WHO: Hiroto Kiyama and Reina Yagami (Gran and Ulvida)
WHERE: various places, but mostly De Chima 7
WHEN: October 23rd
WHAT: It's Hiroto's birthday. The first one they're able to celebrate properly in years, in fact, and Reina isn't missing this opportunity.
WARNINGS: Spoilers for season/game 2 of Inazuma Eleven if you're unfamiliar with canon.
[Things could not get messed up today. Which is great, because Ulvida didn't think she messed up a lot of things. At least, as long as she was left on her own without anything to throw her off track (much rarer since the youngest of the kids at Sun Garden passed five years old and Desarm got focused on soccer more than on everyone else's business). Hopefully, the same goes for Reina, who hasn't had to follow a baking recipe in years, because she only had the hours Hiroto was at school to prepare. The ingredients were already bought and stored out of his sight at De Chima 2, and she brought his gift over yesterday before he got home.
As usual, she wakes up before him and is in the kitchen with breakfast cooked by the time Hiroto wakes up. There's a plate of pancakes and bacon, a small bowl of fruits, and a glass of orange juice set at his seat already, but there's also a blue paper bag sitting at his chair. It's a pretty one, clearly a gift bag of sorts, with some white tissue sticking out the top. Inside it will be a nice black coat, which she insists he at least take with him to school -- it's getting colder in the mornings of De Chima, and she knows he walks Kidou Yuuto to his Maurtia Falls where it's even chillier. She doesn't say what the gift is for, although it's clear from the wrapping that isn't just a practical gift. If he asks, she just wears that hardly noticeable smile and reminds him not to be late for school.
It won't be until after-school practice at Nonah Middle School is over that he'll get answers. This is the first time Reina has come by the campus, and she doesn't announce her presence, either. She watches the last bit of practice from a distance away, on the other side of the fence, and she's just waiting at the school's gates as Hiroto leaves campus with the rest of the boys. It's not that she minded that he accompanied Kidou on his way home to the more-dangerous city (even if she wished he would think about how that is also dangerous for him), but today...
Today, she wanted him to come straight home. She's standing there waiting, hands stuffed in the pockets of the jersey she still hasn't replaced with a coat of her own, blue eyes watching only Hiroto and ignoring any curious whispers and chatter that rises from the other boys who see her.]

And wishes himself a happy birthday. That was all he ever really expected.
Ulvida was already awake, as usual. No matter what time he seemed to set his alarm at, she seemed to have psychic powers, being able to read it and be up at least an hour before he was. It was just like her, he thinks to himself, smiling as he grabs his bag off the doorknob.
It's not until he sees the bag on the chair that gives him his first clue, looking over towards her as she hands him breakfast. He sits down, eats it quietly, only raising his voice to ask if the bag was for any particular reason. She didn't really need to celebrate anything like that with him...if anything, her being here was enough of a gift for him. But it's a question that's quickly deflected, figuring he may as well open it... And inside is a black jacket, one that made his hair stand out even more than it did already. It was rare he'd get his own clothing like this...especially a jacket. He had to use Koma's once he outgrew it, and even then, they were usually pretty baggy on him. This--it looked perfect. He tries to hide the glint in his eyes, for fear of it somehow being taken away. An age old fear that he knew he could grow out of.
But when things back home were as they were, it was a hard one to break. With a soft thank you for the jacket, he slips it on (perfect, as he'd thought) and heads to school. With practice, he ran a bit later than normal, and thankfully his training at his job was still going on so he didn't have to show up until the weekend.
That didn't mean he expected to see Ulvida there, though, eyes widening on the field as he suddenly fixates on her in return, the other players bumping into him as they ran to get ready to do drills. It's not until the captain says he'll end the practice early, letting Gran gather his things and walk over to see what she's up to.]
Ulvida. You're here?
[With Kidou and Endou popping up around here, he didn't expect to see her so close to the field just yet.]

