May Swear In

WHO: Everyone!
WHERE: Nonah's Fairgrounds
WHEN: May 12th
WHAT: May Swear In
WARNINGS: None expected; please warn in threads if necessary

Spring is finally beginning to fade into summer with weather starting to warm, and the trees and flowers beginning to blossom into their peak, and what better way to celebrate the welcome change in weather than with a FAIR?

The fairgrounds have been transformed overnight with a swath of rides and attractions filling the field from one edge to the other. There is, of course, a booth for imPort registration that's positioned near the entrance of the fair. Even so, imPorts with an interest in registering may have to ask a fair worker for directions. The signage on the registration booth is, for some reason, faded and easy to miss among the bright and bold banners and lights drawing attendees to the different game booths that line the paths further into the grounds. Must have just been poor planning on someone's part!

Further into the park there are a wide array of the standard carnival games. Games include from balloon pops where you can win your very own "signed" copy of imPort photographs, but does anyone actually remember signing any photos…? There's also a ring toss that no one can seem to win, but the prizes include items like a water bottle discarded by Tony Stark, or dried flowers from one of Persephone's actual vines! Or maybe you'd like to prove your sharpshooter skills by knocking milk bottles down with a pellet gun? Prizes range from cheap, poorly painted figures of popular imPorts, to a handful of detailed and poseable figurines of both imPorts and famous media characters for the very best shooters.

Past the games are the many, many different food booths. You can chow down on Fried Stuff On Sticks, offering fare ranging from deep fried cheesecake on a stick to deep fried corndogs on a stick to a variety of tempura on sticks. (It counts!!) Or perhaps you prefer a healthier roasted meat? There's no shortage of options for that: roast turkey, roast beef, roast bison, roast alligator? Strangely few, if any, of these booths offer any vegetable options, but intrepid imPorts can find a booths offering superfood smoothies, quinoa bowls, or fruit parfaits tucked away at the very end of the food court.

And don't forget the main attraction (at least, the attraction Galla is most pleased with): CAPTURE THE FLAG. A parcel of land roughly the size of two side-by-side American football fields has been fenced off, and a brightly colored banner that looks like it manifested directly from the 90s is hung across the entrance, inviting all to enjoy! Inside, there is a scattering of trees to provide some natural cover in addition to man-made structures like sections of wall, pieces of large construction pipe to crawl through or hide in, and, of course, the different flag bases:

Yes, those are inflatable dinosaur heads inside an inflatable Jurassic Adventure. The flags are located inside of the temple the top of the "mountain" which, conveniently, has a rock climbing facade just in case climbing to the top of an inflatable hill is too difficult for some players.

Capture the Flag games are held hourly, and imPorts can choose to compete against each other, against natives, or even to team up with local native attendees! When competing against or with natives, imPorts are asked to refrain from flight, mind-reading, or teleportation, but it isn't a rule being strictly enforced. In fact, apart from those requests, imPorts are encouraged to use their powers as much as they like! There are natives lined up around the perimeter to watch the games play out, so why not give them a show to remember?

Unfortunately, no-- [she has to pause to swallow the remains of her second bite, stepping aside to let some eager kids race over to the food truck.] At least, not to such scale, I think. We've no vehicles like this, nor the technology to make food like this...

Matter of fact, I am faster than humans, but I don't know about the wind. Definitely enough to split that defensive line. Ready to get that flag?
khajidont: (Jaime - idek I'm running out of words)

[personal profile] khajidont 2018-05-29 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
Pfft, in your dreams. Do I look like the kind of guy that backs down to you?

[ Yes, the guy running the stall mutters, and Jaime pauses to give him a deeply unimpressed look before lifting the gun and taking aim, making a quiet shushing noise underneath his breath revealing that Khaji doesn't care at all about the rules.

When he squeezes the trigger, he hits the target off-centre. ]

Well, it's not bad. Here, you go.
khajidont: (Beetle - Grin)

[personal profile] khajidont 2018-05-29 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
[ The armour doesn't feel as it should - it's a little more pliable than if it were made out of any protective material found on Earth, and just faintly warm to the touch. More than anything it seems alien enough for Blue Beetle himself to be mistaken for being an alien instead of a human in a suit of armour; his glowing eyes and lack of a nose only contribute to that impression. ]

Nice to meet you, Gemini. And like I said - I'm the Blue Beetle. That's the only name you need, though you can shorten it if you like. Everyone else does.

