On some level, he would have been childishly pissed off at Hermann for getting what he wanted, and for walking away (again), and would have tried to get him reinstated in the same lab just because he would have hated being thwarted and wanted to make Hermann's life miserable.
And now...now, knowing himself better, Newt wondered if he might also have reacted spitefully to that relocation--jealous, like a spurred lover--because he wanted Hermann's attention on him, wanted acknowledgement of that codependent (probably a little unhealthy) rivalry. He hadn't been in love--not really--but he had wanted Hermann on some level. That had never changed in all their years together.
