the daddening commences
WHO: Kotetsu and Lucy
WHERE: In Heropa, at a bus stop
WHEN: uhhhh sometime. in september. waves hands.
WHAT: two nerds get lost on the bus
WARNINGS: none expected
[It all began rather innocuously. He'd gone to the bus stop that takes him home from work, the same one he's been going to for over three years now. From there, it was supposed to be a simple matter of waiting about fifteen minutes, and then going his merry way home and maybe taking a nice nap.
Of course, when your name is Kotetsu T. Kaburagi, life is never, ever that simple. The first hitch had been a cat. One of those cats owned by rich, lonely, old women, all decked out with bedazzled collars and their fur french coiffed, to be carried around in their expensive Italian leather designer purses. Anyway. Cats of course, not being meant to stay put in designer purses, get out, sometimes. And when a cat gets out in a bus station, it tends to cause a bit of Commotion.
Kotetsu misses his first bus home chasing said cat, which definitely gets up a tree at one point and definitely leaves him with a few greeting cards from its claws by the time he returns it to its owner.
The second time, it's a car breaks down in the middle of the opposite road. It's a safety hazard to leave it there, and so he misses his second bus carrying the car, passengers and all, to the nearest garage.
The third time he almost makes it; he's about to pay his fare when he hears the scream. It's a mugging, going on at the corner store across the street. He definitely gets cussed at as he runs off, apologies abound, and ducks into the alley next to the store before summoning his power suit. He gets an entire clip emptied out uselessly against the suit before the would-be mugger is tied up and dumped off at the police station for the cops to deal with.
He misses his last bus waiting at the wrong stop by mistake. It's when he's resigned himself to walking home that he comes across a young girl staring perplexed at the board with all the bus routes, and he pauses by her side, watching a couple moments before he decides to try to help.]
It's pretty confusing, huh? I swear I spent like a month trying to figure this bus stuff out when I first got here.
[A slightly self-deprecating laugh, and then he offers her a friendly smile]

[The truth of the matter, which she has divulged to no one because of how dangerous it is to share such a thing, is that she loves the independence she has as an imPort. It's terrifying, of course. She has no idea what she's doing most of the time in this universe, this future she's been brought to--but she has the luxury of figuring it out herself.]
[It's taken her longer than most would to figure this out, but then again, she's had different experiences than most. The idea of independence of any kind is deeply foreign, while at the same time being dangerously intoxicating. She can go anywhere she wants to. She can do anything she wants to. No one will be angry with her for coming home late, or indeed for going out on her own at all.]
[That doesn't mean she's being reckless or anything like that. She doesn't really trust her own skills enough to be reckless. But today she decided that she would go on a very small adventure. Instead of going straight to the Heropa library, she went walking around Heropa's downtown area for a while first. It's a nice little space, not as overwhelming as some of the busier areas of the cities. She allowed herself the small, practical purchase of a keychain shaped like a shark, to which she's already attached the keys to her apartment and her work.]
[But now she's trying to get to the library, and boy, she has no idea anymore what bus she was trying to take. What are connections? She doesn't know. This was all a lot easier when horses were the main mode of transportation.]
[That's when a voice comes from behind her. It startles her a bit, shocking her into turning around. More than that, though, when she sees who's speaking, a brief adrenaline spike has a metallic cast shifting over her face ever so briefly. It's gone in a split second, but still--it was probably hard to miss.]
Oh, I--I was--the library? [That's not a question . . . She sighs.] There's too many of them, I don't remember which one I was supposed to take. I think I might have missed it anyway.

Ah, sorry, didn't mean to startle you. I haven't been to the library a whoooole bunch of times or anything, but I could try to help you find it if you want.
[He offers a hand for a shake, giving her a smile.]
I'm Kotetsu.

It's fine, you're fine! I just didn't realize anyone else was around. Um.
[She puts her tiny hand in his huge one and shakes it seriously. Her handshake is ridiculously businesslike for a fourteen-year-old.]
Have you really never been to the library here? It's my favorite of the ones I've visited. But you don't have to help me if you're busy or something.

I've been a couple of times!
[Usually if he was supposed to meet Barnaby there for some reason or another. And once he went to take shelter from the rain and ended up getting punched in the face. (It's a long story ok)]
I'm just not really much of an, uh, researchy guy I guess. Anyway, I'm not busy. I was just trying to get home, but I've already missed my bus like four times already, and I'm not even sure there is gonna be a fifth one, so I might end up having to hoof it.
[He shrugs. It's really not that big a deal to him, honestly. It's not like he couldn't end up needing to go help with some kind of emergency on his way home, anyway.]
I don't mind taking a detour or two.

[She looks a little worried now--for him, not at all for herself.]
You really should be worried about getting home, then, but--if you do have a minute or two and you can honestly spare it, and you promise to go home right after, then I think we can come to an agreement.
[Lucy, you are in no way this man's mom.]
It's important that I get there. I've come all this way, and I have a strict schedule of research this week.

[Kotetsu, you just admitted to missing a bus four times. That statement doesn't exactly hold much water right now.]
I'm a pretty tough old man, y'know!!
[And he. thumps at his chest twice, like a huge fucking loser. I'm sorry this is the guy you just hitched your wagon to, Lucy, it's going to be a very embarrassing ride.]
Anyyyyway, lesse here--[He strolls on up to the board with the schedules and bus lines all listed, and gives it a gander. By which I mean, he sort of stares intensely but honestly sort of blankly at it, as if he could will the information to soak directly into his brain via osmosis.
After a minute of this Intense Staring, he points at one of the lines. It's a blue one.]
This one, I'm pretty sure sure this one goes to the post office, which is like, two blocks away from the library, I think. We could probably just walk that much.
[He lifts his head then to scan the area, anddddd spots the bus stop across the street. It's. Marked for the blue line, at least?? But lord knows if it goes anywhere near the library.]
There! I'm pretty sure we wait there. [BUCKLE UP, LUCY, THIS GON BE AN ADVENTURE.]

[Look, this is a brand of dadness that Lucy is not familiar with. It's entirely possible that no one has ever jokingly thumped their chest in her proximity like even once in her entire life, so. What even on earth?]
[She squints at Kotetsu in puzzlement for a few moments. Then, for lack of anything better to do, she follows him over to the board and gives it an additional gander.]
Oh? Well, that will work out very well, then. I don't mind walking. [In her day she walked uphill in the snow both ways to school--oh, he's walking. She scrambles to catch up.]
Thank you. I don't know if I said that yet. And I didn't say my name either? It's Lucy. Hello. [What a mess.]
