[ from here! ]

[ When Kanaya hears Charlie's question, she just wheels about to face her, holding up Ashiah with both hands. The grub squirms a little, embarrassed and uncomfortable. ]

Look! They look just like her!

[foreverbouncing]

What? Woah! [Charlie turned, not entirely paying attention, and was suddenly face to face with some kind of giant...alien...bug baby? Oh my god. What was. Where was...]

[She looked at Ashiah, then down at the stuffed animal, then back up at the grub.]


Uh. It. ...sure does look like her...

[glowsferatu]

[ Ashiah waves her spindly little legs uselessly in the air, clicking away furiously as her lips draw into a frown. Finally, Kanaya puts her back against her shoulder, and she settles down with a huff. ]

They're brilliant, aren't they? You should buy one!

[ Commemorate this weird girl's daughter you don't even know, Charlie, you know you want to! ]

[foreverbouncing]

[She was sort of endearing in a weird, bug alien kind of way. Huh.]

I...uhm...

[She looked at the doll again, then back at Kanaya, so eager and excited. Ugh.]

I guess I could. I mean, I just got here so money is kind of a thing but...

[glowsferatu]

Oh! Well, let me do you a favor, then.

[ With Ashiah still in one arm, she digs in her purse for a moment until she comes up with a ten dollar bill. She's already bought five for herself, what's one more? ]

Here! That should cover it.

[foreverbouncing]

Oh dude. [Charlie blinked as she took the ten. Part of her thought she should say something about how the older girl shouldn't, but...nah. Free stuffed animal! Even if it was some kind of bug baby. So she spun around and paid the guy at the table, then back to Kanaya.]

Thanks! [And then she made the little stuffed grub do a quick dance.] This is awesome.

I think the only think that would make them more perfect is if they had some kind of squeaking apparatus built in. [ The woman working the booth laughs at that, and Kanaya offers her a wide smile in return. ] Not that I think any less of them for it! I'm sure that could be complicated to install, and raise costs.

[ Ashiah clicks in protest. She doesn't squeak at all, mom! You're embarrassing her, god. ]

[Charlie raises an eyebrow at that clicking, trying to resist the urge to laugh.]

I don't think she approves of squeakers.

Oh, she's just jealous!

[ She picks Ashiah off her shoulder, and cradle her on her back. The grub still scowls, but Kanaya manages to make her expression melt after stroking her belly for a bit. ]

Seeing herself get all this attention in effigy is just a bit surreal for her. But who know, maybe she'll grow to like it, as she grows up.

Attention does get pretty sweet sometimes.

[Charlie grins, leaning over some to smile at the grub. OKay. Maybe she was sort of cute?]

Hey there. I'm Charlie.

[Finger wave to the baby.]

[ The grub seems to consider it a moment before giving Charlie a smile. She returns the greeting with a chirp, tapping her legs against her thorax. ]

Her name's Ashiah, my little ray of hope. [ Kanaya looks up from her to Charlie, extending her free hand. ] And I'm Kanaya.

[foreverbouncing]

S'cool to meet you! [She clearly meant it, too.]

But I gotta ask...what is she?

[glowsferatu]

She's a mother grub. Well, a daughter grub, rather. But she'll grow up one day to fit that role.

[ If there will be such a role for her to fit, at least. ]

Of course, by then, she'll be as big as a house!

[foreverbouncing]

As big as a house.

[Charlie just kind of gaped at the little grub, trying to imagine it.]

[glowsferatu]

Well, a small house, maybe. [ She pinches her fingers together, just a little house. Still pretty big compared to anything else. ]

But about thirty feet from the tip of her nose to the end of her thorax. She's hardly a tenth of that now.

[foreverbouncing]

Dang. She'll be one big- [Don't say bug, Charlie.] Uh...alien?

[Good job!]

[ She pulls a face. Bug would've been better. ]

But then, she may just as easily think you're a small alien.

[foreverbouncing]

Yeah, I guess she would? [That face went right over Charlie's head, sorry Kanaya.]

We're all kinda aliens here, huh.

[glowsferatu]

[ Such a rich statement from a human. ]

Depends on the point of view. The problem with the phrase is that it's inherently subjective, an alien is simply someone who isn't like you.

And so, those aliens may be just as aliens to each other as they are to you. It's essentially useless as an umbrella term.

...Mostly back home it means people not from earth. Anymore, I mean. Like Superman or Green Lantern rings or like...

The Martian Manhunter I guess? Since, Mars.

[Hm.]

I guess it doesn't always mean that though.

No, it doesn't. Only to a human from Earth would it mean someone not from Earth. The word itself only refers to foreign individuals.

That's what I mean when I say it's inherently subjective.
