Welcome to The Ashen Tree! This sleek, elegant private property leased out only occasionally for limited and exclusive events. The Ashen Tree is a five story, century-and-half old mansion down East 67th Street, constructed somewhat in the vein of those famed and excessive Vanderbilt houses. The theme inherent to The Ashen Tree is in black and white -- this duality means more than just visual aesthetic. There is right, and there is wrong. There is good and there is evil. There is Registered and there is Unsettled. This reoccurring dilemma won't be lost upon your hosts, governmental or otherwise.

The thrust of this Swearing In is to play a game! There will be two versions of this game. If you are newly imPorted (if this is the FIRST Swearing In that occurred since you have been ported in), then you are automatically entered into a raffle to win prizes! You can enter your name into the raffle ONCE for EVERY THREAD with A DIFFERENT CHARACTER that you have! How lucky you are! If you have BEEN here (if this is NOT the first Swearing In that occurred since you have been ported in), then you may only enter the raffle if you WIN at the game.

What is the game?

The Identity Game.

Every imPort who is in the DESIGNATED ROOMS: ROOT, TRUNK, BRANCH, and TWIGS will do their best to pretend to act like another imPort. If someone (who is also in character, just like you are) guesses what imPort you are pretending to be, then THEY may enter their name in the raffle. If you guess the pretend identity of someone else, then YOU get to enter your name in the raffle. There is no sign-up for who pretends to be whom, and there can be multiple imPorts impersonating the same imPort. That will not be regulated. The more you guess correctly someone's pretend identity (which can be achieved by threading with many people), the more you get to enter your name in the raffle. You MUST guess the identity of the imPort being impersonated correctly -- there is right and there is wrong. If someone guesses your character's impersonation correctly, then you have to tell them. You do not have to keep the same impersonation for the WHOLE LOG, but you do for at least a single thread! No changing up identity on someone. ANY imPort can play this game, INCLUDING new imPorts. While new imPorts can play the Guessing Game, or impersonate other imPorts to their desire, their eligibility to enter the raffle is still judged differently. Because they're new!

The LEAVES ROOM is the "safe" zone. You can be yourself! You can stop pretending! Well, maybe some imPorts never actually stop pretending -- maybe there is some gray between all this black and white.

[This place is like something he feels DiZ would have liked. Riku pushes that thought away, taking a sip of the fizzy water he'd snagged from a tray-bearing waiter. He makes a face, leaning back on two legs of his chair to set it on the table behind him and pretend he doesn't know it.]

I thought it was Sprite... [His voice is a mumble, half to himself and half to whoever's sitting nearby.]

[Normie plops down onto the seat nearby, tired from all of the mingling. He looks at the glass on the table, then back to Riku.]

Pretty sure that's champagne. You want a Sprite?

It's just carbonated water. Water should not be fizzy. [He smiles gently, but shakes his head at the offer.] No, that's okay. Think I'll go without for a bit, actually.

You sure? I know the tricks to getting something resembling real food from places like this. If you change your mind, let me know.

[He looks around.] I think I preferred the country fair last month better.

Really? I don't know if I would have preferred it, but this is a new situation for me. Never been somewhere this classy.

I have, and it's this boring every time. Though this is definitely the best company I've ever been around. Usually the people are just as stuffy as the decor.

Heh. Well, there's no chance of that with the lot of us, anyway.

[Heiji was loitering, figuring he'd introduce himself to the people he might come to know over the time he had to live in this world, and managed to catch Riku's suave disposal of the water.

He chuckles, good natured.] This ain't the place I'd expect t'have Sprite.

Really? I figured they'd have whatever the guests wanted. Shame I don't have a power that applies in this situation.

Hm, maybe in one o' the other rooms? I could go check, but otherwise I'm stuck with th' same problem.

What? No, don't be silly. You don't have to do anything like that. Thanks, though.

[Grins.] Wouldn'ta been a problem.

[Can he take a seat? He's gonna take a seat.]

The name's Hattori. Just got int' town, as it were.

[This guy doesn't mind. It's not like he owns the table.]

Oh, so you're one of the new ones. I'm Riku. [He nods in an amicable sort of way, arms crossed on the table.] Well, might as well make yourself comfortable, you'll probably be around for a while.

[Pretend all you like, Riku, Mairon saw. An amused smile on his lips, Mairon slips a little closer to take a seat with a glass of champagne in hand. For a moment the maia is quiet, molten gold hair tucked behind slender pointed ears, and looks around before he turns his attention to the boy.]

What is Sprite? [Probably not the question he expected.]

[resipiscent]

[No, that's definitely not it. He blinks up as Mairon joins him, settling his chair back on all four legs.]

It's a... clear, fizzy drink. It's sweet.

[He's not sure if this person will recognize the word "soda", so he doesn't try.]

That was just fizzy water, though.

[dreadedone]

[He won't recognize it, not yet. It may be something he discovers over the course of the next few days though.]

Can you not ask for some? I imagine they would gladly find you something, considering the nature of the event.

I could, yeah. I just snagged it off one of those trays the waiters are carrying around.

[He smiles gently, shrugging.]

It's not such a big deal, really. I mean, it's my own fault for not asking.

[Riku is much more forgiving than the Maia. Logically, Mairon knows that those hosting the event and those providing the attendees with with refreshments can't be fully held responsible but he still would.]

All those attending ought to be given a thought for though.

Well, at least they offered it at all? [He shrugs again, unsure how to communicate that he doesn't really mind. It's just seltzer.]

Anyway, it's not a problem. You're new, right?

[ kanaya happens to be passing by, and cocks an eyebrows when she hears the comment. she hadn't really been impressed by most of the drink options, not when she's too young to partake in any of the good ones. instead, she sticks with her own silver flask, whatever its contents may be. ]

I can't imagine a more disappointing drink than seltzer. No color, no flavor, only carbonation for its own sake. It's more of a mixing ingredient than a true beverage.

[Riku raises a brow at the flask, but doesn't question it. Instead, he shrugs, looking over his shoulder at it again before meeting her gaze.]

That's kinda what I was thinking, but in more words.

Well, one can always be pithy, if she really likes, but if you want to really describe something, it will take more than a handful.

[ not that she'd ever be able to limit herself to a handful. ]

Yeah, but lots of people don't have time for "really describing".

[He smiles.]

So I try to keep it brief.

Brevity may be the soul of wit, but one isn't witty by being brief. Pith also tends to carry more weight than simplicity.

[ and what does that mean, if you don't have anything particular to say, make sure you say a lot of it? one shouldn't put it past her. ]
