WHO: Aerith Gainsborough and Jirou Sakuma
WHERE: Nonah, Empire Ice Cream Parlor
WHEN: Late Afternoon
WHAT: Aerith senses some psychic energy coming from a giant mascot penguin?
WARNINGS: Probably none
[While most days after classes have let out Sakuma hangs back around Nonah Middle School for soccer practice with the team, there are some days when his presence is instead required at the ice cream parlor where he works in downtown Nonah.
Empire Ice Cream isn't an exceptionally large shop, but it is tended with care by its owner and Sakuma's boss, a man named Leonardo Flores. Late into middle-age but ever a gentleman, he's one of the few people native to this world whom Sakuma has grown to like and even trust a little. He's careful not to pry into the personal lives of his employees, and he will not abide by customers prying, either. As an imPort, Sakuma is especially grateful for this level of protection, particularly as his role as mascot means deliberately drawing attention to both himself and the store.
And not being harassed while wearing a giant emperor penguin mascot suit means getting to actually enjoy wearing the costume. Even if Sakuma won't openly admit this, how much he appreciates his job is obvious by his willingness to stand outside and flap flippers in the direction of the store's door, a gesture that seems to draw the most attention from children, adults finding much more appeal in the sign he sometimes holds promising deals like 2-for-1 or free toppings, and so on.
Today, of course, even the signs aren't drawing much attention, but the deeply overcast sky and threat of rain are probably to blame for that. Every now and again Sakuma peers past the beak of his uniform up at those dark grey clouds wondering if, by the time his shift is over, he'll have to make a mad dash for the Porter through a downpour. And every now and again Leonardo will gently tap the window to bring his head back down out of the clouds or alert him to the approach of a potential customer. But not this time.
And instead, his sign for the new apple pie cookie dough ice cream flavor hanging at his side, he remains oblivious to anyone's approach, caught in a cycle of hoping Kidou and Genda make it back to Heropa safely and wondering how they're both faring with the recent departure of their friends...
For Sakuma, this is the first time anyone he's known has been Ported out.]

She's in the right area today. The feeling is stronger.
Aerith wanders around, following it, even despite the threatening storm. She didn't expect it to lead her to an ice cream parlor and she especially didn't expect it to be a kid in a penguin suit. She knows she's not wrong about this, but still - wow.
So, she does the smart thing. She ignores it completely to get a better read on the penguin boy.]
What's this about apple pie cookie dough?
[Aerith focuses on him completely. He's lonely, isn't he? Sad? Someone he cared about was probably taken by the porter recently too. It had that big glitch or whatever last week. She understands. It took Komasan, too. Maybe it was that loneliness that made her follow this energy today finally.]

That's gone now, and there wasn't even a goodbye. It's not their fault and he doesn't blame them, but it does sting. Because he knows how their departure from this world will affect his teammates, in particular Kidou, who had invested a great deal in protecting Kiyama and trusting Ulvida with sensitive information. Even Amada has gone home, rendering the information network Kidou had to rely on before significantly smaller. And meaning there will be a good deal more work for both him and Genda to do in the future.
It's them he's worried about, and himself, too. They're not strangers to hardship, but without even their soccer here to relieve tension, their stresses keep accumulating. Eventually, if they don't figure out a healthier way to deal with this world's constant barrage of threats, a dam is going to burst...
Which is a thought that he silences rather abruptly when asked that sudden question. He doesn't immediately recognize Aerith's voice and so, hoisting up the sign so she can see, he turns to greet her.]
It's our new flavor of ice cream!
[He does a fair job of not making his enthusiasm seem forced, but it disappears the moment he gets a good look at who's standing before him.
...it's not everyday someone he knows happens by where he works when he's working, and to say that it's awkward to be caught in the penguin suit would be a grave understatement. Though perhaps some of that awkwardness also stems from feeling inexplicably like she's suffered a loss, too? His power is still very new to him, but there are certain emotions he has always been much more in tune with, and loneliness and sadness have a way of standing out more prominently than others.]
Hi again.
[So good at this social thing.]
