all of us are in your face
WHO: An incognito Octopus & YOU
WHERE: All over
WHEN: Throughout March
WHAT: Doctor Octopus is exploring the Porter cities, and stumbles across some historical mirages
WARNINGS: He's a bit of a creeper. Also one of the mirage prompts involves seeing an execution by hanging.
It's been a bit since he's arrived. He spent some time on the Network, enough to get a grasp of the basics. He feels no particular urge to add his voice to the din just yet. Now is the time for patience. Patience and research.
For one, the cold war continues. Though from what he's been able to gather, they've replaced the nuclear with the superpowered -- a fascinating concept. Speaking of those with superpowers, the entire concept of the imPort wasn't quite the same approach as costumed heroes got in his own world. Their sheer popularity alone made it worth investigating. He's also in a new city. Four cities, practically, since the porter made travel between them so convenient. None of which are familiar to him. But Otto isn't going to let that deter him.
He's mostly undercover. He's wearing his usual sunglasses, and a hat he also managed to find. He's also donned a very loose, thick coat he managed to acquire, keeping his arms curled up carefully under it, just in case. But a particularly observant person might notice that something isn't right there; something is odd about that man's coat.
But while he might be trying to stay on the down-low, there's something else worth investigating: those mirages.
In Heropa he stops to observe a well-dressed gentleman from the 1500s. He circles the figure, before stopping and snapping his fingers before the man's face. He lets out a breath from his nose. "A poor illusion. What purpose does it serve?"
In Nonah, a soldier from the first world war rushes forward to embrace a woman with bright blonde hair. Otto abruptly remembers the woman he had been with at home, Stunner. What happened to her after he died? He turns away from the vision with a sour look on his face. But if he catches someone looking, he'll scowl at them.
In Maurtia Falls, there's a whole gallows visible. The crowd below, the executioner, a man with a bag on his head -- he's led up to the rope. Otto watches the scene passively. He doesn't move a muscle or seem to care at all when the plank is dropped and the criminal's life ends with a short fall.
He's far more interested in the reactions of the locals, who seem horrified and confuseb Almost under his breath he says, "The visions don't seem like a regular occurrence."
In De Chima there's a glimpse of Nikola Tesla working on his magnifying transmitter. It's only brief, lasting just a few seconds, but Otto smiles wide. "Magnificent."
((I'm fine with brackets or prose, so feel free to use whatever you're comfortable with!
Also, he's on the lookout for imports, so if your character is obviously an import, well-known as one for whatever reason, or uses video on the Network a lot -- please let me know if it's okay for Otto to recognize them!
Finally, if you want a starter for your character in particular, please feel free to hit me up. ))

Heropa
"I don't know." She replies. "Maybe these illusions don't serve any purpose. Maybe they're meaningless."
no subject
"That may indeed be possible. They could be without purpose; but if so, then they must exist for a reason. Perhaps they're an accidental byproduct of something. Or it could be a symptom of a temporal disease."
no subject
"I could see that. They could be the accidental byproduct of the meaningful illusions, you know - the ones that were here before, created by that one guy." Abigail suggests. "The idea of a disease is interesting. Like we caught something and we're all having a shared hallucination?"
It makes sense to her. She'd been told people could share delusions; this didn't seem that different.
no subject
He realizes he doesn't particularly mind speaking to this girl, if only to voice his ideas aloud. Though she did say something of use, and the best way to figure that out is to ask her about it.
"I believe I arrived to late to see any of these 'meaningful illusions'." His look into the Network had meant he had seen the post without the full context of what Dorian Gray had been apologizing for. "How were those different?"
no subject
"The ones I saw were illusions of people I knew. Others saw people they knew. It was like having your own personal ghosts following you around and staring directly at you. Never talking, or gesturing. Just staring." She answers. Of course, she was basing that solely on the illusions she'd seen.
nonah
Then Otto turns away and scowls at him, so Archie sticks his tongue out and flips the guy off.
no subject
Otto wonders if he'd have the nerve if he knew what sort of a man he is. A part of him wants to make what price such disrespect costs. He can restrain himself, however.
"A mature response."
no subject
He listens to her though, cataloguing her response in his mind. He can never dismiss a good source of information. He strokes his chin.
"Ah yes, no doubt spreading discomfort and fear among those who witnessed them. As if one were constantly under the eye of... whoever appeared. Was the person you saw an acquaintance or someone closer to you?"
no subject
"I saw my parents, a friend, my former doctor and others." Abigail answered. "Not all at the same time."
