[She smiles when she sees him, despite.... him.]

I'm from that Tarot Card captor show me and Ken watch! He's cosplaying too!

[She seems pretty charmed by the whole thing, really, standing tall or as tall as she can and trying to keep a confident attitude like the character she's dressed up as.

Yeah, I ran into that girl earlier.

[WHAT IS NICE WE JUST DON'T KNOW.]

Anyone else doing that? Or is it just you...two?

Um, like, imPorts? I dunno about that.

We did it cos a lot of the natives like to dress up like imPorts! I saw a little girl earlier dressed as Pink Princess...

[She seems very pleased.]

We just figured it'd be fun, too.

I noticed.

[He looks around, and his shoulders slump.]

Guess that wouldn't bother you, huh?

Natives acting like we're just here for their entertainment? You BET it does!

[Which might explain the salt that she got showered with earlier.]

Art is one thing, but that's going too far!

[From the dark stare he gives her, that's not a question he wants to deal with. He adjusts Kaneda's jacket a bit, hunching his shoulders.

Instead of acknowledging her point, he sticks to his argument.]

So explain the chick who said she did a better job than I did.

[Maya pauses, raising a brow, and... crosses her arms.

Lately, with all the practice she's been getting, being direct with Tetsuo has gotten a lot more reflexive.]

Y'know, you get kind of mean when you're not thinking about other people, too.

There's always gonna be selfish people, Tetsuo, but that doesn't mean everybody who does something like that is bad, or that people who are selfish sometimes are bad, or that you're bad.

Try to let yourself have fun with everyone.

I'm probably bad.

[Muttered before he continues on. That's beside the point. He knows he gets mean, sometimes he gets mean BECAUSE he's thinking about people. Lousy bastards.]

Anyway, I'll have fun when it's actually fun.

[Or he'll see everyone else's fun and bitterly watch from a corner assuming that it's not a fun he can engage in. That's how 'fun' usually works for him, even long before he got here.]

[Maya just sighs at first, and pauses-- this is the only sign she gives that what he's said is discouraging. But after a moment, she concocts a plan, and holds out her hand to beckon him.]

Come with me.

[Her hand remains open just in case, but whether he takes her hand or not, she definitely seems to be on a mission now.]

Where?

[Slowly, with no small amount of suspicion in his stare, he extends a hand to take it, but maybe he'll wait a little bit for an answer before grabbing hold of that hand with his own. It's not a no, but he's a little wary.]

[Maya turns back to him, smiling brightly, and opens her palm-- a more blatant offering of her hand.]

You wanna have fun, right? I've got some stuff to show ya.

[iamtetsuo]

[... he takes it.]

Okay, fine. Show me.

[So he can say 'I told you so'.]

[Maya's tug is gentle but firm, and she leads him through the crowds with her usual bouncy energy.]

First stop-- you hungry? Cos I have something you've gotta try! You're gonna love it.

[She grins at him over her shoulder-- and proceeds to bump into someone, giggling and giving them a sheepish apology.]

[He'd been avoiding the food around here for the most part. His shitty grasp of English writing does not help him in the slightest when it comes to identifying English food puns, and his varying distaste and distrust of what they could be takes care of the rest.

But, this is Maya. Maya's aware of what good food tastes like usually.]

Yeah, I'm hungry...

[It's mumbled, but he's following along, shooting the person holding him up briefly a withering stare just to be extra helpful.]

Good. C'mere, c'mere.

[She leads Tetsuo to an area where food stalls have been set up and heads behind it to talk to a jovial looking Japanese-Korean woman in hurried Japanese. After exchanging a few dollars, the lady thanks Maya and gives Tetsuo a smile over her shoulder before heading back into the stall.

When she returns it is with hot dogs-- one Yakisoba and one Tonkatsu-- for the two imPorts.]

Here, here, come with me and sit!

[His attitude changes slowly from reluctant belligerence into growing curiosity - hearing actual Japanese is encouraging. By now, he can almost always tell if it's comm translation or not; it's not difficult. He watches, head tilting to the side, as Maya vanishes happily...

.. and returns with something that definitely looks promising.

He joins her as indicated, eyeing the yakisoba one first, then the tonkatsu one.]

That's...

[He's not sure if he wants to admit to actually wanting food here or not. On the one hand, that means admitting something around here is edible, on the other, that looks so good.]

Amazing, is what it is. Yakisoba dog, tonkatsu dog!

[finding them a place to sit at one of the nearby con tables, Maya whips out a plastic knife and carefully cuts them both in half and trades one half from each dog.]

Aaaand now we can both try both! Come on, you first.

[Maya is watching him, watching the look on his face, smiling from ear to ear.

Waiting for the satisfaction of totally being right.]

[She's GOOD at that. Ever watchful, he couldn't discern any unevenness in the split. Before he knows it, he's got a plate with two halves of hot, fresh food, and a challenge to just try to dislike it.

Well, fine then.

Challenge fucking accepted.

He picks up the tonkatsu one, trying it. It's still a hot dog, sort of... but deep fried with panko crust, and topped with things he doesn't associate with hot dogs. True, he hasn't actually had hot dogs since the day he arrived and there was a free spread of grilled American foods. True, he had absolutely no tolerance for them then, and he's slowly been growing more used to American food since then despite his attempts to shun them.

That still doesn't change his never having had a hot dog he found anything more than tolerable before. This should have been the same, except...

Clearly, he hates this. That's why he chews what he has, swallows it, and eagerly goes for another bite.]
