He couldn't blame her for the violence, Chilton maintained a history book of it and had long ago adapted to the repression of blame. For the most part. Egotistical as he was, he feared the loss of certain friendly privileges more than a little slapping to his own self-satisfaction.

He wouldn't hold this against her. He couldn't.

But that didn't mean it hadn't agonized him, that it wasn't currently aching and searing.
