[ there's no place like home, so claims an old saying. home is where the heart is. the list goes on, littered with ditties and ideals, all singing the same little message.

this, though, this doesn't look much like a home. it's a heart that makes a home, they say, but all he's got here is a box fitted in snug with a whole row of similar-looking boxes. it's got nice windows, a nice porch with a light. there's a nice post-box on the front with a nice, gilded number stamped big and bright on the siding. it's a nice box.

this is nothing like a home.

he stands at the sidewalk a while, alternating between inspecting the front of the rowhouse and the key in his palm. initial and general briefing was all well and dandy, but there comes a time when a guy's just gotta get his things in order before proceeding to the next outrageous activity. ]

[It truly is a nice set of boxes, isn't it? Home or not, it's definitely a set of comforts no doubt meant to pacify the majority of the stranded masses that comprise the imPorts--the sort one could eventually grow used to, really.

...Only, there's one thing that might ruin the atmosphere a bit, if Coby allows himself to be distracted from his thoughts--a rather loud, sharp set of noises, like a bear yawning while chewing on rocks at the same time.

Except it's not a bear, it's just two idiot pirates napping (and snoring) on the grass across the way there. Which might be better or worse than a bear, honestly. It's really a toss-up.]

[It really is a tossup, given the pair look like they haven't bathed in what was probably a few days, and their clothing was--in the best kind of wording: ramshackled.

And yet, there they are, sleeping outside in the beautiful sun as if they've been doing this sort of thing their whole lives.

It'd kind of be a really funny image... if a few neighbours weren't already staring in abstract confusion or disgust.

And so begins the life of Coby in Maurtia Falls.]

[ he thinks, if briefly, that it's odd to find the homeless so out in the open. (with a government and public image as bright and polished as this, there's no way there aren't measures in place to keep everything 'spotless'.) it's about midway through the third bone-rattling snore when he notices that one of the ragpiles has a familiar head of hair.

[ he's approaching at a brisk stride, coming to a stop a careful distance back at the line between grass and sidewalk.



oh god it's them ]

[Yep. One familiar straw hat and one moss-head that would almost blend in with the grass, if not for the--well, dirt and dust and, yeah, some of the lingering blood caked in it.

Even as the other man approaches, though, they show no sign of stirring, continuing to snore soundly as if sleeping on the most comfortable bed in the world.

What will you do, Coby?

[At least the 'excuse me' is enough to stir a certain captain, but certainly not enough to make him get up. A finger moves up, digging at his nose a little sleepily before he waves a hand at Coby--curling in against the ground.]

[Meanwhile this loser has slept through an entire storm before. Coby will probably have to be a bit more aggressive with waking him; the only movement from him at the sound of voices is to flop his head to the side.]

[You can't turn the sun off, Luffy. Wow, what kind of loser answer is that? You could do anything if you--

[He's suddenly jumping up and at them--knocking Zoro's head with his arm as he does so. On both feet and--still looking asleep as he squints over at Coby.]

[ this meeting is not in any way going like how he'd envisioned it. admittedly, his vision also contained no small amount of dramatic lighting and soaring symphonic background music to a backdrop of blue skies and glittering motes in the air.

I'd be happy to fill you in, but not on the lawn. There's a lot to fill you in on, actually.

one minute zoro is far off in dreamland, probably something to do with fighting mihawk in a battlefield littered with bottles of sake or something intensely ridiculous like that, the next there's an elbow in his face.

He's bolting upright almost immediately, scowl immediately replacing whatever peaceful expression of sleep he might have had moments before]

Watch where you're shovin', idiot!!

[Wait. Was that very pink head there before. Blinkblink. Blink.]

Grow up? You didn't grow up, you shot up like a tree!

[Still groggy, rubbing an eye, Luffy's going to ignore Zoro's yelling and barking after his Captain's clumsy knocking around to stand before the marine--comparing his height with the pink haired guy's own.

Man, he really did shoot up like a tree.]

Not on the lawn, huh. Well if there's a bar or something close by, we can get a bite to eat and talk. [Like usual. Lol what's having a house?]

Thank you, Luffy-san. I did do my best.

[ that's a beady eye locking onto zoro in disapproval, before sliding back to luffy. ]

I'd assume I'm here for the same reason you both are. My assigned place of residence is right across the street. [ he'll gesture, jerking a thumb over his shoulder to the inconspicuous building behind them. ]

Weren't you assigned a place to stay as well?

[Assigned place of residence? Zoro doesn't remember anything about that from when the soldiers were talking at him... 8|a;]

Were we supposed to be?

[They are pirates, and Coby's a marine. It makes sense the soldiers here might set Coby up with some amenities, especially if this is somewhere in the Grand Line like he's not 100% convinced it isn't.]

Across the street? [He looks up where Coby is gesturing, and his eyes are completely blank. He turns aforementioned blank look to stare at Zoro... his pinky finger digging into his nose.]

Didn't those military guys say something about that? I wasn't listening.

[It was just one of those things, like signing up to be a hero, getting free housing and money, being given jobs...

Luffy just hadn't been interested nearly the entire talk.]

Well, if it's a big place, we can just stay with you! Until we get out of here and back on the sea, that is.

[Oh my god. Those papers were important? Now Luffy is just. Looking away and trying not to draw attention to himself. His hands in his pockets and he's just...

Oh look, there's a really nice cloud over there, he's going to stare at it while Zoro and Coby talk about stuff...

[He can feel the waves of judgment rolling off of Coby here. And okay, admittedly, he should've paid more attention, but. It hadn't seemed important at the time, and there was the whole aggressively bleeding out thing....]

I just figured it was more of their "hero" crap...didn't seem all that important when I was lookin' to get back right away.

Yeah, we're pirates. Not Heroes. Why would we wanna keep stuff like that?

I just wanted to get home as soon as I could.
