A. Jewelry store, any city
[It turns out that shopping for engagement rings is not as simple as going to the nearest jewelry store and laying down the money for an objectively nice-looking ring. After his first 'just-looking' visit, it immediately became clear that much more research is required.
'Blue' is not sufficient criteria. While his first thought is of course sapphire, he's learned there are in fact a plethora of other gems and stones with varying degrees of blue coloring. But having now decided on a specific shade, it's suddenly difficult to find anything to match it.
Practicality is the second bit of criteria. The ring shouldn't catch or get in the way of Newton's work. It's also drastically reduced the number of options he has. Perhaps he'd have to look into getting a custom cut and setting? In any case, the hue is the most important aspect. Stones can be modified, but color is absolute.
So he schedules visits with a number of jewelry stores and browses a few other local shops, a color reference on hand and peering through display cases- or possibly harranguing the jeweler about quality, cut, size, or setting details.
Price quotes don't bother him until they start to near five digits. Not that Newton's not well worth it, but he's not going to settle for anything less than absolutely perfect if he's going to pay that much for it, and so far nothing has met those standards.]
Yes, that's wonderful, but what can you tell me about fluorescence?
B. Coffee shop, cafe, bar, etc- any city
[Armed with his laptop and possibly a jewelry magazine or two, Hermann's settled in to mooch wifi and research without Newton peering over his shoulder. It's difficult enough to keep secrets with the Drift active, but perhaps that will change soon.
For now however, it's enough to have some distance, and he alternates between work and jewelry research when he starts to think Newton might be paying closer attention to their mental link.]
C. Starktech Lab- De Chima
[The biotech lab is split into halves and occupied by both an engineer and biologist. Hermann and Newton always have a handful of projects to divide their time and attention between, and given their expanding scientific network, have offered standing invitations to a number of bright minds to visit whenever they have the time to spare.
It's also really the most reliable way to get a hold of both of them at once]
