[It's good that he clarified that, because Fuu would take that literally if he hadn't (being in possession of a magic sword herself). And it makes her think of the lives she took with it... that, certainly, is something she carries with her whether she is holding the sword or not.

She doesn't let slip her ruminations on that point, though.]

Yes, the longer I'm here, the more I feel inclined to take that kind of statement as a fact rather than poetry. But it is true, all the same.

Is that what you were before becoming a television star, Mr. Joestar? A knight?

[he laughs and shakes his head, rubbing the back of his neck thoughtlessly.]

Oh no, nothing quite as interesting as that! I was a student, although I would have graduated in a few more months if I hadn't been interrupted by this unexpected vacation - I was studying to be an archaeologist.

[and while he knows that this isn't exactly the most thrilling occupation to most people (hadn't even been to most of his family at home) Jonathan can't help lighting up with pleasure all the same. there had never been any doubt in his mind over his career path.]

Oh, how exciting! Archaeology is such a fascinating subject. [it might not be thrilling to everyone, but Fuu is quite genuinely interested--she's not an archaeology buff in particular, but she does enjoy documentaries and museums.] What periods in history do you study the most?

My interests lie mostly in ancient civilizations, especially those from Mesoamerica. It's really a fascinating period - so much of it has influenced us even now, but we know relatively very little about them. It's exciting to think of how much there is to still learn!

You mean with things like Machu Pichu and the Aztecs? [forgive her blending those this was not part of her school curriculum okay] That does sound very intersting--I've always wondered what it was like to live in truly ancient times, when humans were first building civilizations and inventing the things we take for granted now.

I think what's most amazing is how little has actually changed - our technology may have advanced, and the maps may show different nations, but what drives people now is the same as when Montezuma was on the throne.

Is that so? [That piques her curiosity--people who are on different worlds have similar motivations, of course, so why not people of the past on the same world?] I did read recently that archaeologists had discovered an ancient tablet that was a customer service complaint....

About the substandard metal, yes? [he laughs] That's exactly the sort of thing I'm talking about. Our hopes and fears, the things that irritate us in daily life...much of them remain the same.

Yes, that's the one I was thinking of. [She smiles.] It's always funny to see that people of the distant past acting like we would ourselves. It makes me wonder what future archaeologists will think of us in centuries to come.

So long as they aren't despairing over being unable to translate anything, I should think it won't be too harsh a judgement. We're quite an agreeable lot.
