She wasn't behind the door when he opened it. But he could hear the water running in the kitchen. Could hear her breathing (even but not controlled), her heart beat (steady), beyond the rush of the water. The silence in the house made him feel like his senses were that much more acute. But it was probably just a side effect of him imagination. Of wanting to find her.

He walked with slow steps to the doorway. Put his hands up on either side of the frame to allow himself a little support as he leaned inward just slightly.

Took a deep breath.

"You finish that without me?" The question was meant to add levity to the silence. But it sounded hollow even to his own ears. He was half afraid she'd reject him right then and there. And half afraid she wouldn't. He needed to take this thing between them a little slower. Not the Drift, but connecting to it. And it had to start now. Before she turned around and reached out for him.

"Need you to stay there and talk to me."