At least there had been that. All of her victims at once would have been overwhelming.
De Chima
Aurican flares his golden wings (giving off the appearance more of a serpentine moth than a dragon) and land. Aurican right now isn't as big as he will be in the future, but he is large, almost as long as a school bus and reaching eight feet tall.
A gust of air sweeps out as he lands on the pavement and before he can approach the mirage of Tesla, it disappears. He hisses in annoyance, wanting more time with the mirage.
no subject
It's almost impossible to see a dragon and not react. Otto watches it closely, holding his hat as the gust of air from Aurican landing almost whips it from his head. The creature was obviously here for the mirage - meaning there must be some semblance of intelligence. But how much?
Otto approaches, still keeping his arms hidden but very glad to have them. He takes a gamble, and speaks to the creature.
"It seems as if you have bad timing."
no subject
He looks back at the patch of air where the illusory man had been, vanished by now. "Yet there's a distinct difference in what you said you saw and the ones that linger now. If I had arrived sooner, perhaps I'd be able to study the differences between the two of them and see if there's a common link."
He's not a hero, he's not particularly interested in solving the problem. But it is an interesting puzzle, and one he'd like to solve.
no subject
"They don't talk. They don't touch us. It's not much of a link, but it could mean they're not here to hurt us."
She's experienced too much of dangers and threats in her life, to say it for certain. She knew that most of the real versions of the people she saw would have either frightened by her or angry at her. And her father would have hurt her if he could, out of 'love'. The illusion-versions had only stared. Still, it seems to optimistic to think these events would be completely harmless.
"Or it could be that they want to learn about us, before they do more."
no subject
"Yeah? Well, maybe try not gurning at random passers-by."
no subject
"I wanted to sense the image of lives past. I want to see if it is magic."
no subject
"If they are here to learn about us, the current ones eyes do not seem to track movement, but it is possible the illusions are merely a front for something watching us from behind."
He starts to pace a little, speaking both to her and also as if using her as a soundboard to speak to himself.
"And if they aren't here to hurt us, then I wonder if there's a reason for their benevolence. Or perhaps, to put it more accurately, their neutrality."
no subject
There's something pointed in his apology, as if by doing so he maintains the moral high ground rather than any specific desire to make amends. He's standing, strong and immovable with his arms folded, as if waiting for the next move.
no subject
He should play this carefully. "What a cruel turn of fate for it to disappear so quickly. That is also something I would very much like to know."
no subject
"The mirages look the same to me as it did when I am in my human body. I thought perhaps I might see something different through my real eyes, but they all look real to me. It might be magic."
no subject
...
...
"I don't accept your apology."
no subject
Abigail wouldn't be surprised by that. She had once been shocked by Hannibal's phone call and what he'd done to Marissa, but had since become accustomed to the actions he would take to satisfy his curiosity about her. It had even seemed normal after she had spent so much time with him. And a few mirages was nothing compared to murder.
no subject
"Then I rescind it. Clearly you are not the type of person who deserves one."
no subject
no subject
"I'm afraid there appears to be a misunderstanding. This isn't a problem. No, you don't matter enough to be a problem. You are an infantile feckless fool who has not even the slightest perception of how much of a waste of time you are."
no subject
Proving him right, no doubt.
"Shit! You're just like him! Damn, is your name Maxie? Oh, my god. I missed ya, Max!"
no subject
"Do your eyes normally discern the world differently depending on your form?"
backtagging after a hiatus! feel free to tag back or ignore at your leisure
"I do have to wonder at your usual demeanor that your acquaintances normally speak to you that way. Suffice to say that I am not Maxie."
no subject
digs my horrible little goblin claws into you
He grins, deciding Otto is Alright™ and holds a hand out.
"My name's Archie. What is your name, if not Maxie, eh?"
B)
He debates for a moment giving out his real name, but it's only a risk if the consequences were worth caring about.
"Dr. Otto Octavius."
(B
You know what? Archie shakes his own hand. Fuck you.
no subject
"You are a peculiar fellow, Archie. What is it that you do?"
no subject
He would have legitimately been interested in hearing said insight. "But there may yet be a chance to find another apparition."
no subject
That seems to be unlikely. Aurican doesn't see a pattern in how they appear.
no subject
What's a nice way to put "ex eco-terrorist"? Archie hasn't figured it out yet.