[ It's no surprise, she thinks, that it's Jaime the stall attendant dismisses; he has a softness to him that's nothing to do with the shape of his jaw or the breadth of his shoulders. Ruka, meanwhile, has a rigidity that reads like sharpness, and even her visible impairment doesn't lessen it — it probably intensifies it, regardless of the fact their trial is based in part on visibility. Between the two of them, she probably seems the more dangerous.

Then again, maybe that isn't wrong.

Her hum is non-committal at his shot, and she takes the gun as he passes it over. No real weight, which is expected, but when she goes to take her aim, she lowers the toy with a frown. Ugh. Usually her gloves are fine enough for fine tasks, but they're sweaty in the heat, and the fabric is bunching uncomfortable at the knuckles.

She bites at the fabric of each fingertip and tugs, and after a moment of struggle pulls her hand free. The empty glove gets half-tucked into a pocket, and she goes to take aim once more.

A breath in, half out, and squeeze.
]

Mmm.

[ Dead center. She passes the gun back, but takes noticeable care to not let her bare hand touch his. (Of course her hand seems smaller outside of the dark fabric, but her fingers are long and thin, and her wrists bony and narrow. In a word, it looks frail.)

A genuine smile, hooking into one cheek.
]

Best of luck, catching up.

[She looks to her Nico thoughtfully for a second.] I'd like that.

Do you guys... or I guess did you, but do you keep up with your dads?

[ Part of her kind of thinks those natives would deserve a levitation, if Leo's been pushed to that point, but... a public commotion would be the opposite of helpful here. ]

Of course. [ Her expression softens, ] What part of the fair do you think he'd visit first?
shesalittle: (Are You Kidding or What)

[personal profile] shesalittle 2018-05-29 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, well, move forward is great advice for getting fired. If you killed a dozen people along the way, though, it kinda feels like you owe enough that you should have to pay something back.
shesalittle: (Disbelief)

[personal profile] shesalittle 2018-05-29 02:40 am (UTC)(link)
[She sighs, shifting into position. This is probably not a terrible skill to have, even if she's not sold on her teacher yet.] Learning to shoot a gun won't help me with self-defense any more than learning how to play Whack-A-Mole, though.
girlybruiser: (are we judging who has the best booty?)

[personal profile] girlybruiser 2018-05-29 02:47 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, my!

[ The rapid succession makes her wince a little bit, but she's quick to relax again once all bottles have dropped to the floor. The carny nods at Jason, impressed by the level of his accuracy. Even the small crowd (of mostly kids) gather nearby to ohh and awe at that display.

Haru is quite amazed herself, though now she feels a bit nervous to follow up. ]

You're quite the marksman, aren't you? That was amazing!

[ And now she's up. She can't help the glow of her face as she squares her shoulders and takes aim once the bottles are set back up. With more kids watching to see who's going to win this competition, it feels like an added pressure.

So when she fires away, she knocks one bottle, a second bottle, but the last bottle she misses by quite a distance in her nervousness as the crowd holds its breath hoping she'll hit it. ]

Ah... so close.

[ Yeah, the skepticism is leaking off of him. ]

Better is a matter of perspective. [ He fundamentally doesn't agree with Jaime's philosophy vis a vis not murdering people to solve problems, so the idea that a non-lethal, controlled Scarab isn't necessarily "better" in his eyes, even if he knows that's not what Reyes means. ]

You've been working as a hero, haven't you? There must be public records. Articles, photographs, witness accounts. The data is there, if I search for it.

[ He clearly thinks Jaime's referring to the time spent as an import. ]

It should be worth the study.

[ The itch is still there. Negotiator, unlike his second in command, was never satisfied with knowing what was happening, he always wanted to know why. How. He should have killed Reyes much earlier, but then he'd never have known what the error had been, and it nags at him. Now he has all the time in the world, and he intends to use it. ]
eloquentness: (miffed)

[personal profile] eloquentness 2018-05-29 08:06 am (UTC)(link)
Wait. They're pulling this kind of garbage on kids?

