somewhere, beyond the sea [ OPEN! ]
WHO: Hange Zoë and OPEN!
WHERE: The beach near Heropa, then the aquarium! There will be separate headers for each
WHEN: Backdated a little to saturday June 14
WHAT: Hange explores the WONDERS OF THE OCEAN. Because she's never seen it before. Then to the aquarium to see seacritters up close and personal.
WARNINGS: Usual AoT cast warnings apply; possible mentions of violence, cannibalism, and perhaps SPOILERS
[ BEACH ]
[She'd seen it from afar, from pictures crying out "COME VISIT, COME RELAX, COME SPEND MONEY AT FANCY RESORTS", from the road. But standing next to the ocean, gazing out and seeing nothing but blue seas as far as the horizon… that was an altogether different experience. It was so vast, so wide, and only vanished because the curve of the earth wouldn't have it any other way.
She drops her bag (sunblock, notebooks, pens and pencils, a large camera, a net, and a book on Floridian sealife contained within) in the sand and sinks to her knees, moving only to hold the broad, floppy sunhat to her head to prevent it from flying away in the breeze. All she can do, for a full ten, fifteen minutes, is stare out at the ocean in awe, watching the waves roll in and out, birds diving for fish and boats sailing in the distance. It's a good thing that she applied sunblock before coming out here, because she'd have burned to a crisp just sitting there in the sun.
Eventually, she does make her way into the shallow water, cautiously. She kneels down and takes a handful of water, then puts it to her lips. She immediately spits it out, but lets out a yelp of happiness]
It's salty! It really is! And animals live in this?! This is amazing!
[and that was that. Her awe is not lessened, but her caution is thrown to the wind. There were things to explore, to see, to learn about!
As such, Hange will be running up and down the beach like a toddler on stimulants, doing every manner of thing, from picking up shells to hunting for invertebrates and small fish in the surf with a net. Drawing unique seaweed, floating in the sea, screaming about jellyfish, photographing shells and waves… everything that a scientifically minded person can do at a beach will be done]
------------
[ AQUARIUM ]
[At the end of the day, Hange is exhausted, dehydrated, and sunburnt. Her hair is a hot mess, barely tamed into a ponytail, and her clothes are disheveled from salt and wind.
And yet, her enthusiasm hadn't dimmed a single bit.
She takes pictures of everything, shoves little kids out of the way to read the placards, and spends a gratuitous amount of time by the shark tank and the touch pool]
Ahhh! Starfish can grow back completely as long as part of the central disc is intact… what amazing little creatures! OooOOOHhh! and they eat by everting their stomach on their prey!! Truly starfish are the most amazing creatures in all the sea!
[of course, she's said that about pretty much every animal in the aquarium thus far…]

Today he had chosen to wear shorts paired with a white button up shirt along with sandals, sunglasses perched on his nose. He didn't mind letting Hange run ahead, while she ran to go poke at things Erwin found a spot to settle down on at on the beach with his towel and book. He would only look up once in awhile to make sure Hange wasn't poking at something (or someone) she shouldn't.
Eventually he put his book aside to look up at the sun, taking a moment to let out a breath and be distracted by listening to Hange exclaim over some seaweed she had found.]
We should head back soon, maybe in a half hour or so.

Sargassum!! Such an amazing species! Just one clump of this is an entire ecosystem! Tiny crabs, fish, shrimp, copepods... hydroids! Slugs! Amazing!
[she perks up at Erwin's call, and whines like a child]
Aww. What? So soon? But I feel like I just got out here...
no subject
But he looked up when she responded, shielding his eyes against the sun.]
We've been here over 2 hours, Hange. [And he was starting to feel uncomfortably hot and he was sure he was looking rather red. He didn't care to repeat the experience of getting sunburnt again, that had been bad enough the first time.]
You can always return. There are no walls to prevent that.
no subject
More whining. There will always be whining]
Two hours isn't nearly enough time! I need to be out here from sunrise to sunset to really learn everything! Several times!
[of course, he was correct. There was nothing keeping her from returning here. Nothing that said she couldn't come here every afternoon after work]
Fiiine. Half an hour more, I need half an hour more!

