First Day of Class
WHO: Mr. Gold, and anyone that signed up/wishes to sign up and paid dues. Walk-ins welcome.
WHERE: The Broom Shop, Heropa
WHEN: The first Thursday of October
WHAT: 5:00 pm
WARNINGS: None as yet.
Gold's broom shop sits in an older building on a relatively busy Heropa street. It has the classic bones of that familiar, warm downtown feel that is more common in small or historic locales, much like the places around it. With limited street parking, it tends to see more foot traffic than vehicles. Because of its look and general atmosphere, it is not unusual for most of the shops here to be of crafters, small boutiques, cafes, and similar businesses. It's not quite late enough for the lights to start coming on, but a few spots in the area have flipped them on prematurely.
The shop window is dotted with Gold's handcrafted wares, including brooms of many a shape, size and color -- some compact and intricately woven, others on finely polished and carved sticks. New to the display are wreaths and baskets of various shape and function.
Inside, more items sit on display, hanging along the walls and on display at tables dotting the room. A few toward the back counter are cleared, with stools reserved for incoming students. Laid upon them are various materials for the lessons to come. One table, clothed, is reserved for refreshments, which Mr. Gold appears to be bringing down from the flat upstairs by hand despite his limp. These include neatly arranged cups of spiced tea, tomato and tapenade tartlets, potato roses, and lattice pies of pear and cranberry or blueberry and lemon zest.
Those who enter are likely to sense an immediate change in the atmosphere, after stepping in from outside. The whole place gives off an aura of warmth, despite the temperature tending to remain fairly pleasant regardless of Florida weather. It's welcoming, reassuring -- like "home," which seems to be the most appropriate word to ascribe to it.

This is a very nice set-up you have, Mr. Gold! Is there assigned seating or can I just pick a spot?

Welcome. Anywhere is fine.

Did you make all of this?
[She certainly sounds impressed!]

[ So far, so good, but this is only one customer right now. Perhaps Gold's nerves show a little in how he maintains his distance, but for all intents and purposes, the aura in this place helps him. He's pleasant. ]
That, I bought down the street.

[If there's one thing about Alison, it's that she can deliver a completely genuine compliment when necessary.]

[ It's all humbly put, quiet. Really, most all of these are the product of simple techniques he was taught as a boy. Basic things, basic application. ...Except for the potato roses, which have many failed siblings in the trash upstairs. ]
