WHO: FREDERICK, KATE, NILL & TROY
WHERE: Residence #009
WHEN: UH whenever suits everyone. /breaks the laws of time and doesn't afraid
WHAT: Roommates getting to know each other... sort of.
WARNINGS: tba

[ Kate hasn't been back long, so sweat still stains her brow from a long walk under the sun and into the town to find the nearest pet store to buy a bag of dog food for Schnitzel, who's managed to cross the worlds with Nill and Kate. She returns with the necessities for the dog and her new roommate's cat. Canned for the cat anyway. She doesn't have a car to bring back litter and a whole new box for it.

She feeds Schnitzel first before walking herself back to the front to remove her shoes. After that, she wipes her brow and removes her sweater, going into the kitchen to fetch herself a tall, cold glass of water. Or beer.

She doesn't mind Troy's presence; it's Frederick Chilton's she's not appreciative of, not when in the past he's attempted to divulge information from Harvey Dent and Renee about her. ]

[Chilton soldiered home -- or "home", rather -- with growing disdain weighing every step. He had been out, recently, attaining the usual male necessities: shaving kit, personal toothbrush holder, personal soap dish, lavender French-milled soap, personal bath towel. His salaried "probational" job was beginning to take root, which meant that he had more access to a quality of life better suited to his person.

And he wasn't intent on sharing.
]

Oh.

[Having walked in, he noticed Kate in the kitchen.]

Hell, uh, hello.

[This place didn't feel like a home--but then, neither had the City when she'd first arrived. All they can do is give it time, she decides. At least she and Kate are still together, which matters more than anything. Schnitzel surviving with them only helps; their little family was still whole, even if their world was not.

She hears Kate come back from the store and makes her way downstairs slowly. She knows Troy, but she's never spoken to the other man. So when she hits the landing and sees someone standing in the hallway, she can only assume it's him. He's a doctor, she knows that much. Nill remains silent, one hand gripping the stair railing as she observes him. He's spoken to Kate, and she waits for her to answer.]

[ Troy had been in the house, too, not doing much of anything. It's been a rush of weird happenings that's gotten them here, a lot of fuss and noise, and he's actually been pretty content to take in a quiet moment now and again.

That said, he'd just hit the point of boredom when he heard activity, so he doesn't waste any time in getting up to head downstairs. He pauses on the landing for just a second, trying to quietly assess the waiting Nill. She kinda shy, though, right? And not exactly conversational, so he heads into the kitchen after smiling quickly at her.

Chilton's... Uh. Interesting? High-strung guy with the kinda attitude that stereotypically comes with the seemingly well-off and well-educated. Kate's always been friendly enough, and practical, and look! She brought cat food! He notices it quickly enough and that's how he greets the scene. ]

Aww, thanks. I'm sure Smudgeface will appreciate the gesture. [ A beat. He leans against the counter and takes a quick look around the room. ] You both go shopping?

[When Chilton first walked inwards after his auspicious greeting, only momentarily after did he caught sight of Nill. He glanced between the girl and the staircase, wondering if he could slip past without incident. But Kate Kane had likely already heard him. A shrug of his shoulders played preamble to a pained, awkward smile.]

Hi, there. You must be -- [He didn't know her name, off the top of his head.] -- Living here, too.

[Awkward. But the moment was severed by Troy's appearance; and Troy was someone that Chilton had some contact with, a sliver of foundation. The other fellow's appearance came as a sharp relief, and Chilton followed deeper into the kitchen area.]

I suppose we both did. [He glanced at Kate.] But evidently not at the same stores. [There was certainly no sign of pet food within Chilton's purchase.]

So what if one of us is allergic to animals?

[He wasn't, but he figured it a fair question.]

[A nod is the only answer she gives to Chilton before descending the rest of the stairs and moving past him to the kitchen. Her wings stay pressed close to her back, a sign of how uncomfortable she is in this place. Kanaya had been right--it wasn't time to relax, or feel relief. It was a time to play it safe and be suspicious. This all felt far too convenient, the government's offer too good. Living in the City had made Nill something of a cynic.

Water is her drink of choice for the moment. Nill offers Troy a friendly smile on her way by--she likes him well enough. He always seems happy about something, which is infectious.

She stands near Kate, leaning against the kitchen counter. Normally she wouldn't mind cooking, but she is still pretty worn out from the trauma of the City's destruction and being transported to another universe. Again. To avoid complete rudeness when answering Kate's question, she quickly signs Chinese food? Or pizza. At least now Troy and Chilton know she's said something. Probably.

Her answer to the doctor's question is a shake of her head along with a smile as she gestures to herself--she's not allergic to any animals, as far as she knows.]

