[ the coffee shop is still quiet, but it has become popular over the months. Not only is run by an import which attracts native clients as it is, it also attracts people who enjoy Japanese snacks and pastries, and above all, people who love coffee – when the owner can only drink that, it’s only natural the coffee to be amazing.

The word that Kaneki provides food to inhuman imPorts also spread rather fast, and naturally that influences the clientele as well. It’s not that there are many vampires and imPorts that need this sort of food, but considering they are all living together in a human society, Kaneki thinks this would still be important even if he only had one client who needed it. And from time to time, he always gets a weirdo or two wanting to try human blood for some sick reason.

In any case, the place is still quiet and not usually full, which is good for anyone who wishes to spend some time reading. Those who do, they can find a collection of books the coffee shop has, but those who want to try the food or the coffee can certainly approach the counter to order. Kaneki is there, currently talking to a customer ]

What does “Re” mean, anyway?

There are a lot of meanings. It means “King” in some languages. [ the girl smiles wide, amused that this means “King Café” ] it can also mean “Restart”, “Remake”… “Repeat”.

So which one is it?

[ Kaneki smiles, amused ] That will be a secret. [ the girl “aww”s but she gives in, not pressing the matter. It’s not really a secret, but actually, all those words fit the coffee shop and all of them are the reason why he chose “re”. ]


Night time
[ Kaneki is sleeping better, but it doesn’t mean he is able to sleep all the time. In truth, there are still many sleepless nights and he does still look like he hasn’t slept in a while, with huge bags under his eyes especially at night.

But if he can’t sleep, there is no need to stay in bed all night, right? Once D33 is sleeping, he leaves the house for a walk, ending up in an imPort city, wandering through the streets without any specific objective in mind. Almost like a vigilante in a way, which means kaneki might step in if he sees someone in trouble, but ultimately he isn’t looking for trouble.

Finding familiar faces will change his route and he will gladly spend some time with them. Or maybe it’s a new face, but because the tattoo is glowing under Kaneki’s clothes, it can be seen which means anyone could tell he is an imPort.

And finally, when the sun is coming up, Kaneki finds one spot either at a park or even at a top of a building (wherever he thinks he might be alone), watching the sunrise in silent. He even brings out his kagune, one single red tentacle emerging from behind him and resting besides him – Kaneki never cared much to think about this ability of his, as he never saw it as anything but violent and horrible, but recent conversations with Charles made him curious enough to bring the kagune out and reach for it, poking the thing from time to time. ]


Shopping
[ Shopping is probably the hardest part for Kaneki. He is a ghoul, he can’t taste anything, but he can make great food – however he needs great ingredients too. Kaneki has connections with Japanese markets and gets the freshest he can, but some things have to be local naturally, and he has to buy them if he wants to cook.

The problem is that he not only can’t taste it, he also can’t smell it. So when he grabs a tomato, he has no idea if that smells nice or not, when he grabs fruit he can’t tell if it’s the right smell. It’s a hindrance, that’s for sure.

So he will turn to the closest person while holding a melon ] Does this smell right to you?

[ With only D33 and sometimes Andrew helping out, things have been a bit trickier, specially when Kaneki has to leave the main shop and head to the private area. he is certain the others can handle themselves, but as the boss he still worries, naturally.

When Justine comes in, Kaneki tells D33 to continue serving the clients as he'd be with Justine for a bit, and after he heads to the private area with her. as usual, it's even quieter than outside, which is always good when you are there to eat some... unusual foods. ]

How have you been, Justine?

[ At the start, Justine only came when she had to. She'd stumble in, slick with sweat and sick as a dog, waiting until the last possible moment until deciding she would rather be disgusted at herself than go feral and attack someone and then be disgusted with herself.

But the time between visits is shrinking. She'll take a smoothie to go, to hold herself over throughout the week and keep up her strength. After taking a chunk out of her roommate, she decided that it's best to suck it up and deal with it. Kaneki being so understanding, admittedly, helps. She has a seat, settling into kind of a routine after a couple months here, smiling just a little after a yawn. ]

I'm doing alright. Trying to settle into some kind of normalcy, you know?

Hm- after everything that has been happening, it's important. [ they try to be normal, that's important too. Like the coffee shop, which is also an attempt at normalcy, an attempt to make them feel normal when they have no place to do that ]

I hope this year will be easier than the last, at least. [ he always hopes that ] Any plans for this year?

[ veronica will catch kaneki when he is surrounded by highschool girls asking him for food, autographs, coffee, pictures and selfies; while the coffee shop isn't usually busy, whenever Kaneki's group of fans come in - the Kennibals - it usually gets tricky to handle since it's only him, D33 and sometimes Andrew (though he isn't there all the time).

When he is done with the girls' orders, he finally has time to approach Veronica with a smile ] Hello- welcome to :Re Café.

Thanks. [She eyes the girls with a slightly resigned look, before she sighs. She'd only come in because she wanted a bite to eat, but with the Kennibals' interruption she's stayed—well, much longer than that.] You're a popular guy these days.

[There's something wry in her tone, like she's been there herself and found it lacking.]

Need any help fending them off if they get to be too much? [The offer is made half-jokingly.]

