Housewarding Party

WHO: Max, Sabriel, residents of Heropa 035, and yooouuuuuuu
WHERE: Heropa 035
WHEN: Tuesday, May 17
WHAT: New arrival in Heropa 035, aaaand later that day, warding the house. Then testing out the wards.
WARNINGS: The combined presence of Mighty Max and Tommy Oliver may create a 90s overload, please be cautious.

A. Closed to Max, Norman, Duncan, and Tommy:

It was by pure chance that the home was spotless on the day that Tommy arrived; Max had been a bit paranoid about the magical roach infestation, and the length of time he'd kept things tidy after the fact was a personal record. But all in all, it looked like the roaches were finally gone for good — and just in time for Sabirel to come ward the house later today to make sure there couldn't be any more nasty surprises from long-distance spellcasting.

All three of the house's residents had the day off that day, and while Max was trying to get things ready for the warding (which he really had no idea what to do, so he just cleaned a little more), Duncan and Norman were around the house doing their thing, as well. It was, all in all, a pretty lazy day so far when their new roommate arrived.

B. Closed to Sabirel & Heropa 035 Residents:

It was later that afternoon when Sabriel arrived to ward the house as Max had asked, and he was caught between trying to keep a polite distance away and wanting to look over her shoulder and know everything she was doing. There were points where he tore himself away long enough to let her do her work in peace, but curiosity always seemed to drag him back eventually. Still, it gave her the opportunity to have some conversations with the other residents in relative privacy, if the opportunity came up.

C. Open to All:

Max had put out an open invitation for others — specifically, magic-users — to come and test out the strength and stability of Sabriel's wards. Not to say he didn't trust her, but it would be good for everyone if she knew about any holes or weaknesses in her magic that could be exploited before any actual exploiting was done.

More than that, though, it would be a good chance for some of Max's more scientifically-inclined friends to have a look at the ward and see if there's anything... science-y that could be done to strengthen or duplicate it.

And heck, this could even be a meeting of the minds for the magical and scientific sort, if they happened to strike up a conversation with one another while visiting.

[ Tommy's initial arrival may or may not have gone unnoticed, depending on how observant you are. His footsteps were soft, and it's not like he's shouting his arrival. But he's a big guy, and he's wearing an awful lot of green, so he can't stay unnoticed forever.

Whenever he runs into someone, one of his new roommates, he turns to them and smiles. ]

Hey, I'm Tommy. I'm the, uh, new guy here.

[ New guy?

The sight of Tommy stops Max in his tracks and he promptly forgets what he was going to do because new housemate! Max was pretty happy with the little family he'd built up so far under the roof. Maybe he'd get another big bro out of this.

Max grins, enthusiastically offering his hand. ]

Max! Welcome to the party, Tommy. You need help with your stuff? Or did you not come with stuff? We can get you stuff if you need it.

[ Tommy takes the hand readily. This isn't his first time being a new guy by any stretch of the imagination— he'd moved around frequently because of his parent's jobs— but it never got any less nerve-wracking. But this kid— Well, he's only two or three years younger than me— seemed friendly enough, and that was always a good first start. ]

Nice to meet you. I didn't really bring much with me. Just— [ He gestures around them. ] —what I have on me right now. I'm definitely going to need a shopping trip.

[ It's too bad his girlfriend didn't come with him. "Shopping trip" are her two favourite words in the English language. ]

Maybe. My clothes sure as heck won't fit you.

[ Said as he gives Tommy's hand a firm shake, eyeing the muscles on his arm. Dang, this guy was ripped. Max is pretty visibly impressed, but certainly not intimidated. His friendly demeanor doesn't even waver.

He breaks the handshake, gesturing broadly to the living room around them. ]

But we got plenty in the meantime. You know, indoor plumbing and video games and all the important things.

So, Tommy, what do you do back home?

[ Besides lift, clearly. ]

[ Tommy laughs at the clothing comment. It's true, he probably wouldn't fit into Max's clothes. And anyway, he had a certain preference for green clothes. ]

Besides school? Karate, mostly, and hanging out at the Gym and Juice Bar with my friends.

[ And saving the world on a weekly basis, but he'll leave that detail out. ]

I won't say no to video games, though.

[Tommy may be a big guy, but Norman's probably an even bigger one. It's pretty difficult to miss the redheaded Native American Viking who is sometimes described as a giant. He's headed to the kitchen when he happens upon someone notably larger than Duncan and Mighty Max.]

Hmm... [Norman appears thoughtful at Tommy's introduction.] I thought there might've been someone else around. The name's Norman. Guess you've been around a couple days already—met any of the others yet?