Only then did he sit back, distracted enough from his book that he wasn't going to try to read again. Instead he watched as she ran across the beach for a moment before looking back at the expanse of ocean. He was becoming comfortable here, with the wide open spaces, it was making him uneasy even if they weren't behind Wall Sina.]

Hange finishes up with the seaweed (and, thankfully, sets it back adrift in the ocean) and takes to the air with blue and white wings. She's still learning how to control them, but the abundance of wind blowing off the sea makes it easy to stay aloft.
Until, of course, she spots an interesting shell on the sandbar below her, which she dives for. She at least learned to dispel her wings before hitting the water. Wet wings didn't work so well.
Thirty minutes pass and Hange has added a conch shell and a sample of sand and seawater in an empty plastic water bottle to her collection of things to bring home. Luckily for Erwin, she was quite exhausted from flying. She'd be easy to wrangle back home. Or to the aquarium. She had't forgotten that]

But he allowed himself to be distracted from that train of thought as Hange returned to ground, and surprisingly within the thirty minutes. While he knew she wanted to go the aquarium, he figured it could wait since Erwin read ready to get back.]
Shall we head back then? [He asked, taking a moment to tap some of the sand from his sandal with an expression of mild annoyance. The stuff got literally everywhere, a shower was going to be very welcomed.]
no subject
Hange has started collecting her things, placing them in her already overfull beach bag. It was going to take some packing finesse to get everything back in, plus all the items she wanted to bring back]
Mmm... yes! I have time just to head home and drop this stuff off... then I have to meet Armin at the aquarium! [she turns and smiles at Erwin] You're going, right?!

Since moving into his life in Heropa Armin's been sunburned several times over, his hair bright from the sun, his cheeks decorated with an array of post-sunburn freckles. Because of this, and a desire to cover his tattoo, he often wears hoodies of light fabrics over his shorts and T-shirts. Pale colors, light blues and greens, always with his red sneakers.
He notices Hange in the lobby and waves to her.]
Commander!

But of all the cadets, Hange had to admit; Armin was one of her very favorites. Of course Eren held the position of first and most interesting. How could he not, with his amazing ability? But Armin was something else entirely. A boy after her own heart, and intelligent beyond his years. Eren was the most interesting test subject, but Armin was the closest thing she felt she had to a protege. Well, one that she had to share with Erwin, at least.
Hange waves back, cheerful despite being quite tired]
Cadet Arlert!!
[she jogs over, her arms full of pamphlets about the aquarium and other attractions nearby]
I'm so glad you could make it! You've been here before?
no subject
Should we head in? Tickets are over there.
no subject
[she holds up a finger in a "wait" gesture, digging through her pamphlets. She pulls out two tickets] Ta-da! Already purchased them! Let's go!
no subject
Okay!
[Once inside, Armin flits under impressive display of jellies in a fancy tank shaped like an arch, immediately taking out his phone to snap pictures.]
no subject
So Hange is the fun parent, is what you're saying, Armin. She walks in and immediately gawks, open mouthed, at the jellies above and beside her]
..... Hiiiiiiiihhhhhhhhh!!!!
[she glues herself to the glass, staring wide-eyed at the mysterious, bobbing creatures. Such beauty! Such refraction of light! Such delicate strands, like beads on a string!]
Armin!! They're see through! Look, they're just like glass, living glass!! [she turns to the plaque and reads it, quickly] .... No brains?! No internal organs?! Amazing, amazing!! That such a thing is classified as an animal and not a plant...! Jellyfish, wow!! And those tentacles.... they contain tiny, no no, microscopic venomous harpoons! Can it really be so?! NATURE!!
[Are you ready for about three hours of this, Armin. Are you.]
