HELP ME IF YOU THINK YOU CAN, I'M FEELING DOWN

WHO: All imPorts who signed up for the Local Aid Assignment HERE.
WHERE: The city of De Chima.
WHEN: September 19 - 22.
WHAT: In the wake of Crane's attack during August's Swear-In, imPorts have been sent into De Chima to receive training, assist in rebuilding, and provide aid to overworked hospitals.
WARNINGS: None anticipated; please let us know if this should be edited.

Welcome to De Chima, imPorts, and thank you for your help! There's an awful lot of work to be done and a lot to learn, so it's best to get started straightaway.

First off, imPorts will be asked to receive lessons on proper emergency preparedness and first-aid. Here, crisp, professional looking government workers - who are far quicker with a smile and a gentle, guiding hand when needed - will hold training sessions for all willing imPorts. Above all else, the workers remind all participating imPorts that staying calm is of the utmost priority in an emergency situation, the implication being that when they don't, debacles like De Chima's Swear-In occur. To remain calm is vital, they say, for if you panic and lash out, things may get even worse, and people may die.

Far more cheerful is the class on first-aid and proactive measures. ImPorts may practice proper bandaging techniques, CPR, and other such basic procedures on each other. In addition, the teachers will hold drills, asking each group what they would do and where they would go in anything ranging from mind control (they've learned from the past, it seems) to bombs to a terrorist attack, the goal being to keep as many civilians as safe as possible.

Next on the list is that imPorts will be asked to teach their fellow imPorts and willing civilians their own lessons. Once again, imPorts will both teach and learn about first-aid, carpentry skills for safe rebuilding of damaged buildings, the proper protocol in the case of mass evacuations, and will offer tips on the psychological effects on the aftermath of tragedy, emphasizing the fact that people must lean on each other to deal with trauma, guilt and grief. Remember that teachers are just heroes by another name, imPorts -- and do keep it clean, because at the back of every room, a government worker is keeping an eye on the proceedings to make sure everything's going as planned.

Last, but certainly not least is the most proactive of the assignments: give back to the community and help heal and rebuild! While the most grievous property damage to government buildings has already been dealt with, there's still an astounding amount of damage done by people fearing for their lives, from objects as small as damaged dining tables to entire walls of homes. Get plastering, hammering and rebuilding, volunteers, because you have a long couple of days ahead of you!

If carpentry isn't your strong suit, that's perfectly fine; the hospitals are still stressed and overworked from the previous events, and all of those doctors and nurses can sure use your help. Those with healing skills and an education in first-aid will be welcomed with open arms and hurried to help patients directly, but if you have no training, never fear -- there's still much left to do. From simple organizational tasks to cleaning, they sure could use an extra set of hands. Perhaps most important of these tasks is the improvement of patient morale; from reading to kids to putting on an impromptu talent show in every wing, boosting the spirits of the injured is just as important a task as healing their physical wounds!

Throughout all of this, the press will be present, but mainly unobtrusive. If any imPorts wish to make a public statement, they will be eager to get a few soundbytes, but security will be on hand at all times, and will step in with a firm hand if any imPort looks uncomfortable.

Hermann would never claim to be a carpenter, but his ability granted him some leeway in that department. It had been a difficult thing to talk himself into, still nervous about De Chima despite taking up work and residence in the city. It had been nice, those few days before the swear-in, and this would allow him some much-needed testing and practice with reconstructive manipulation.

He had enough of a handle on his ability for this at least. For the first hour or so, Hermann looked over pieces at random, his only apparent tool being a measurement device. But as it involved a lot of bending and crouching, he soon fashioned a makeshift stool and settled at a safe distance from a nice pile of mysteriously disappearing wood and tools meant for the actual carpenters.

From there he was able to summon pieces to himself, look them over from every angle with barely a glance to the measuring device, and fix them in a subtle glow of tiny, fading white numbers. Some of them took longer than others, of course- particularly the ones with a complex makeup of materials or intricate designs in need of replication- but that was almost to be expected. Each piece of furniture was as close to 'good as new' as it could get, as he'd occasionally even go so far as to remove some of the more superficial scratches.

Every so often, he'd retrieve his cane and do another round of walking. It was simple, quiet work, if not particularly grandiose, and Hermann wound up spending a short few hours at one site a day.