At least Nonah is in awarmer state, so she isn't quite as chilly as she could be. She stands comfortably in front of Gran in the jersey she's still borrowing from him, nodding at his question.]
I was watching.
[A pause.]
I came to pick you up.
no subject
After practice, his eyes lock to her, the green pools all the more visible against the chill.]
I'm glad you came.
[It was a surprise--just one more to tack onto the day--but not an unwelcome one. In fact, he seems practically elated at the idea that she would go near a soccer field again.]
Did we need to stop anywhere?
no subject
It would be a lie to say she wasn't interested. In the end she had dedicated as much of herself to soccer as anyone else, and she knew about the fun soccer Endou Mamoru played too. She misses it, but mostly she misses playing it with the kids from Sun Garden.
But right now, that's less important than the boy standing in front of her. There's a brief, wistful glance to the field behind Gran, but she quickly looks back at him and shakes her head.]
No, I don't think so. I only came here to get you.
[So they could walk home together, she doesn't say.]
no subject
With Ulvida? It wasn't the same. She was nervous. Almost...tentative about playing soccer again. Sun Garden provided an atmosphere to enjoy their soccer. Something only for them....to regain the love for it they once held. There's still a love for soccer in those eyes of hers, and that's something he'll keep to himself.
Until she's ready.
He puts on his jacket, snuggling into it a moment before moving to settle onto her left side.]
Thank you. [A multiple layered statement, even for just two words. For both the coat and picking him up. For the note in his lunch. For...making it seem like for this one day he could pretend it was his birthday and not just a series of nice coincidences.]
Are you cold? We could switch, if you needed it.
[The sudden thought of /she is wearing my jacket/ slips through, and his head turns slightly to the side.]
no subject
She's glad he likes it. And she shakes her head as he offers, already taking a small step to start leading them to their new home.]
I'm not cold. And I just gave that one to you. [She looks over at him again and there's a hint of a smile on her face.] Yours alone, and yours to decide what to do with, but hog it, at least for the first day.
no subject
Ulvida's words bring a smile to his lips, reaching up to pull the collar of the jacket closer to his cheeks. He'd had his hypotheses in regards to the gift. More than willing to shrug it off as mere coincidence. But her appearance at Nonah Middle School, and her words just now--
"At least for the first day..."
It was easy to see the underlining meaning.
Once his hands adjust that collar, one moves towards his side, extending a hand out to gently hook his pinky finger around hers. A soft gesture, one he remembers from his time at Sun Garden. The gently way she'd tug him along--saying that he'd get lost if he didn't hold on tight. This time, its his wrapping around hers. Not pulling, not leading.
But holding tight.]
Thank you, Ulvida.
For everything today.
[Because that's all there could be, right?]

She knew Gran -- Hiroto -- would never leave Aliea or Sun Garden behind completely, but sometimes she couldn't help but feel that as he soars out into the world of soccer with Endou Mamoru, he shouldn't drag the weight of it behind him. That was why when he announced the recruitment, she squared her shoulders and pushed him out the door. Don't look back. Don't hold him back.
She can't help but feel like a chain as Hiroto's finger wraps around hers.
But she also can't stop herself from holding on tightly in return, heart and cheeks warming at his thanks. Their eyes meet, only briefly, before she ducks her head in a nod to acknowledge his words.]
Let's go home, Hiroto, [she says, quietly, the name still a secret between them.]
no subject
His finger loops around hers, and suddenly he's 8 years old again, smiling brightly from the swingset at the girl with hair like the ocean. Letting her know he's alright.
"I'm alright."
It wasn't a chain in his eyes. To him, it was where he belonged. And for someone who lived in the shadow of someone else, wearing someone's name in a desperate attempt to be a fraction of that person...this is where Kiyama Hiroto belonged. And the way she held on, the tight grip she had on his own finger...
It warms his own heart much more than a jacket could shield from the cold.
He nods in affirmation, moving to turn the corner that led to the Porter. De Chima was only a teleport away, but it was a walk all the way down to De Chima 07. He'd always slow down at De Chima 02, silently asking if she needed to stop by for anything, or if she preferred to stay there for the night. It was her TRUE housing, after all, and she deserved time to herself as much as the next person. He'd wait--or he'd continue on if she wished.]

