She remains turned away in order to hide her expression when he talks about what he wants. The familiar tight constriction of her chest and the lump in her throat begin to form. She quickly swallows it down and tries to keep her tone light when she responds.
"That's all anyone wants. But," she turns back to him, "it's only a big decision if you're looking for someone to spend a long time on or settle down with. Dating doesn't have to be serious, it can be fun. I mean, look at me, I've gone on..." She trails off to count off on her finds, "at least seven dates since I returned back in October and they were all fun but nothing serious."
They weren't serious because you wouldn't let them be, she reminds herself. Because she's not looking to replace Hale and doesn't want to deal with the pain of loss again.