[A] - Learning

[In a sick way, this tragedy is an opportunity for Jacob. He's been wanting to learn more about first aid and disaster response, and here the government is helping him expand his skills for free. And, since this is an official Assignment, Jacob has the chance to earn his confiscated crime-fighting gear back from when he was arrested as a Vigilante. He's a keen and enthusiastic learner, throwing himself into the exercises.]

Anyone want to pair up for the CPR drills?

[B] - Rebuilding

[De Chima has been where Jacob lives and works for more than a year now. It's a city he has become attached to, a place of humming technology that makes him feel a little less removed from the future the Porter took him from. And the people... Jacob knows they deserve a hell of a lot better than what Scarecrow unleashed on the place.

Fortunately, Jacob is good with his hands, in excellent physical condition, and can use his biotic powers to reduce the mass of objects until they are weightless, all of which are very useful in construction and renovation. Right now he's levitating a stack of wooden beams into the air, letting it drift up to the second floor of a campus building under repair. Grateful civilian workers take the glowing blue wood into the building, and Jacob releases his hold on it and gets ready for the next load.]

I could get used to this.

02. Being Educated

Looks like Fly arrived into this world at a pretty good time! He, and a bunch of other supers, were getting some of the most important lessons they'll ever learn as super heroes: how to help others in times of crisis. Maybe some of his peers weren't so excited about this, but he sure was. When the lessons were first being offered, he remembered the comic books he read back home and how his heroes helped countless citizens from being killed on a daily basis. They never did it for the glory or the money, but for the sake of saving others who needed them. That was the kind of super hero he wanted to be.

While this particular kid was exceptionally good at keeping calm when the going got rough, he knew little to nothing about first aid, CPR, and other preparations for emergencies. Had he stayed a normal kid he might have learned just CPR but probably not until a year or two down the road. Learning all of these things now were crucial, especially after the attack on De Chima.

He was a little upset that he missed it. Maybe he could have made a difference when it was happening. But there was nothing he could do now but try to lend a hand in the aftermath. But where to start? It was all important. CPR made the most sense. After receiving aquatic abilities, he could wind up dealing with a lot of people potentially drowning. Him knowing it would be as vital as a Lifeguard knowing it.

Though he had to admit... Where could he find someone who'll teach him anything around here? He was kind of left hanging after showing up.

"Hey! Anyone here a teacher?"

02. Helping Those in Need

"Ahh! They're after me!" a voice cried from the children's ward of the hospital. If you happen to be there, you might see a fatty, orange fur seal waddling away from a pack of kids who were laughing and roaring as they chased the goofy animal. To make sure the kids didn't hurt themselves trying to catch him, Fly soon 'tripped' and 'struggled' to get back up on the slippery hospital floor. "Help! I don't know what will happen if they--"

He couldn't finish his sentence before being overwhelmed by the children. Some of the more well off kids tackled him down, some kneeled next to him to tag him, and a couple used their wheelchairs to block him off. There was no escape for this poor creature!

"Ooh noo, they got meeee!" the seal laughed, obviously being over-dramatic through his gentle struggles. "It's too late for me! I'm... Nothing but... Shark bait...!"

Whether or not he's having the kids be too loud or active is up to adult interpretation but everyone involved seems to be having a good time.

[ When the call went out, the need for handiwork was the first thing that caught Kanaya's attention. It's a skill she's built up over her life, but has rarely had proper opportunities to employ. True as it was that she also had a fair bit of medical knowledge, putting herself in a position to actually practice didn't feel right. She lost her job at the hospital for very good reasons, even if if was built on lies she told to ensure she would. Takebacks shouldn't be so easy, even when there's a need.

So, instead of serving patients, she's working on the rebuilding, be it through carpentry, masonry, plumbing, electrical, or anything else. The task she's been put to today is rebuilding a office bathroom torn apart by Billy Kaplan's recent magical mishap. Repairing pipes and relaying tile already out of the way, she has toilets to install next. Even after a week, she still stares at them a moment to make sure they won't get up and make a mess of things again.

Satisfied with their restored inanimation, placing the tank on the flange and securing the bolts. It's not terribly complicated work, but she's got plenty of it. She's certainly not one to balk at it.