She shakes her head and tugs Hiroto towards number seven. Her home, as long as he'd have her, is wherever he was. As long as he'd have her she wanted to be with him -- with someone she knew, from the Sun Garden -- as much as possible.
The house already smells like food when they walk in. She turned off the stove, of course, but she has everything set so that he wouldn't have to wait long for her to finish cooking if he asked. Everything went fine today, as far as preparing goes. As they step into the house, she turns her head in his direction.]
Do you remember? at Sun Garden, we would have one birthday party for everybody who had theirs that month.
no subject
A smile forms on his lips as he's tugged past, green eyes warming in the chilly air. The motion's nostalgic. How often he had felt the tug of her hand when they were little, pulling him to the playground, or to grab a slice of watermelon. If Reina looked back, he'd be as bright as the sun, trying to hide his laugh underneath his cold breath.
They enter De Chima 07 before long, the warm air enveloping his body and drawing him in. He's a little sleepy already from the walk, but the heat was certainly adding to it. The smells coming from the kitchen, however, catch his attention, and he suddenly focuses on her as if she were the only person in the world.]
...
[Ah, a fond memory. With so many children at Sun Garden, it was the easiest way to celebrate them all at once.]
Mmm.
I remember.

She takes their linked pinkies, pulls away briefly, and her touch returns for her entire hand to wrap gently around his. His is just small enough that she can still envelope around it, but she slips her fingers between his and continues to lead the way until they reach the kitchen. There, it's only a short break to open the refrigerator and take out the project she'd worked on today.]
Back then, [she continues from earlier,] we all celebrated together. We shared everything.
[She'd covered it so it wouldn't dry out, and now she takes off that cover as she sets the tray down on the counter space between them. Lit in the warm light of the kitchen is a small cake, decorated colorfully with sprinkles and star-shaped cookies. There is one larger cookie lying leaned up against it with an icing decoration that reads, "Happy Birthday Hiroto."]
This year, this one is for you, and only you.
no subject
He'd pulled along easily enough, letting his hand fall into hers naturally. Fingers slip through the spaces between his own, instinctively linking together like thread in a tapestry. He was hers to lead, and he follows with curious, if anticipating eyes. Was there really more to this? The coat...the birthday wish...the walk home had been enough. Kidou's and Ken's gifts were more than enough. It's almost overwhelming to think there was something else to this. That there was still more for his birthday yet to be revealed.
He freezes at the sight of it, arm still tethered to hers, yet held taut and erect completely anchored to his position. The cake itself was gorgeous, and he can only imagine what kind of care went into making that. He'd never seen anything like it--it was beautiful. The cookies were star shaped, the sprinkles perfectly scattered.
The writing on the cookie is what gets him the most. "Happy Birthday Hiroto". Just him.
No one else.
He didn't have to share this day with anyone else for once in his life.]
Reina...
[His voice hitches up ever so slightly, trying his best to keep it together as eyes bat back tears. It's a strange feeling he's felt all day, bubbling up at breakfast, simmering when Kidou had given his gift and Ken had placed the jar at his desk. But now it was overflowing, and he couldn't hold in what this mystery feeling was.
And it only took him until just now to realize it.
Kiyama Hiroto, "Gran", was happy to be alive. As Kiyama Hiroto, and no one else.]
It's beautiful.

She watches him now too, catching every shift of his expression, watching him breathe, watching the way his eyes looked over every detail of the cake she made for him. Only for him. His voice shakes when he calls her name, and Reina allows a soft smile to rise to her face at his words.
It must be overwhelming. She knew it would be, but this may have been what she intended too. As Gran and Ulvida, they locked away so much of their feelings... at least here where they were alone, she wanted somewhere Hiroto could let out everything he would swallow back elsewhere.
She says, softly but warmly, words just for him,] Happy birthday. [and she repeats it,] Happy birthday, Kiyama Hiroto.
no subject
Things were bought just for him.
He can't hold it back any longer. Tears pool at the corners of his eyes, the bottom of his palm reaching up to try and wipe them away in a futile attempt to see once more. But they don't stop, and Hiroto's breathing goes from shakey to all but choked. Tiny streams of tears make their paths down his cheeks as his face contorts into something far less graceful than he would've ever wanted Reina to see from him, but he can't help it.
He's crying. He's crying so hard from the happiness.
There's an attempt at a thank you, but his gasps for air take too much out of him to convey it properly. He can't say it despite how much he's trying, each attempt not even making it past the first syllable. No one's ever done this before for him.
Today, October 23rd, Hiroto was happy to be alive. And the sheer feeling of that was enough to overwhelm him to tears.
Hands continue to furiously scrub those tears away, but they show no sign of stopping. Kiyama Hiroto for the moment was reduced to a crying child.]