[ Iris flinches, making a mental note to record this particular booth's name and owner for some "justice" later. Mess with her and other legal adults all they want, but when a kid's stuff is openly brandished - that's a new low. ]

I would've taken the poor goldfish over all of this in a heartbeat, but right now... I'm kind of thinking I want to sic a lawyer on these guys.
eloquentness: (we could maybe...?)

[personal profile] eloquentness 2018-05-29 08:18 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, exactly at the fair. [ she groans, with exaggerated effect - and if she weren't also catching a ride from her kid brother, she would've pressed a hand to her forehead and swooned, victorian-style. ] I've already eaten my entire weight in funnel cake, and I'm pretty sure that kale salad is the only thing my stomach can handle.

[ ... on the bright side, she apparently succumbed to deep-fried goodness earlier. ]

Well, that, and I saw someone deep-fry Kool-Aid and actual sugar cubes, so that killed all desire to indulge.

[riptide hastily fires back at the target, not scoring as well but... at least hitting it.]

Cheating by omission of human culture! [he twists the gun, trying to squirt duo instead.]

[ Oh, great. More kids - and, from the sounds of it, more kids that are into something at least halfway resembling the hero business. Jaime decides to tuck that away to ask about at a further point so it doesn't seem like he's doggedly pursuing that line of thought in the way he always wants to, choosing instead to answer the kid's question. ]

Longer than most people. Don't worry, I don't think you and your friends will be here as long as me. [ People tend to get a little alarmed whenever they talk to him about this; it's best to head off any concerns as they come up. ] I've been here for four years.

Really? Never? By your third round you were starting to look like a natural.

[He means it too. She clearly learns quickly.]

I think it's even more impressive that this was your first time, because carnival games are known for being rigged. Either these are the most honest carnies I've ever seen or your skill just outmatched them.

[He winks.]

I wouldn't say nothing. You must have done something for that many people to recognize you.

[He's tempted to ask but isn't sure if she wants to talk about it, so he leaves it open for her to respond however she wants.]

It's important to know your boundaries when dealing with people, though. You can't stop them from recognizing you, but you can place yourself in a better situation to deal with it. Or take yourself out of the situation completely.

Like, if a crowd starts forming, give out a couple of autographs, or take a couple of pictures, and then withdraw. After awhile I think even the public will start to get the message.

[she makes a soft, impressed sound, giving him a more careful look as she's freed.]

You're an old hand at this kind of thing, aren't you? At least-- you seem to be, from the way you speak. Is it because you've been here long enough to know, or...perhaps from a world with similar circumstances?
fauxmarth: (hey thanks!)

[she turns to face the growing defensive line before them -- imPorts and civilians alike.]

I'll flank left.

The tourney, I think. [she nods, more convinced by the second as she glances toward the garish inflatable shapes in the distance.] We were discussing what sorts of festivals we had in our own worlds, and what could compare... Perhaps we ought to begin there.

Not particularly. But I can't say I'm particularly famous here either. I haven't caught the attention of many.

[ All in all, Rex is good at staying out of the limelight. He's quiet, willing to give others their time in the limelight, and has a distinct skill at turning down the press without much of an argument and doesn't seem otherwise exceptional to anyone. Boring to a fault, one-word answers and all.

That's how he prefers things. Undue attention just makes him itch. ]
I intend to keep it that way. My business isn't anyone's business. [ Looking at him, it's easy to see how he'd manage to evade attention; there's nothing extraordinary about him, but there's a certain rigidity to the set of his features, a sharpness to his face that does half the work of scaring people off for him. ]

Why were you famous in your home world?

More like I've been practicing all week for this. [The crowd makes Jason more alert, self-conscious himself. Sure, it can be fun to have kids ooh and ahhh at you, but he's not sure whether that kind of attention is what he wants right now. He's trying to keep himself a little under the radar. So he gives an awkward chuckle.]

But you're not bad. Don't let the pressure get to you. You wouldn't have hit the first two if you couldn't hit third.

Knowing how to shoot a toy gun isn't gonna do much for self-defense one way or the other. Toys are for fun.

[And only a little bit similar to shooting a real one.]

Raise your arm up and use the line of it like a sight.