[ Troy's frowns briefly at the idea that Nill said something and he doesn't know what it is. The question of whether sign language is hard to learn passes over his mind, and he tucks it somewhere to be asked about or otherwise looked up later. He shrugs to return himself to the matters at hand.

He give's Chilton's question a little snort. ]
That'd only be you, wouldn't it? Considering that we're the ones that already had pets. And you seem fine, so... I think we're good.

[ Onto the matter of food, which, now that he thinks about it, seems more pressing. He could use a bite. ] Be easy enough to order something, huh? Any universe in it's right mind delivers pizza.

[Irritated by Troy's acute logic, he frowned, pinching upwards his shoulders. Of course the younger man was right, but that left Chilton robbed of some interesting conflict so early on in the day. Some individuals thrived on arguments, and Chilton was a psychiatrist unwilling to examine his own psyche.

It was not a good mix.
]

Pizza. Swell.

[He glances between Nill and Kate, noting their communicative device. Nill, being evidently mute, wasn't a surprise variable with her knowledge of signing. Kate Kane, however...]

Vegetarian and cheese -- with pepperoni.

[Surely Hannibal would have been pleased.]

[Schnitzel licks Nill's hand when she hears her name, and the blonde offers the dog a pat on the head. Troy is right, of course. But if he doesn't admit to being allergic to animals, she supposes that there's nothing they can do about it. She wonders of Chilton really minds pets, of if he's just cranky about being in this situation. God knows most of them are. She decides to leave it for now, and maybe ask Kate later. She seems to know him a little, at least.

The addition of pepperoni doesn't really bother Nill, even if she isn't big on eating meat. The longer she's spent in the City, the more she'd discovered that her tastes angled more towards fruits and vegetables as opposed to meats. But, of course, almost everybody liked pizza. After another moment she signs: I'll look for the phonebook before heading back to the front hall closet. That's where phonebooks are kept, right?]

Awesome. We're set then.

[ There's a pause while he's waiting for the next step. It dawns on him that he doesn't know what pizza joints, chains or local, Heropa has. ] So who do we--?

[ And about then is when Nill leaves the room. He knows that she said something, signed something, but the departure feels abrupt because he's clueless as to what her parting words were. ] Oop. Where's she going?

[As the only other assumed individual with an active job, or at least one he enjoyed, Chilton rolled his eyes. He knew Troy was dissatisfied in his current discipline of mechanics (and as a reminder: Chilton wanted to inquire if Troy had any success in discovering what to do about hovercraft engineering. Perhaps such would make a good dinner discussion). He was fairly sure Nill was a student, or at least student aged. The options of shifting responsibility dwindled.]

Fine.

[He moved to set his own shopping bags outside the kitchen door. There was something unclean about mixing bathroom accessories with any proximity of a fridge.]

So is anyone going to bring it up? [He looked back at the people in the kitchen, his housemates.] How we're likely being watched, right this moment?

[He's close--they'd told her that she'd be working as a kindergarten assistant teacher. To be honest, it was along the line of work she'd been considering for the future. But it appeared as if the government of this world had decided to push those plans forward a little. At least she'd get some good experience, now.

She returns with the book just as Chilton mentions they're probably being watched. She clutches the book to her chest, knuckles quickly turning white. to be honest, Nill hadn't actually thought about that. It seemed as if the government was going to keep a close eye on them, but--in the house?

Her lips press together tightly as she moves back towards Kate to place the book on the kitchen counter.]

[ Troy opens his mouth to offer to tip. He had enough money for that, at least. Being an auto-mechanic was going to be some adjusting, but he was still being paid for what he could accomplish, which was enough for the time being. When Chilton offers first, however, he lets himself feel a little relieved about it. He'll buy everyone dinner when he's a little more secure. For sure.

... And he hadn't thought of their being watched, either, really. The idea doesn't immediately unsettle him as much as it seems to unsettled Nill, but he still looks less than enthused about the idea. He's also not sure if it's the truth, even if it seems more likely here than it does back home, where it might be Britta rambling about government conspiracies.

Anyway, he tries to brush the idea off. He shrugs and sucks on his teeth. ]
Fat lotta stuff they're finding out about us, huh? Oh, wow. We're eating pizza. So scandalous.

It isn't so much what we'd be engaging immediately.

[Chilton shot Troy a look, as if he found the disbelief insulting. The doctor was, more or less, speaking from his own experience -- as the observing party, of course. Patients of his working caliber fell into two categories: those who immediately acted up (those who had trouble adjusting) and those who were the truly dangerous psychotics. The intelligent psychopath was the real prize to contain, and good manners were less a sign of civility in Chilton's world.

Not to say that he suspected any of his current housemates of such a description (perhaps to his own disappointment). But, he was opened to the more interesting possibilities.