Aha- only among them, really. [ though they've been a fangroup for a while now. kaneki can't say he appreciates it, because it's actually pretty awkward. ]

Do you know a way so highschool girls will stop wanting to show me their fanfiction? [ yes, it gets that cringy ]

[ On a quiet day, Kaneki can be found reading through the books he has at the coffee shop; it's something he has re-learned to do in his quiet times, but it has always been something he loves. of course, as he reads he also pays attention to his clients, in case they need anything, or someone arrives.

When utena does, he puts down the book and greets her with a smile from behind the counter ]

utena-chan...! Welcome.

Hey, Kaneki-san!

[She waves at him as she enters, and flashes him a smile. She's still not used to being called something so cute, but... well, that's just Ken. His book catches her eye, and curious, she walks on over]

What are you reading? Anything good?

[ kaneki closes it for a moment, to show her the cover. Julio Verne, "Around the World in Eighty Days"; the cover is beautifully detailed and it's actually written in french - because of the automatic translator, Kaneki always tries reading the books in their original language now ]

Just reading some old classics, really. Verne's books are always very enjoyable.

For Crobat. [he shrugs, as best he can with three watermelons.] His main diet is blood, but he likes watermelons to play with.

[they wobble a bit. archie swears.]

Uh-- can you grab that top one 'fore it falls off and breaks?

[And there stands Freyja with a basket full of every single kind of apple that the store has to offer, puzzled by the offered melon even if she does lean forward to give it a big sniff.]

Ehh, it seems fine to me! I dunno lots about that kinda fruit, though...

[ well, at least she doesn't seem to be grossed out, so that is always a good sign ] I will trust your sense of smell over mine.

You seem to like apples a lot. [ he glances at Freyja's basket ]

There's lots more different kinds of apples here than there were on Windermere! I gotta try 'em all.

[She does give the melon a good thump, though, just to make sure it sounds okay. That's what people did on Ragna with their melons so clearly that must be a thing she does too.]

[ He couldn't sleep, not an uncommon issue for Bodhi but it was one of those nights where the usual methods of coping weren't helpful. Hence, being out for a walk in hopes that the fresh air would help a little. It was still on the darker side of things, but a lot closer to the morning hours to call it being out late. More so early, just the sun had yet to come up.

He's been out a while -- left a note so no one would worry if they found he'd left, and is cutting through the park to go back home when a face he recognizes makes itself known under the light cast by a lamp post. Bodhi stops near the bench. ]

Hey. I don't know if you remember me, things were kind of a mess last month, but - you helped me get home that one time?

[ghoulking]

[ Kaneki spots Bodhi approaching; he is a familiar face and kaneki is glad to see him better now - and not dying, that's always good. He greets the man with a smile ]

Hey- yeah, I remember you. Bodhi-san, right?

[onlydoubts]

[ Bodhi nods, with a grin. ] Yeah, that's me. It's good to see you again, Kaneki, in a not so dire situation.

[ He'd met so many people in situations that weren't good, it was a running thing about his life, now. ]

How have you been?

[It should come as no surprise that Andrew is always up with the sun. He starts most days by flying around the city as the sun rises and begins shining its light on everything. Which is why he has no trouble spotting his employer/friend from his spot on the roof top. That white hair is like a beacon all on its own but the kagune definitely stands out all on its own.

Touching down on the rooftop, Andrew goes to stand next to the other man, shooting the kagune a measuring look. He's never seen it out in person before.]

Well aren't you a sight for sore eyes. Should I be worried that you're not still in bed?

[His eyes narrow and he gives Kaneki an assessing look. We're not going back to you not sleeping for days on end mister.]

[ghoulking]

[ when Kaneki hears Andrew approaching, the first thing he does is to immediately hide his kagune - it fades away, like dust in the wind, as if it was never there before. ]

Aha- I woke up early today. [ more like he wasn't able to sleep, truly ] Sometimes it happens but - I have been sleeping better. [ thank you for worrying, mom ]

No need to hide it one my account. [The conversations they've had about Kaneki's ghoul nature have been few and usually related to some health issues he's having. But otherwise it's not something they speak of much. And it's not something Kaneki is in the habit of demonstrating. Which is why Andrew tends to maneuver around the topic when he can. But seeing the kagune has brought out his curiosity.]

Good. I'm glad to hear it. [He pauses for a moment before continuing. He's not sure if this is his place, but this has a lot to do with Kaneki.] D33 seems like he's been better lately since you got back. He...was a bit of a mess while you were gone.

[Total understatement.]

[Kang calmly sips on his coffee and waits for the girl to leave before speaking up:]

It's a clever name. Different meanings for different patrons.

[ Kaneki smiles back at Kang, moving close to him with a small smile. it's the first time he sees Kang at the coffee shop, but he won't comment on that ]

It's better like this, everyone gets to enjoy their own idea of it.

Cafe

[Angela rarely went to Nonah, most of her business was spent in De Chima where she both worked and volunteered or Heropa where she actually lived. But she'd heard about the café from general chatter and over the network and felt as though it was about time she checked it out.

So there she was, waiting in line behind the girl asking about the name of the place and smiling in amusement. Once the girl moves, Angela steps up.]

[ that's a new face, but Kaneki has seen Angela around the network. He smiles back at her suggestion ]
