OH, SUGAR, SHE'S REFINED ALWAYS NORMAL PRICED
WHO: imPorts!
WHERE: De Chima, Virginia.
WHEN: November 20th, 4:00 - 10:00 PM.
WHAT: Registration in motion, with a little baking on the side!
WARNINGS: None anticipated; please let us know if this should be changed. OOC sign-ups for good deeds and the thankfulness wall can be found HERE.
When imPorts walk into the Swear-In, they will be confronted with a rather homey sight, despite the fact that they were requested to wear semi-formal clothing. All along the hall are long tables set up in front of the stage, and each place at the table is already set up with plates and cutlery, as well as familiar American Thanksgiving iconography such as cornucopias and decorative squash and pumpkins. At each place setting there is a sealed envelope. Once opened, imPorts will discover that children's drawings are inside, and while some of them are drawings of Thanksgiving and families, others are drawings of famous imPorts that the children had seen around town. On the back of each drawing is the child's name and age, a sweet addition to tug at the heartstrings.
Across the stage, a banner reading PAY IT FORWARD is hung. Once everyone is seated - or is at least standing by the sidelines in a quiet manner - a man in a well-tailored suit and a gleaming white smile steps up to the podium, tapping on the microphone twice as a sound check before clearing his throat. He's a man in his mid-30s, with brushed brown hair and a pleasant, handsome face to go with his sonorous voice. His speech is as follows:
With a winning smile to the cameras at the back of the room, the man steps off the podium, and the festivities begin.
Each imPort will find themselves served with traditional American Thanksgiving fare, complete with vegetarian options with a helpful waitstaff hovering around, refilling glasses and making sure that no plates go empty for long. Today of all days, select people from the non-imPort population have been invited to break bread with the imPorts, but there's no hostility to be found; they have been chosen for their unerring etiquette, though there are a few beaming children from the Granted Dreams Foundation present, quick with questions at every turn.
At the back of the room are a collection of tables. Paying it forward may be a concept that is occasionally restricted to buying coffee or helping neighbours, but for all of the less outgoing imPorts, there are a list of charities that need volunteers in the upcoming weeks: soup kitchens, English teachers, animal shelters and more are eagerly represented.
On the eastern wall of the room is a small banner that reads: I'M THANKFUL FOR... Underneath it is a small table with post-it notes and pens in a variety of colours on it, and all attendees are encouraged to write down what it is that they're thankful for, though there's certainly nothing stopping them from causing a little mischief. The contents of the notes will be listed HERE.
For all of those that tire of the endless good cheer and food and want to do a little work of their own, there's a hallway that leads to a huge room with several kitchens inside. At each workstation there are ingredients and recipes for an assortment of cookies from chocolate chip cookies for the novices to tuiles for the more senior bakers. A note on each recipe lets the bakers know that the cookies they bake will be packaged up and shipped off to charity... but surely, nobody will notice if imPorts sneak a taste or two of their own hard work.

"Good afternoon, imPorts, friends, family, and all of the above! I realize that we're a few days shy of Thanksgiving, but hopefully you'll forgive us for getting into the spirit a little early. Here in America, we treasure Thanksgiving because we have an awful lot to be thankful for. Just take a look outside; all around, you'll see neighbour helping neighbour. We take care of our own.
We are in difficult times, but that has not impacted the American spirit! No, more than that, such difficult times are what makes us stronger. It is up to us not only to show how strong our forces are, but how strong our hearts are as well. To that end, I ask each and every one of you to look outside of yourselves today, and to show the world what good, kind people Americans are, everything that the Russians are not. We are not built on military force alone, but in the goodness on our homefront, in gestures as small as volunteering at the local food shelter, or helping an elderly neighbour mow the lawn.
To that end, my friends, I urge you to do good this Thanksgiving, and to help your neighbours and friends. I have faith in your ability to do so. Thank you, and eat well! God bless you all."
With a winning smile to the cameras at the back of the room, the man steps off the podium, and the festivities begin.

The loud sigh disrupting the polite quiet is what makes Naruto's ear twitch, and he turns just in time to hear the perpetrator's comment, which in turn has him disturbing the quiet even further by leaning over and whispering - or rather, shouting quietly - ] What's a Russian?
[ Talk politics to him, old man. ]
he's in-suit, btw!
Uh, a Russian is...uh, someone from Russia. Which is another country. There's a stupid war goin' on and the government here likes to make everything about it.
no subject
What, there's a war goin' on right now? Here? [ He looks around like he's expecting to suddenly notice some of the tell-tale signs. ] Doesn't look like it. There's a war goin' on where I'm from and everythin' is all about that, too, 'cos there can't be anythin' else while people are in danger, y'know. But it doesn't look anythin' like this.
