Sing Sweet Nightingale
WHO: Gemini de Mille and Kelly Ann Mason
WHERE: Tootin' My Own Horn School of Music
WHEN: March 19th
WHAT: Music lessons. More or less.
WARNINGS: None, and none expected.
[ The thing about being a music teacher is that Kelly Ann doesn't know to play. Like, anything. She knows what sounds good and what doesn't, and how to properly hook up the amps and mics and AV equipment to make sure that the whole stadium will be able to rock out without blowing out the whole grid.
But playing the piano? Or a fucking recorder? No. So most of the time she's at the school she's trying to teach herself how to play, well, anything.
She's getting better at the guitar.
This also means she doesn't have any classes and is technically "on call". Turns out the school is more interested in the advertising power of having an imPort than a good teacher and will do just about anything to keep her. So she is definitely surprised when the intercom buzzes. ]
Miss Mason?
[ She rolls her eyes. ]
Dude. Seriously. Kelly Ann. Please
[ There's a pause. ]
There's a student coming to see you, Kelly Ann.
[ She blinks in surprise. ]
Oh. Uh. Ok. Thanks for the head's up?

But not sleeping every single night was turning into a real bummer, and to try and get over it Gemini had turned to music, listening to it every night and beginning to sing along. Then the thought had occurred to her one night; maybe she could do it herself? She could sing and dance, tell a good joke, maybe a life of performing was for her?
Which is what has brought her to the Tootin' My Own Horn School of Music for some professional advice. After all she wanted to make sure she could actually perform to a high enough standard before potentially embarrassing herself on stage.
So here she is, bouncing on her toes slightly, dressed in white woolly hat, yellow scarf and thick coat, waiting for her teacher.]
Um I'll wait I guess?
[She says looking to the receptionist for confirmation.]

Oh. Hey.
[ Um? What the fuck she's gorgeous? Kelly Ann feels weirdly intimidated, and tucks some hair back into her bandana. ]
Thanks, Miss Green. [ To the lady. ] So, you wanted some kind of like, lessons? My classroom's back here, we can talk about what you're looking for on the way.
[ She's totally winging it. And badly. But she waits for the woman to join her before heading down to her room. ]
I'm Kelly Ann, by the way.
no subject
Hi, I did yes!
[There's something a little off in the other woman's reactions but Gemini can't quite place, she looks a little nervous for some reason which is weird because she's not intimidating is she?]
Sure.
[She answers warmly, trying to reassure, nodding and following along in Kelly Ann's wake, looking around with interest as they head through the building.]
I'm Gemini de Mille.

Kelly Ann Mason. [ She offers a hand to shake. ]
Ok here's my classroom. [ She lets Gemini in and closes the door behind them.
Well. Shit. Now what? ]
So what were you hoping to like, do with all this?
no subject
Where to begin? Let's see.]
Ok, well I really need some advice about how to perform. I'm thinking of auditioning for this singing job at a bar and I know I'm going to enjoy it but I don't really know what I'm doing...so could you help?
[Oops that all came out in a bit of a rush.]

[ She doesn't even bother with the nickname, as that seems like it would just confuse things further. She leans against the desk and listens, nodding along. And relaxing a little as this suddenly became a lot more doable. ]
Ok. Yeah. I think I can help? I mean. I don't know what they told you about what I do back home, but I'm a roadie. I worked as rigger for one of the biggest bands. We sold out stadiums and arenas and shit. So like, I don't actually know how to play any instruments or anything, or much about like, signing for performance. But the stage presence and shit like that I might be able to help with.
[ She points to the speaker system around the room. ] You want any like, musical accompaniment or anything? We should probably warm you up a little before we really get started.

[There's a chair near the desk so Gemini sits herself down in it, listening as Kelly Ann explains her background, and getting visibly enthusiastic in response.]
You worked as a roadie? That's awesome! Which band was it? [She grins, very interested all of a sudden in Kelly Ann's story, so much so that for a moment she almost forgets why she's here until the other woman points to the speakers and reminds her.]
Oh right yeah I guess that would help with doing it properly. Um, [she looks a little awkward all of a sudden], there's something I need to tell you though, although I don't think you'll believe me until you hear it, so uh do you have a favourite singer here?
no subject
[ She brightens up a little at the question. ] Yeah. The Staton-House Band. Started out on the American leg of their world tour and we were on our way to Europe for that leg when, uh, well. [ She shrugs. ] Ended up here.
[ She tilts her head and looks at the other woman with a skeptical expression. There's all kinds of weird shit around here, what could she think Kelly Ann won't be able to believe? ]
Here? I dunno, everything's like. A bit off? So I'm not exactly sure who is here and who isn't. But uhhh Patsy Cline?
sorry for the wait :(
I don't know them, but then again my memories only go back a month so maybe I did once. Hopefully if you go back you'll be right where you left off. [She smiles, reaching forward to give Kelly Ann a friendly pat on the shoulder as she's given a name.]
Oooh yes I know her! Let's see, here goes. [She clears her throat, focusing on her memory of listening to Patsy Cline sing and begins on a section of song.]
Why do I let myself worry...
[As she sings she looks at Kelly Ann a little nervously for her reaction, because she no longer sounds like herself, in fact the voice coming out of her mouth is Patsy Cline's, mimicked right down to inflection and pitch so uncannily it's like listening to a recording only this is very much live.]
No worries!
[ She doesn't really say anything when Gem doesn't know the band. Nobody does, which is starting to make her wonder if she made the whole thing up. At least she still has all her photos and videos from the tour.
She listens while Gem starts to sing, her big eyes growing ever rounder. ]
Well. Shit.
no subject
[She agrees to those wide eyes of Kelly Ann's nodding animatedly.]
That was my reaction too when I figured out I could do it and since then I've been wondering if there's some way I could use it and well singing seemed like the most obvious thing...
[She trails off, uncertain about whether Kelly Ann approves or disapproves, finishing in a small quiet voice.]
What do you think?