Life at Sun Garden was warm and comforting, but it never came with any overwhelming moments of joy. They knew it best from fights or from scraped knees, from scary dreams, or from the new children during their lonely first days. At Aliea, they knew it from the early days of training when their bodies hurt, the days when their father felt far away, and from when everything was finally over and they got... what, out of it? It was only weeks later that they learned how fun soccer really could be.
Really, Reina only knew about tears of happiness in storybooks. It feels a little surreal, and she feels a little removed, as Hiroto's tears start to fall and she realizes that one of those storybook scenes was happening, right in front of her.
Hiroto was crying, but not because he was sad.
She almost starts crying, too, spurred on by his tears. But she bites her lip, squares her jaw, and after a deep inhale to collect herself she steps forward. With a tug on his hand she pulls him gently against her; they fit easily together, his head by her shoulder, her arms now wrapping around him, and they stand there in an embrace that's become much more frequent nowadays as she lets him cry those happy tears.
Some tears were okay to shed. This is okay.]
I know, [she tells him. She knows what he's trying to say, just as she always did. She always knew the words he never said just as he knew hers.] I know, Hiroto.
[He doesn't need to say anything. But as she tilts her head towards his, cheek pressing against soft red hair, she murmurs the words she wants him to hear.]
Thank you for being born. Thank you, for being beside me no matter what. I always wanted to tell you that.
no subject
"I know."
Reina always seemed to know, he muses to himself. If you asked him, there was no one who knew him better than her. Not even himself.
Its validating, in a way, his green eyes cast into the fabric. That this was something normal. Something they should've gotten years ago. A birthday just for him, just for her or just for Midorikawa. That there was one special day they could celebrate just for--
That.
Reina's words are heard, although his head's still swimming from hearing them. Someone...someone he cared about far more than he cared about himself...
Was glad he was born.
Arms snap to her sides, quickly pulling her close into an embrace, securing her there. Partially to keep her from pulling away, as if the longer he held her there, the more convincing an argument that would be. The tears don't stop, and his cries are far more audible now as he sniffles, using her sweater to dry his tears.
There's no words to that.
He can't think of anything more than a thank you. Because it's the most beautiful, nicest thing anyone has ever said to him.]
I--
Thank you, Reina...Thank you for everything.
no subject
They weren't, in the end.
But to Reina, the boy in her arms right now was more than enough. She never thought very deeply about this feeling either, and during Aliea she pushed them away and tried to ignore them as much as possible. But now, with nothing to hold them back and no reason to hold them back, she closes her eyes and allows it the attention she neglected it for so long. This boy -- whether as Hiroto, Gran, or first the name he left behind -- was always more than enough to her. The boy with the beautiful ruby-red hair that she watched from a distance.
He pulls her close, and she holds him even closer, so that they can't miss the squeeze of their arms around each other.]
Let's stay together. Here, back home, no matter where we go.

Sun Garden had always been a constant for him. And although he might not have been the Hiroto that Father may have wanted to see--he was still Hiroto. And Reina, the other children of Sun Garden...Hitomiko too...
They looked at him and saw something. It's silly, how long it took him to figure that out, now that he thinks about it. Her words whisper in his ear, and they're words he's always wanted to hear.
Now...he wouldn't ever be alone.
All he can do is nod. He's beyond words now--but a soft hum escapes his lips before his head buries into that sea of blue hair.
He really, really wanted that.]
no subject
She thought she would weigh him down. Aliea, the Sun Garden, pieces of his past Hiroto would never leave behind but didn't need to chain himself to if he wanted to run to Raimon.
But maybe, but just maybe, they needed to be able to hold on to those things to keep each other grounded so they didn't float aimlessly into space.]
I'll be here.