[ Not that he's actually seen the battlefield yet, but he can imagine. ]
no subject
They call it a "cold" war. Means there isn't like, direct fighting happening now. More like a lot of stupid politics that's hurting their own people more than the supposedly puppy-kickingly evil Russians.
They like to blame everything bad that happens on the Russians [when it's not uh, imPorts causing those bad things, but of course some of the shit media loves to try to paint those tragedies politically, asking stupid-ass questions about the loyalties of the imPorts], and don't get me wrong, there's been some awful crap that we can confirm Russia was behind, but--I'm not exactly super keen on believing these guys got their hands totally clean, either.
[Not to mention, those spies that were involved in said awful crap sure did conveniently never get a trial.]
no subject
[ Naruto might be a pinnacle of honesty and faith, but that doesn't mean he's particularly clued in on things like this. Politics stretch juuuust a little far out of his reach - he only understands right and wrong. ]
It's hard to make people see both sides of the story sometimes, though. I bet all the Americans just wanna win and be proved right.
no subject
Pretty sure most of the Americans just wanna live their lives and be safe, same as the Russians. It's the politicians that are squabbling it out, but regular people end up suffering from it.
[It's an important distinction to him, the governments and the people. All those people who died in Sofia, they weren't soldiers. Sure, they were probably fed the same kind of propaganda that this government keeps pouring down people's throats here, but their biggest concerns that day were probably picking their kids up from school or what they were going to have for dinner, not championing the Communist cause or whatever the hell bullshit this "cold war" is actually about.]
It's just a mess, basically. And we're lucky enough to be their shiny weapons on display.
[He isn't often bitingly sarcastic, but the government here has a way of bringing out the worst in him. He's lost a lot of faith in them, over the past nearly two years. The only reason he even comes to these things anymore is in case they get attacked.]
no subject
Maybe this old dude just likes complaining. Yeah, that's probably it. ]
No-one's bein' hurt, though, right? [ He looks around, not really waiting for an answer. ] At least people are safe. Ain't like in my world. Here, at least people here got homes to go back to at the end of the day.
no subject
I'm sorry about your world. [He's pretty sure that's confirmation that there's a similar situation in Naruto's world to that of people like Armin.]
People are being hurt, though. I can't compare it to whatever you and your world've been through, but it is happening. There was an incident with a shuttle launch getting sabotaged where a buncha people could've been killed, one where mechanical sharks were released onto a public beach where several people were, not to mention the government here having a free pass to grab people off the street and hold 'em for hours to interrogate 'em without any evidence they did anything wrong.
It's not just the US and Russia either, there's other groups that've been taking advantage of the situation to make things worse. Bombings, people getting their heads hijacked to attack everyone around 'em, innocent kids getting kidnapped and shoved in these arenas to fight for their lives...
[Kotetsu's experienced each and every one of these tragedies. He's done his best to try to protect people, to save the ones he could, but there are always casualties--the shuttle being a rare exception. There may not be a constant mortal peril hanging over the world's head, but there was certainly suffering. Far too much of it.]
There's been a lot of people getting hurt, dying, suffering...losing their homes, too. Can't tell you how many fires and explosions I've seen just in the last two years, and that's just the stuff I experienced personally, from this side'a the ocean.
no subject
This happens a lot? [ It hurts somewhere in his chest region and sinks heavy in his tummy to consider that he had no idea before now. He wishes he'd listened better, he wishes he'd understood better, then he might have stopped anything bad happening before while he could have...! ] How'd you find out about the stuff goin' down? [ Tsunade gave him missions, people in villages talked - he's got no idea how to help here.. but he wants to. ] How can I help?
no subject
It's not so much that I found out so much as most of it happened right in front of me. Far as the rest goes...there's the network--and the government asks for help sometimes.
[He rests a hand on Naruto's shoulder, then, trying to sound a bit less doom-and-gloom-y.]
That's why I still come to these things, y'know? To keep an eye out, help if anything happens. Think that's why a lot of us even bother. That's what you can do too.
no subject
Yeah. [ He looks to the robot-suit-guy next to him and nods. ] Yeah, I'll do that. [ And from now on he knows he'll keep more on top of the network; keep more up to date with anyone who might need his help or anything worrisome that might be going down no matter how far away or how dangerous. It seems his old world had been a park-walk what with all the positions handed to him via the Hokage... this time he'll have to find his own missions.
He suddenly pauses for a moment, expression blanking like he's forgot something, then he reaches a hand out to his side. ]
I'm Naruto Uzumaki.
no subject
Wild Tiger. It's nice to meetcha, Naruto.
