It would allow him to see how badly people wanted to live, and it would allow him to fight for a good goal. While Marco hadn't been as close to Jean as he had been to others (namely Armin), the words had provided insight into Jean that Jean himself lacked. They were important, and they motivated him to ultimately join the Survey Corps.
In some ways, Marco's death had helped Jean realize his own mortality, and it helped him realize that he wasn't the only one alone in the world.
