs didn't go through such harsh conditioning to the point of mental break when things get weird, but...

"If you don't tell him and he finds out later... do you think he'd understand why? Or would the conditioning block that, too?"

[personal profile] loyal_soldier 2018-05-14 06:55 pm (UTC)(link)

"I don't know. He definitely got different conditioning than I did, and he's got a higher rank than I do." That usually meant they started out with stronger minds anyway.

He sighs, ashamed with himself. "I probably should tell him. I just know how bitter a lot of the clones from his generation were when they were training us."

He rubs his chin, still thinking.

"Maybe. Try and ease into it? See how he reacts to stuff around it," he says raising a shoulder in a shrug, then raising an arm to clap 622 on the shoulder. "You'll figure it out. For better or worse!"

At least someone believes in you, bud.

"I should." Stars, this wasn't going to turn out well, but the alternatives were worse. He already knew that, and he should respect Rex enough to not pretend that he didn't.

He jumps more than he really should have at the touch. "Still not used to walking around without armor on," he mumbles by way of explanation. "Though I guess you know what that's like better than I do."

Riptide drops his hand back down immediately.

"Ah-- sorry. I should've been more careful. If it helps I would've reacted the same? Skin is so weird..." he says, poking at his own arm.

Baack to the subject matter.

"Tell me how it goes? I get how bad it is telling people about future stuff that turns out wrong," telling Tailgate he's dead... jeez. "I can't really give any good advice but... I don't know. Just-- good luck, I guess.!