[Back in March, Norman was in on the plan to have Sabriel debrainwash Max. And just last month, he saw the Abhorsen practicing her magic in the park. He's pretty sure she knows her stuff, and is more than willing to approach the Mighty One or any of the other roomies who aren't entirely certain of what's going on...]

Don't worry. I'm sure she knows what she's doing.

[ It's not actually very often that Tommy meets people bigger than him, and he takes a moment to be impressed by the sheer size of this guy. But it's a brief moment, because he doesn't want to ignore what he's saying. ]

Just Max so far. It's nice to meet you.

[Sabriel didn't talk much- just a perfunctory greeting before she gets started, moving along the outer walls, pausing at doors and windows, tracing out symbols that fade into the walls as soon and she finishes writing them. Occasionally she stops for a drink of water, looking increasingly worn as time goes on.]

My pleasure. [Said with a firm nod and a neutral expression.]

So you still have to meet Duncan. He's "cool people". [He's not actually saying this with air quotes or being sarcastic, but there's a certain emphasis to it like he's testing out new, post-90s jargon.] Anyway, how're you settling in? What kind of job did they assign you?

I'm doing fine. I need to buy some things, but other than that...

[ He shrugs and grins. ]

And they made me a "part-time curator of rare and unusual coins."

[ Something in his tone of voice suggests that he finds this amusing. ]

[His eyebrows raise in interest.] Something to do with history or archaeology?

I think it's more like hobby collecting kind of stuff. History's not my best subject.

[ He laughs sheepishly. He doesn't really have a good topic at school. Unless PE counts. ]

[Duncan is the last roommate for Tommy to meet, and sadly he is not the most observant person in the world so unlike Norman, he hasn't even noticed that there might be somebody new living in the house. If he can't see it happening, it kind of...flies under his radar.

So the day he comes home from the lab and finally catches Tommy downstairs, he stops dead in his tracks and just. Stares. For a minute.]

...Who the hell are you?

[So. Duncan. Caucasian, 5'8", very skinny, 26 but frequently mistaken for a high schooler, dressed in jeans, motorcycle boots, and a button-down shirt because that's his idea of lab-appropriate business casual. Strangely precise enunciation on a neutral American accent for someone who speaks so casually, and also, the reason the house has a swear jar. Have fun, Tommy.]

[ And then you have Tommy at 5'11" and 165 lbs, all of fifteen years old but somehow managing to look a lot less awkward than most teenagers. Possibly it's the martial arts that have helped with that.

It's almost definitely the martial arts.

Still, he's clearly caught off-guard by the voice and it takes him a moment to recover before he answers. ]

Uh, I'm Tommy. I'm the... new guy?

[ He offers it like a question, even though it's more of a statement. ]

[what? no. new guy?! seriously? no!!]

What the fuck, when did we get a new roommate?! [another thing to get used to with Duncan, his language and his tone don't...always match. case in point, he's incredulous that he didn't notice, not upset to have a new guy around.]

[ Tommy scratches the back of his head and smiles sheepishly. ]

Several days ago? I, uh. I haven't seen you around before, or I would've introduced myself sooner.

Several days?!

Jesus Christ I need to stop spending so much fucking time in the damn lab.

[He steps forward to offer a handshake and a proper introduction.]

Well, I'm Duncan. Nice to meet you, finally.

[ By this point, if Tommy seriously thought about it— or knew about it, really— he might institute the swear jar himself.

He takes Duncan's hand and shakes it. ]

It's good to meet you. You have a lab?

[ He hadn't noticed a lab around here, but then, he hadn't gone looking. ]

Yeah, I work at Tesladyne. [He jabs a thumb over his shoulder in the general direction of...not here.] I'm a geneticist but I somehow found myself studying nanomachines aaand...the scientific properties of magic. [hapless shrug. this is just his life now, he guesses.]

Anyone fill you in on the house rules yet?

Science, huh? [ Tommy glances in the direction that Duncan pointed in, but naturally, he doesn't see the lab from here. ] That's not my best subject.

[ Tommy shrugs, slipping his hands into his pockets. ]

And no, I haven't heard the house rules yet.

[sigh] Max.... [slacking on your roommate duties, bud]

Alright, rule one, that hall light, [points, indicating the downstairs hall] stays on at all times.

Rule two, thermostat never goes below seventy.

And rule three, there's a swear jar over by the TV [points again] which I currently owe about five dollars to. It's a quarter per, damns don't count or I'd be broke.

Unless you're Norman. Then they count.

A swear jar? [ Tommy blinks. ] So, what's all the money used for?

[shrug] Pizza fund, mostly. It's Max's to spend.

I'm absolute shit at watching my language so that's my compromise for it.

[no comment on the actually weird rules? good. the why is a little heavy for a first meeting and he really doesn't want to have to explain it.]
